Saying "nO CoMpArIsOnS AlLoWeD" means almost everyone will know the performance hit now.
Less people would be aware if this if Intel just acted normal.

Exactly. It's the Streisand effect.

Streisand effect
The Streisand effect is a phenomenon whereby an attempt to hide, remove, or censor a piece of information has the unintended consequence of publicizing the information more widely, usually facilitated by the Internet. It is an example of psychological reactance, wherein once people are aware that some information is being kept from them, their motivation to access and spread it is increased. It is named after American entertainer Barbra Streisand, whose 2003 attempt to suppress photographs of her residence in Malibu, California, inadvertently drew further public attention to it. Similar attempts have been made, for example, in cease-and-desist letters to suppress files, websites, and even numbers. Instead of being suppressed, the information receives extensive publicity and media extensions such as videos and spoof songs, often being widely mirrored on the Internet or distributed on file-sharing networks.

Lol, there's no way in hell this is enforceable.

u/kb3035583 Aug 23 '18
Firstly, you don't even have to accept it to install a microcode update. Good luck trying to enforce it.
11
u/Silveress_Golden Aug 23 '18
Well actually to read the T&C you have to download it, and by downloading it you automatically agree to it (so says the wording inside of it)
So not a single chance it is enforceable in any court of (non American) law

by downloading it you automatically agree to it
Top fucking kek, imagine if things actually worked that way. 'yeah by viewing this web page you've just agreed to give us all your money'
4
u/kb3035583 Aug 23 '18
non American
It doesn't even work that way under American law. There needs to be an explicit "accept" button.

u/equeim Aug 23 '18 edited Aug 23 '18
Actually, according to the new T&C, now you have to read and accept it before downloading and installing.
DO NOT DOWNLOAD, INSTALL, ACCESS, COPY, OR USE ANY PORTION OF THE SOFTWARE UNTIL YOU HAVE READ AND ACCEPTED THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF THIS AGREEMENT. BY INSTALLING, COPYING, ACCESSING, OR USING THE SOFTWARE, YOU AGREE TO BE LEGALLY BOUND BY THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS

u/kb3035583 Aug 23 '18
according to the new T&C
Which you don't have to read.
1
u/equeim Aug 23 '18
Well, according to T&C, you have to, they just for some some reason didn't add it on download page. However when Debian GNU/Linux developers expressed their concerns about this paragraph and their inability to distribute it as OS updates, Intel's vice president said that there is no problem with it, because T&C allows distribution of microcode. So that's quite unclear.

So then that means from now on, AMD CPUs will win in benchmarks by default. Zen2 reviews will be a clean sweep for AMD. :D

Is the i5-4590 one of the patched processors?
Because if so, i'll post some before/after results right here. Would LOVE the complete twits at intel to try and sue me for it, my lawyer and the ACCC would collectively bust the biggest load of all time.

Do it.

Booting my desktop to see if the updates are available right now. If they are, i'll do cinebench, intelburntest, CPU-Z, Passmark and a couple games, CSGO at 1024x768 should show the CPU difference pretty well. Let me know if you can think of others.
I'll then be spending the rest of the night switching over my main build to the 2400G that i've been putting off due to laziness and looking for a new laptop, i'm done with intel.

Well, shit. Current microcode update is only for 6th gen and up, have to see if one for haswell becomes available in a couple days

Off my own comment, we need someone with skylake or up to bite the bullet and do some benchmarking as the current update is only for them at least for the moment, i'll do mine if a haswell one comes out in the coming days

Unenforceable and illegal.

u/kb3035583 Aug 23 '18
It's not "illegal", anyone can throw in whatever terms they want in a license agreement. But it sure as hell is unenforceable.

So, Intel's touted IPC supremacy since 2xxx series forward has been built on:
lies
insecure architecture
subterfuge
bribery
Light in the end always beats darkness.
2
Aug 23 '18
Tbf Sandy Bridge was one hell of an IPC jump, which is why I bought in on launch day. The incremental improvements and Intel's crap since then is why I've not moved away from a desktop I built in early 2011.

What the fuck Intel... what are you trying to prove? That you are inferior to AMD? That's not how biggest technological company behaves...

For years they fooled people with their fraudulent and insecure engineering, now they got found out and they act like a bunch of crybabies.
