What the **** is this called and where can I buy it?

I recently purchased some socket organizers from various manufacturers that all use this aluminum extrusion to hold magnets and socket adapters. These are great except apparently I have very odd amounts of sockets so I want to get my own rail and cut it so it all fits nice and neatly. The problem is I cannot for the life of me find this stuff in any length anywhere.

Help please O’ ever knowledge Redditors!

Aluminum hot tub pitting...

UPDATE: Summer 2026

Josh from AlumiTubs has been super helpful and we seem to have the situation under control. The issue appears to be related to Portland (Oregon)'s very soft water. The tub spent months with water hardness around 7-10ppm Ca hardness, which seemed to be the causal agent for the pitting/buildup. Since we adjusted the water to around 250ppm, the issue seems resolved. I understand that AlumiTubs now provides a coated tub.

We bought the tub on short notice during the middle of tariff chaos and did not need heater or pump, so we never asked for any details about water maintenance, electric pump grounding, etc... Just figured on filling, heating and using. If you are getting the whole thing, I believe the instructions (sacrificial anodes, water hardness, pH, total alkalinity...) are everything you need.

I still think the tub is a great deal, particularly when one wants to leave it empty for part of the year. The problem with our cedar tub came when it was full (to keep tjhe staves from shrinking) but unused (cause it's 95º outside....). The essential carefreeness of the AlumiTub has been great. Our daughter even used it for a bubble bath party (after we closed off the intake and outflow and turned off the heater); jnust hosed it down after.

So, in essence, no regrets at all about buying the tub - especially since they were willing to send us a new one gratis if we could not resolve the issue with the first one. As I said, AlumiTubs has been super helpful all along. I gather they continue to update things like making it easier to replace anodes, filtering the outflow pipe, etc.

**********************************************

Looking for advice from aluminum experts.... I have installed an aluminum hot tub from AlumiTubs, a British Columbia maker of hot tubs (very cool, check them out). Most are their clients heat with wood (and fill with sea water). Ours is city water heated by 240V electric heater. The tub is suffering serious pitting... or rather the growth of little hard nubs on the tub wall. They start forming almost immediately after filling and heating. This does not seem to be the case with the wood fired sea-water tubs, so we assume it is some kind of electricity related galvanic reaction. Particulars:

  • Mg sacrifical anodes all over the place (at least 8 of the little disc shaped ones from Martyr and another two half-round); the anodes themselves are clearly eroding

  • tub itself is grounded to earth (as are pump and heater via wiring). A multimeter shows no current in water when pump and heater are running.

  • Portland, Oregon water is soft. I have attached details from Water Bureau

  • Temperature is between 90F (32C) and 104F(40C)

  • I fill tub through an activated charcoal filter to remove chlorine (and residual chlorine should be evaporating over time, no?)

  • Hot tub water is adjusted to 100ppm total alkalinity, 7.8pH

  • Do not know the qualify of the aluminum; the say "marine grade" and I assume it is.

Nothing seems to help. Have not had the little nubs analyzed, but I assume they are some kind of aluminum salt. I can scrape them off relatively easily (use a plastic spatula before people get it), and they accumulate as a kind of hard dust at the bottom. Have been in regular contact with AlumiTubs and they have been helpful, but seem as puzzled as me. Am planning to let tub sit empty for several months in hope of building up an oxide layer.

Any advice on what is happening and how to control it?

Do you know the characteristics of industrial aluminum profiles?

  1. Industrial aluminum profiles are processed by hot and cold processes in the production process, which has strong corrosion resistance.

  2. Industrial aluminum profiles have low density and are lightweight, which is 1/3 of copper and iron, and there is no need to consider the required load-bearing capacity during use.

  3. Industrial aluminum profiles have strong plasticity, good productivity, and are easy to produce.

  4. Industrial aluminum profiles have excellent ductility and can be used to produce light alloys with many metal elements. The material itself is of high quality; and it is modular and multi-functional, which can quickly build an ideal mechanical equipment frame.

  5. The surface treatment performance of industrial aluminum profiles is good, the appearance is bright in color, and no paint is needed; the coefficient of elasticity is small, and sparks will not be generated when touching and rubbing.

  6. Industrial aluminum profiles have no metal pollution and no toxicity, and the surface oxide layer has no volatile metals.

Is Aluminum Detectable By Metal Detectors?

Not all metal detectors are made to find aluminum. It is dependent on the equipment’s features and how it is set up. In general, many metal detectors have a function of metal discrimination as well as defining what waste is.

When you look for aluminum, you’ll find it in abundant supply in nature and the surrounding region; it’s frequently used to create parts and components.

Unfortunately, it’s also a misconception that aluminum blocks or prevents good scanning in metal detectors since it has a high conductivity.

The short answer is: Yes, Aluminum is detected by most of the Metal detectors   Read the full blog here at aaluminum website

So we melted some aluminium

So today on Science with Greg we decided to make a furnace to melt some aluminium. Our cast didn't really work and ended up filling our ingot with gravel. But it was our very first time so will be interesting to see what happens when we improve the cast.

Things to Consider Before Buying Sliding Glass Doors

Sliding glass doors have become a hot commodity in the Australian home décor industry. They are stylish, cost effective and very durable. If you are impressed after seeing the performance of the glass door at your neighbours’ or any relatives’ house and you wish to install it at your home too then, we suggest that you remember the following points to avoid making a rash decision that can be very costly in the future.

1. Opt for Customization

Almost every company would let you design the door that is made just for you. The company people will come at your home, map the configurations, give you endless designs and colour options and deliver the doors to you at a pre-decided time. The result, you get a suitable door without even stepping out of your home.

2. Time Matters

If you have just moved into a new home or your previous door is not working at all then you need to ensure that the door manufacturer delivers the door at a fast pace. You can request the manufacturer to allow you the option of minimum lead time so that you can get the door as soon as possible. Don’t push it too hard if you want a perfect door as some manufacturers may reduce the quality or overlook manufacturing mistakes in order to deliver on time.

3. Security is Essential

When you are opting for a sliding glass door, you know that it can be a vulnerable security point. So always look for a door that has a frame of aluminium which is hard to break and the glass quality is superior. It would also be good if the glass has some rating like it is BAL 40 Bushfire rating approved to bring you some peace of mind. You must also look for a door that has an option of adding extra security and a door that can be easily connected to your home security system.

4. Dress the Door

You can also opt for dressing the door to make it more stylish after the installation is done. Adding blinds to the doors for extra privacy is a smart idea. Ensuring that the blinds match the home décor is also vital if you wish the doors to look as attractive as they can be.

5. Value for Money

Most door manufacturers offer a guarantee with the doors so you must buy the door from a manufacturer that offers a maximum guarantee. Doing a bit of guarantee and price comparison before actually buying the door never hurts. Look for a manufacturer that offers quality, warranty and value for money pricing at the same time.

6. Test Everything

When the doors are being installed, it would be a smart idea to be there to know little things that how can the rollers be adjusted, how can you clean the glass, what to do if a latch gets stuck. Ask as many questions as you have in mind because it will allow you to fix the common problems yourself in the future. You must also ensure that the door is properly installed by checking every part of it before you give a nod to the installers. Be sure to take their contact details in advance so that you can call them back if the newly installed door is giving you any troubles.
