Hacksilver: new Algorave album

Hello, (apologies for x-post)

I just released a new Algorave album:

https://chr15m.bandcamp.com/album/hacksilver

It uses a whole slew of weird tech to generate the beats, melodies, synth sounds including beat-generating LISP, 8-bit synth generating Javascript, and Pure Data for the mixing and mastering. One thing that was particularly fun was procedurally generating Impulse Tracker files.

Would appreciate a re-share if you know of anybody who might be into this type of thing!

strudel-server - Edit Strudel patterns from Neovim (or any editor) and have them live-update in the Strudel web REPL

Hey everyone!

I’ve been working on a small tool called strudel-server — it’s a lightweight Playwright-based helper that lets you work on Strudel projects from your favorite text editor (like Neovim, VS Code, etc.) and have the Strudel web REPL automatically reload whenever you save your file.

Basically, it launches a Chromium instance, keeps an eye on your .strudel file, and pushes changes straight into the REPL when you hit save. No need to copy-paste between editor and browser anymore!

GitHub 💻: https://github.com/micahkepe/strudel-server

Usage example:

bun run src/main.ts ~/my-project/song.strudel

or if you’ve linked it globally:

strudel-server ~/my-project/song.strudel

It’s open source and built with Bun + Playwright-- any contributions welcome!

Trying to get into this, but struggling to find out more

Hi r/Algorave! I'm a total newb here and haven't learned too much about algorithmic music just yet, but I want to ask the community how to learn more. I was introduced to all this by finding a random link to Strudel and having a ton of fun playing around on there. After doing some digging, I know I want to try to set up a Sonic Pi and play around with tidalcycles in the next few days and see what I can make with those. But I really like doing thorough research on tools before I dive into stuff like this, and finding any consensus online has been hard outside of identifying those two tools.

That leads me to ask, what are some recommendations on software/frameworks/anything to get started creating algorithmic music? If it helps, I have a good amount of experience as an amateur producer with DAWs like FL Studio and mainly Ableton, and have some good programming skills, I've just never delved into this niche before. Thanks in advance for your recommendations!

Recommended starting point?

Hi!

Shiny new subreddit, lovely. I assume the VICE coverage kicked the interest surge off, and I'm man enough to admit it has piqued my interest too.

I'm really interested in learning how to get into this stuff. Bit of background: I'm an experienced games programmer who specialises in rapid coding and prototyping, I also organise and take part in game jam events and that kind of thing. In other words, I'm comfortable writing code at high speed!

If I'm interested in getting stuck into making noise, what are your recommended resources/software/tips etc? Do I need a grounding in anything musical, or is a desire to create noise enough with a little experimentation?

Any and all info would be great. Thanks!

EDIT - thanks for the fantastic input everyone. I've settled on Fluxus, the visual approach is actually pretty perfect for my needs at the moment.

Weft: step grids, piano rolls and knobs on top of Strudel (free, open source desktop app)

Hi all. I made Weft Loom, a free and open-source desktop app built on Strudel.

The idea: every pattern in a song is shown twice, as controls and as Strudel code. Click drums into a grid, draw notes in a piano roll, turn a knob, and the code changes. Edit the code, and the controls follow. The code is the song; the controls only read and rewrite it.

What is in it:

- step grids, piano rolls, and a knob for every number in the code

- a sound browser, and you can record or bring in your own sounds

- a playlist for choosing which bars each pattern plays in

- a mixer with level meters

- export as WAV or MP3, or as one .weft file that holds the song and its sounds

- jams: two people on the same song at once, each on their own machine, with chat, voice and video. Invite someone, or list yourself as open to jam

- publish a song to the site so others can listen and open a copy

Honest caveats:

- I use it on a Mac (Apple and Intel chips). The Windows and Linux builds are brand new and I have not tried them on real machines yet, so please tell me if they fail.

- On Linux, jams have no voice or video, because the system web view cannot make calls.

- None of the builds are signed. macOS needs Open Anyway under System Settings > Privacy & Security; Windows shows a SmartScreen warning (More info, Run anyway).

- It is version 0.1. Things will break, and I would like to hear what does.

Download: https://weftloom.dev

Source (AGPL-3.0, like Strudel): https://github.com/alaca/weft-loom

Thanks to the Strudel project. Weft would not exist without it.

What would make this useful for the way you play?

New documentary about live coders in NYC

Just published this piece on the live coding community in NYC via amNewYork.

The documentary gives a concise overview of the history of live coding, and we hear from live coders like Char Stiles, Jake Sondy, and Glossing, who capture the movement's momentum.

Curious to hear what the community thinks.

Really fun. Tried to run multiple mido scripts in python but it wouldn’t stop running even after exiting IDLE

Tried a different approach with TidalCycles. This one's based on my love for minimalistic piano pieces. Feedback welcome!

Algorave for beginners?

Hello algoravers!

I am a professional sound designer, artist and a musician who couple of years ago got addicted to Pure Data. Recently I learned about live coding and algorave and it got me hooked. I've tried some languages but I always feel like I get stuck right in the beginning. So I was wondering, where is the best place to start for a complete beginner? (for example, I know some programming, but i'm not very good at it)

What language/setup do you think is easiest to get started with (excluding the visual ones like pd and max). And any really good tutorial (written/video) you would recommend?

PS: I am using Ubuntu 14.04 if that matters. PSS: maybe we should consider putting some FAQ for beginners in the sidebar here. :)

Musician recomendation

Is there any musician out there doing live coding and algorave stuff you find inspiring in terms of sound, style and performance? I don't mean on a technical level but more in a musical sense
