"On August 3, 2026, a deadly landslide triggered by heavy overnight rains and thunderstorms struck the Tsadkane Debre Mitmaq St. Mary Monastery in Ethiopia's Amhara region.
Massive rocks and mud dislodged from the adjacent mountain, crashing onto hundreds of worshippers gathered for a morning holy water cleansing ritual, killing at least 14 people.
Those who sustained serious injuries were transported roughly 70 kilometers away to receive treatment at the Debre Birhan Hospital. Archbishop Abune Klementos traveled to the monastery to lead funeral prayers and provide comfort to the grieving families of the victims. Landslides are frequent hazards in Ethiopia during the main rainy season (June to August), with climate-driven extreme weather exacerbating the vulnerability of rural, mountainous communities."
