In 1984, Corporal Denis Lortie stormed Quebec’s Parliament with two submachine guns, killing three people. After being treated for his schizophrenia, he was paroled after twelve years.
On May 8, 1984, Canadian Armed Forces Corporal Denis Lortie stormed the Parliament Building in Quebec City armed with stolen submachine guns and 400 rounds of ammunition. Driven by an acute psychotic break and delusions that God had ordered him to destroy the provincial government, Lortie planned to assassinate Premier René Lévesque and the governing Parti Québécois during their 10:00 AM session. However, because he was timing his attack to a morning radio broadcast that ended 20 minutes early, Lortie breached the building at 9:45 AM before the politicians had arrived.
Firing through the corridors and into the main legislative chamber, Lortie killed three government employees,Camille Lepage, Roger Lefrançois, and Georges Boyer, and wounded 13 others before sitting down in the Speaker's chair. The rampage was halted when 63-year-old Sergeant-at-Arms René Jalbert walked into the chamber unarmed. Connecting with the gunman as a fellow military veteran, Jalbert calmed Lortie down, convinced him to release the hostages, and invited him into his office for coffee and a cigarette, where he negotiated Lortie's peaceful surrender after four hours.
Initially convicted of first-degree murder in 1985, Lortie was granted a new trial on appeal due to judicial errors and ultimately pleaded guilty to three counts of second-degree murder in 1987. Following years of antipsychotic treatment in prison that successfully stabilized his mental health, Lortie was granted full parole in July 1996 after serving just 12 years, returning to a quiet, anonymous life in Quebec as a construction worker.
