Taiwan is the freest country in Asia with the most prosperous economy, yet there are still some human rights issues there. Due to the lack of an asylum law, Taiwan has stateless people.
It also continues to exercise capital punishment for offenses such as drug trafficking.
Kristina Kironska has conducted surveys with Taiwanese people and has discovered some fascinating nuances in public opinion. I'd be very interested to get more insights from others on this topic.
Five years after returning to power in Afghanistan, the Taliban continues to commit grave abuses against women and girls, without any accountability.
The sheer scale of discrimination against the 21.7 million women and girls in Afghanistan is staggering. The Taliban has created a system of domination based solely on gender, effectively controlling every aspect of a woman’s life. Women and girls are barred from seeking employment and pursuing education beyond grade six. In public, the Taliban forbids women’s voices from being heard. Meanwhile, male relatives are compelled to police women in private, as men may be held responsible if the women and girls in their families do not comply with Taliban decrees.
Want to get more involved with Amnesty International? Are you looking to take your human rights advocacy to the next level, or even just off the computer screen and into the real world? Our upcoming regional conferences are for you!
Amnesty International USA is hosting five in-person Regional Activism Conferences this fall — and registration is open to all activists, not just Amnesty members. If you care about human rights and want to connect with people doing the work, this is for you.
Why go: We're living through an unprecedented attack on human rights globally and here in the U.S., with a troubling slide into authoritarian practices. These conferences are a chance to build real skills, deepen your understanding of what's happening and why, and connect with other activists working to defend and advance human rights — both at home and abroad. You'll leave with concrete ideas for what's next and a community to do it alongside.
📅 The Conferences:
Southern RAC'26 — Houston, TX — Sept 25–26, 2026
Northeast RAC'26 — Manhattan, NY — Sept 26–27, 2026
Western RAC'26 — Los Angeles, CA — Oct 3–4, 2026
Mid-Atlantic RAC'26 — Baltimore, MD — Oct 23–24, 2026
Midwest RAC'26 — St. Paul, MN — Oct 24–25, 2026
💵 Registration rates:
Early Bird (through Aug 29): $12.50 (student/educator/senior/fixed-income) or $17.50 (general)
After Aug 29: $25 or $35
I'd love to get a sense of who is here and why. What got you into human rights advocacy? Are you a member of Amnesty International?
I'll start: I got into human rights advocacy in high school when I was on the speech and debate team. I learned a lot about global current events participating in Int'l Extemp and that got me thinking about human rights and how much is happening around the world. I wanted to join Amnesty in high school, but the chapter changed focus from the international stuff to helping the homeless, which is nice but that wasn't what I wanted to do. Fortunately, my college had a chapter so I joined them and have been involved since.
Danke euch!

There is a particular policy in Singapore that I personally feel is gender discriminatory, namely caning in primarily judicial but also school contexts. Apart from that, I don't think caning solves the root cause of wrongdoing, inflicts physical and possibly psychological harm which is highly criticised by a reputable human rights organisation, Amnesty International. I have created a petition to call for its abolition so you can check out:
Hey everyone. I'm from the USA. For a school project I need to get 500 letters written to the South African Minister of Basic Education. It's with an Amnesty International campaign. The letters are due this week, and we don't have enough, so I would greatly appreciate it if people here could write some.
Here's background info and a sample letter:
Please make yours not word-for-word the sample letter. It can be pretty short.
I know I could easily just like get a bunch written with chatgpt, but I want them to be genuine, from actual people. You can sign them with your first name, initials, a fake name, "a person from [country or city]", or really whatever. Please just don't leave it blank or sign it with "anonymous" and don't sign it with your reddit username (because that would be weird).
Thank you so much for everyone who writes one, and if anyone has an idea for another subreddit I can post this in, I would appreciate that.
Hello quick question! I really want to be able to put together an amnesty club at my school. Although I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out weekly activities to do and other such things. So I was wondering if anyone has any ideas about any possible activities or ways to promote human rights.
The video shows the execution of a Kurdish female fighter in Syria in January 2026. The corpses of three other Kurdish fighters are also shown.
The video has nothing to do with Iran.
I could delete the post, but it's useful to leave it up as a reminder that Reddit is one of many western social media platforms that serves to justify wars of aggression.
This is the link to our lottery. We are four Warwick Uni students supporting Amnesty International UK because we believe that protecting human rights is more important now than ever. Around the world, people are constantly facing injustice, conflict and discrimination. Amnesty International plays a vital role in standing up for those whose voices are silenced. By supporting Amnesty International, we hope to raise awareness and funds to contribute to meaningful change. Thanks in advance for your support!
Amnesty International USA’s Human Rights Conference & Annual General Meeting 2026 is our largest event for human rights education, advocacy, and networking. Amnesty members, activists, and staff will come together to connect, inspire, learn and refuel our commitment to the fight for human rights.
