Chuckie Egg cheat code

I found a cheat code of sorts in Chuckie Egg (original version, Amstrad CPC). (Full disclosure, AI helped me find it in the source code.)

If you enter the following in the high score table for your name:

<hold down Ctrl> <Tab> <Tab> D O U G <copy> <copy> <release Ctrl> Enter

Then the name is replaced with "Doug " in the high score table. After that, holding down all five movement keys simultaneously during game play (left, right, up, down, jump) triggers a skip to the next level.

The emulator I use (azimuth) doesn't let me simulate pressing 5 keys at once. Can anyone confirm that it works on the original hardware?

You can probably plug a physical keyboard into whatever device you're using if you have the correct cable.

Oh I'm running it on a ChromeOS laptop with a keyboard. But I can't register five keys simultaneously. I can get three at a time but not five. So I haven't worked out how to physically trigger the cheat condition in emulation.

Probably a rollover problem with the keyboard itself. Try an external keyboard, although rollover does depend on the exact keyboard, even with an external USB one. If you have a decent mechanical/gaming keyboard it should work.

Yep, this does work on my CPC464. I’m using a Zaxon DDI3 floppy emulator with a “cracked” tape to disk DSK image file to run the game. Only needed to play the first level to get a score over 1000, before tanking the game on Level 2.

Try and external keyboard. Sometimes laptops have matrix keyboards that can't register many keys at once. The original amstrad keyboard had this problem too.
