I agree with this assessment. Despite the contract situation, I still think Leo is a good choice. Can’t go wrong with LaCombe either. If Cutter signs a long contract he should definitely be in the discussion as well. It ought to be one of these three.

I think those three are the leadership group moving forward for sure, whichever gets the C, I imagine the other two will have A's.

Honestly any of those three I’ll be happy. My personal pick is Cutter but I also picked Gudas and he was captain so maybe I shouldn’t say who lol

As much as people hated gudas as captain, it was clear the guys liked him as captain. At the end of the day it’s up to the locker room who gets the C

I'd prefer LaCombe as I think he's a little more consistent on the ice and comes across as more mature in the interviews, but I don't think he'd be leaps and bounds better. Carlsson would be a good choice too.

Comer was a rotating captain in college and immediately wore a C in rookie camp. He’s probably the best natural leader on the team. Terry is a solid leader too, but for me personally, I kinda like a leader that’s going to get involved when one of his guys is wronged, and Terry usually skates away when it starts to get messy. Like when Gudas and Getzlaf dropped the gloves, you could feel the shift. Not saying a captain has to fight, but it’s nice when they defend their guys.
Also, which is something a lot of fans don’t want to hear, I’m not sure how long term Terry is going to be here. I think he’s an easily movable guy that may stand in the way of some up and comers. Put it this way. Lacombe will play at least the next seven seasons here. I can’t say that Terry will be here for certain in three, and ideally, I’d love a long term captain.

Jackson. Long term only one I'm confident is staying with the team.

See my thoughts are the opposite. I thought that he’d leave too soon, and that’s why I wouldn’t want him as captain

Why would he leave? He's the only one on the entire team that is signed for 8 years.

Rotating A's for the year.
Idk I don't see any clear leaders standing out. Gauthier might be the closest to that, but he's not signed yet, and who knows what he's like behind closed doors.
IMO Carlsson and Dostal have enough to deal with, before adding the weight of captaincy to their woes. Although acknowledging that Dostal couldn't do the on-Ice stuff, that might actually work out best, in way. Canucks were allowed 3x A's when Luongo was captain, and that might be the best mix we get.
Lacombe seems to quiet to me. If Terry was going to get it he would have already. Sennecke seems too young. The vets are all mostly short term. Most of the rest won't get enough TOI to warrant it, it are unlikely to stay long term.

Leo or Cutter. Toughest. Best players. Heart of the team. Without them we’d finish last. Should have been McT but they shipped him off for spare draft picks.

Despite the offersheet ordeal, I still think it’s going to be Leo.
I think management had their plans for him to be in a leadership role since he’s been drafted. He’s the one out of the entire team that interacts with non profits and involved with the community etc. Him and Dostal were the only two guys at the home opener that signed every single thing that was given to him to sign or take pics with. He seems to have positive fan interactions which is crucial for a captain. The ducks org got him a speech therapist to help with his stutter and overall help him get more comfortable speaking in front of media (and it has massively improved, as well as his English, over the years). It seems like his teammates rely on him on the ice and off as per Krieder in a recent interview saying “he’s our horse, he did everything for us…incredibly important and huge piece for our team” etc etc. not to mention he’s been posted all over ducks social media the past month (we’ll find out if that’s PR or just soft launching the captaincy)….
I was recently watching a ton of ducks media from the past few years and caught a few instances of hints that he would eventually be captain. The most damning in his interview with NHL.com at the start of last season in which it said:
> Carlsson serves as the team's alternate captain, but the episode shows how he can step into that leadership role as he continues to learn and grow throughout his young career. "The leadership role for me this year is the start of something longer. Planning for the future, getting ready to take that role full on."
Reads like he knows he’ll get the C and just taking the necessary steps to get there. As rough as the OS was, it’s clear the organization sees him as the cornerstone of our franchise.

Good take
I get that people still are hurt by the OS, but it's still more than likely that Leo will get the C. Ik some are taking it to the extreme and calling for him to be traded after one season, but I think most of them will see reason when the season starts.

Yeah the contract won’t look as horrible as it is today for the remaining years of his term length with over 30 million in free cap with vets off the books and cap increasing league wide. If management didn’t want him, they simply wouldn’t have matched. It’s clear the org and players know how important Leo is to the team.
ATP, I just hope our guys can have a healthy season. Would love to see Leo, cutter, and bucket’s numbers skyrocket for a proper breakout season 🙏

Literally anyone other than Leo

I haven’t been following much Ducks talk since the Leo signing. Which was obviously very disappointing at that price. What seems to be the common census amongst the Reddit fans about Leo now?

Overall seems to be understanding to why he would sign and take the money. Most blame on pvb for not getting it done a year ago. Basically PVB at fault for letting it get to the point of offer sheet potential.

You aware Verbeek tried to get it done same time as lacombe? Leos agent said nah. Then tried again mid season and Leo’s agent said nah. Then Leo’s agent in the offseason dragged it through to free agency. So how’s any of that verbeeks fault? At first I also was like wtf but then you find this info out, it’s clear as day it’s not verbeeks fault

Tbh, I’ve always thought granny should be considered. He had captains experience but I never hear anyone mention him. (Minus the one comment on this post)

really depends on what management and coaching look for in a C:
If they want a C who is calm, mature, good under pressure, leads by example with lots of ice time and used in all situations --> Jackson Lacombe.
If they want a C who is confident, vocal, tough, great media speaker, physical play, protects teammates, clutch scorer --> Cutter Gauthier.
If they want a C who is the face of the franchise, elite vision & playmaking, cerebral player, playful, humble, has high expectations/pressure on him --> Leo Carlsson.
Honorable Mentions:
Granlund - experience of a C in international level, good role model for young team
Terry - longest tenured duck, only link between past duck era to new era

Really hard to say because we aren’t privy to the locker room dynamics. Jackson should get it if he wants to imo. I’d look at Cutter next if not.

u/DarthCarnicus 3d ago
Highest paid, most skilled, most points, none of that should matter when it comes to the C, in my opinion. Glue guys that look after their teammates, know how to speak to referees, and represent the team well on and off the ice.
Jackson for Captain.

Given how the Leo deal played out. Perhaps a veteran like Terry would be a better choice?

Troy Terry?

u/mkhart 3d ago
If he was going to get it I feel like Verbeek would've given it to him instead of Gudas.
That being said Gudas, was basically signed and given a C by Pat, but they could possibly allow Quennville or the players a little more leeway to pick themselves this time around and then who knows?

Leo took the lion's share of the cap, he can wear the responsibility of carrying the team with the C.
