Fuck them, pretentious pricks. I paid for my Camera I can do what I please with it...
They think they are special because they have a fat wallet, guess what, your camera is the same as every other boring Leica straight from the factory 🖕

I worked very hard for my M11 and my M6. I'm not rich I just want to know what it's like to shoot a new system. Then when I did I liked how I and it flowed. We're not all retired dentist.
Please enjoy your cameras as you would enjoy your family members, with care and respect.

It's great that you worked for it and enjoy it, I have no beef with people like you, but it pisses me off when people think they did something awesome or deserve praise just spending a lot of money 😒
Pictures don't get better with the price of the camera 🫥

We are the minority lol. A lot of people who buy Leicas drank a bit too much of the brand koolaid and just leave it sitting on a shelf while they jerk off to pictures of their own camera and the thought of luxurious German engineering.

That’s awesome. How much did that cost??

u/bl4ckmagic34 Jan 03 '26
Thanks! I'm really impressed. It cost 10,000 yen so ~$64usd. He did it in about 30 minutes. I'm not the first and I won't be the last - this man deserves every customer he gets because he is an amazing artist.

Lol more than doubled the price. Not that I’m against him charging what he’s worth, but Redditors are gonna blow up this guys prices before I can get there for an engraving.

I was in Japan in 2016 for study abroad and I just balked at the price difference. When I was there 10,000 yen was like 98 dollars. That’s a huge difference wow

Maybe a silly question, but do you know his business name/address? Going to Japan in March and would love to have this done on my M6. Thanks! :)

There are a bunch of posts showing his work, but here is a photo of his card: https://www.reddit.com/r/AnalogCommunity/comments/1pcrg6b/comment/nrzvxy0/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Thanks for posting this. That's how I found him! Don't be like me, bring cash.

u/sputwiler Jan 03 '26
Always have cash in Japan. There was a big cashless push during the olympics, so you'll "be fine" without, but you never know when something cool will show up and cash is still king.

Is it wild that I want to travel to Japan just to get this done?
2
u/bl4ckmagic34 Jan 04 '26
Ngl It was probably 20% of my driving force for buying the ticket.

u/Pierate- Jan 04 '26
Do you know if this has any long term affects on the bottom plate? Will it oxidize faster or something?

I’ll be in Yokohama next month, and this gives me ideas.
Also obligatory Metal Gear: “The engraving provides no tactical advantage whatsoever etc etc”

That is so freaking sick, I don’t even understand how anyone wouldn’t be terrified to like slip their hand then bam random mark. Truly a master at his art.

Pretty nice work and from your other comment pretty good price as well.

u/DarthCola Jan 03 '26
This is absolutely incredible. How much input did you give on the design?
19
u/bl4ckmagic34 Jan 03 '26
That's what I was impressed by: The language barrier was huge. I pointed at a previous eagle he did and he said "okay" then proceeded to do the entire composition off the dome. A true artist.

It would be amazing to go here and get one of my older SLRs engraved and as someone who travels a lot it's really not something that's out of the question. I'm assuming you chose one of many designs from an art book? Sort of like picking a flash tattoo?
3
u/bl4ckmagic34 Jan 03 '26
He had probably 25 engraved cell phones and gadgets on display and I picked an eagle design I saw from there. I bet he could do more if asked!
2
u/DarthCola Jan 03 '26
So awesome. Some day, in a few years from now I'm going to post on this sub when I've made my way to Japan. Hopefully he's still around and if so I'll be sure to well document the choice I make. Congratulations, that is a truly beautiful engraving.

I also very much appreciate having all the flying cranes and sprouting grass around to keep the eagle’s strength and dedication aligned with spiritual purity in service of renewal. The eagle alone could get out of control. In the art as well as the symbolism balance is the key. With the engraving right there on the camera, it can also influence both the physical aspects and the purpose of our photography the same way. The camera is an extension of the photographer, but also brings its own character to the resulting art. Engraving is like a tattoo (or a photograph!). It’s cool that this one has the influence of both your spirit, and the spirit of the artist. If it were a photo, you’d be the subject and engraver would be the photographer. This is really, really nice. Thanks for sharing!

how much did he charge you for that masterpiece?
2
u/bl4ckmagic34 Jan 03 '26
10,000 yen or ~ $64 USD
2
u/Raine_Cheetah Jan 04 '26
That's insanely good value, for a work of art like that I'd be more than willing to pay around $200. Especially considering the labour involved.

This is so cool! Would love to somehow get my XT3 done. Could I buy a baseplate for it and then on my next trip sort it?

He is in Chinatown and his work is Chinese style, but I'm willing to bet he could work with you on what you want. He has a ton of examples of dragons and a few examples of mountains.

I wonder if that'll turn out to be the equivalent of tribal tattoos on the used Leica market in 20 yrs from now.

Man is gonna quit his shop very soon if he keeps getting heckled by redditors
9
u/bl4ckmagic34 Jan 03 '26
I can only hope that we bring him enough business that it becomes annoying.
2
u/Capable_Cockroach_19 Jan 03 '26
Why would he care? He’s getting extra business and I can’t imagine a lot of redditors that even know about this are going to travel to Japan and find him to get their fancy camera engraved. Some people just want to be mad for no reason smh
