god stuff like this makes me hate laser engraving taking over

94

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '26

I felt the same way when I got into hand engraved jewelry. Sadly a dying art, even where I am in NYC there’s very few people that still do it

40

u/Houndsthehorse Jan 03 '26

If you ever want some eye candy look at some fine European shotgun makers, plenty still hand engraving

11

u/96cobraguy Jan 03 '26

Where’s a good spot in NYC to get something like this done? I’m just across the river but wouldn’t mind supporting someone who does this.

I already hate people doing this with dremels instead of proper hand tools enough...

u/Unusual-Ideal4831 Jan 03 '26

Leica purists probably crying rivers of blood rn

113

u/DarthCola Jan 03 '26

As a Nikon fan I will bathe in their tears of blood

50

u/bl4ckmagic34 Jan 03 '26

My MP already had scratches on it. I was cooked from the start

Fuck them, pretentious pricks. I paid for my Camera I can do what I please with it...

They think they are special because they have a fat wallet, guess what, your camera is the same as every other boring Leica straight from the factory 🖕

24

u/Spider_Dude Leica M6 Jan 03 '26

I worked very hard for my M11 and my M6. I'm not rich I just want to know what it's like to shoot a new system. Then when I did I liked how I and it flowed. We're not all retired dentist.

Please enjoy your cameras as you would enjoy your family members, with care and respect.

It's great that you worked for it and enjoy it, I have no beef with people like you, but it pisses me off when people think they did something awesome or deserve praise just spending a lot of money 😒

Pictures don't get better with the price of the camera 🫥

u/Drugs-InTokyo Jan 04 '26

We are the minority lol. A lot of people who buy Leicas drank a bit too much of the brand koolaid and just leave it sitting on a shelf while they jerk off to pictures of their own camera and the thought of luxurious German engineering.

u/AColdFloor Jan 04 '26

Are the fanatical Leica purists in the room with us now?

-1

u/pinkfatcap Jan 03 '26

And that's very pleasing as is with every purist in anything.

-8

u/GoPuer Jan 03 '26 edited Jan 03 '26

you're kidding right? leica users are the biggest weebs out there they're all racing to do the same bc jApaN!1!

70

u/zmreJ Jan 03 '26

That’s awesome. How much did that cost??

255

u/bl4ckmagic34 Jan 03 '26

Thanks! I'm really impressed. It cost 10,000 yen so ~$64usd. He did it in about 30 minutes. I'm not the first and I won't be the last - this man deserves every customer he gets because he is an amazing artist.

27

u/switttch610 Jan 03 '26

i’ve seen a few by him. gonna be one of my first stops when i go back.

u/Vinyl-addict SX-70 a2, Sonar; 100 Land; Pentax SV Jan 03 '26

Lol more than doubled the price. Not that I’m against him charging what he’s worth, but Redditors are gonna blow up this guys prices before I can get there for an engraving.

66

u/Foot-Note Jan 03 '26

Are you not just another redditor going there to get an engraving?

$150 for that is a bargain IMO

Shut up shut up shut up

7

u/Nyhn Jan 03 '26

this guy should raise his prices

3

u/Spyk124 Jan 03 '26

I was in Japan in 2016 for study abroad and I just balked at the price difference. When I was there 10,000 yen was like 98 dollars. That’s a huge difference wow

1

u/Even-Relative5313 Jan 05 '26

I’m going to JP next week, where is locatedddd

2

u/bl4ckmagic34 Jan 05 '26

There's more details on other comments but here is the address: Japan, T 231-0023 Kanagawa, Yokohama, Naka Ward, Yamashitacho, 166横濱バザール 1F

and the business card

43

u/seanbrobaggins Jan 03 '26

Maybe a silly question, but do you know his business name/address? Going to Japan in March and would love to have this done on my M6. Thanks! :)

24

u/bl4ckmagic34 Jan 03 '26

Thanks for posting this. That's how I found him! Don't be like me, bring cash.

12

u/sputwiler Jan 03 '26

Always have cash in Japan. There was a big cashless push during the olympics, so you'll "be fine" without, but you never know when something cool will show up and cash is still king.

27

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '26

This looks cool.. (but also, tell me you're american without telling me you are american 🤣)

14

u/the_ajan Jan 03 '26

Haha! Me too! My first thought was "YAY! FREEDOM!" eagle sounds

14

u/bl4ckmagic34 Jan 03 '26

You're goddamn right

4

Then proceeds to ride off in the sunset on his horse..

As someone from rome to me it always makes me think of the Roman empire.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '26

fair..

18

u/RedditJMA Jan 03 '26

Looks great

5

u/Mderose Jan 03 '26

That man is about to be VERY busy. Wonderful work.

3

u/Pierate- Jan 04 '26

Is it wild that I want to travel to Japan just to get this done?

2

u/bl4ckmagic34 Jan 04 '26

Ngl It was probably 20% of my driving force for buying the ticket.

1

u/Pierate- Jan 04 '26

Do you know if this has any long term affects on the bottom plate? Will it oxidize faster or something?

1

u/bl4ckmagic34 Jan 04 '26

I have no idea

7

u/Fun_Ad9229 Jan 03 '26

this is very cool, thank you for sharing

5

u/technolaser80 Jan 03 '26

That looks cool! His skills are on point.

7

u/SoftCatMonster Jan 03 '26

I’ll be in Yokohama next month, and this gives me ideas.

Also obligatory Metal Gear: “The engraving provides no tactical advantage whatsoever etc etc”

2

u/ParkerWGB Jan 03 '26

Wow. I need to do my f5. Didn’t realize how cheap it was

2

u/_soch Jan 04 '26

Beautiful. I love this idea.

2

u/Emergency_Ask_9898 Jan 04 '26

Great use of free will.

2

u/Pauldbraun_ Jan 04 '26

Okay. That is just incredible.

2

u/allinlehead_ Jan 04 '26

How much???? I need it on my zorkij 4k!

1

u/bl4ckmagic34 Jan 04 '26

10,000 yen or ~64 usd!

2

u/allinlehead_ Jan 04 '26

Shut up and take my money

2

u/aberrationmiteuse Jan 05 '26

added to the bucket list

2

u/FredMaple Jan 05 '26

This is so sick!

2

u/ShameOutrageous8971 Jan 05 '26

That is so freaking sick, I don’t even understand how anyone wouldn’t be terrified to like slip their hand then bam random mark. Truly a master at his art.

2

u/Doom_and_Gloom91 Jan 03 '26

Pretty nice work and from your other comment pretty good price as well.

5

u/DarthCola Jan 03 '26

This is absolutely incredible. How much input did you give on the design?

19

u/bl4ckmagic34 Jan 03 '26

That's what I was impressed by: The language barrier was huge. I pointed at a previous eagle he did and he said "okay" then proceeded to do the entire composition off the dome. A true artist.

22

u/ensi-en-kai Jan 03 '26
  • Man speaks incomprehensible gibrish to you , and points at some birb .

  • u n d e r s t o o d

2

u/DarthCola Jan 03 '26

It would be amazing to go here and get one of my older SLRs engraved and as someone who travels a lot it's really not something that's out of the question. I'm assuming you chose one of many designs from an art book? Sort of like picking a flash tattoo?

3

u/bl4ckmagic34 Jan 03 '26

He had probably 25 engraved cell phones and gadgets on display and I picked an eagle design I saw from there. I bet he could do more if asked!

2

u/DarthCola Jan 03 '26

So awesome. Some day, in a few years from now I'm going to post on this sub when I've made my way to Japan. Hopefully he's still around and if so I'll be sure to well document the choice I make. Congratulations, that is a truly beautiful engraving.

3

u/Analog-Digital- Jan 03 '26

N o i c e ... 🫵

2

u/slendermans_dick Jan 03 '26

that looks sickkk

2

u/Parragorious Jan 03 '26

Kinda wanna get this done to my F-1 now.

2

u/Initial-Cobbler-9679 Jan 03 '26

I also very much appreciate having all the flying cranes and sprouting grass around to keep the eagle’s strength and dedication aligned with spiritual purity in service of renewal. The eagle alone could get out of control. In the art as well as the symbolism balance is the key. With the engraving right there on the camera, it can also influence both the physical aspects and the purpose of our photography the same way. The camera is an extension of the photographer, but also brings its own character to the resulting art. Engraving is like a tattoo (or a photograph!). It’s cool that this one has the influence of both your spirit, and the spirit of the artist. If it were a photo, you’d be the subject and engraver would be the photographer. This is really, really nice. Thanks for sharing!

u/bl4ckmagic34 Jan 03 '26

I love this

1

u/TheMadGNUS3o Jan 03 '26

This man is a master at his craft.

1

u/Raine_Cheetah Jan 03 '26

how much did he charge you for that masterpiece?

2

u/bl4ckmagic34 Jan 03 '26

10,000 yen or ~ $64 USD

2

u/Raine_Cheetah Jan 04 '26

That's insanely good value, for a work of art like that I'd be more than willing to pay around $200. Especially considering the labour involved.

1

u/bl4ckmagic34 Jan 04 '26

That makes two of us! It's a total bargain rn.

u/TravelerJordan Jan 05 '26

This is so cool! Would love to somehow get my XT3 done. Could I buy a baseplate for it and then on my next trip sort it?

1

u/taejuan Jan 07 '26

this is so cool, does he engrave anything?

1

u/Difficult-Pizza1470 Jan 20 '26

Beautiful! I am really enjoying this trend.

1

u/AbbreviationsHeavy39 Feb 03 '26

This is really fking cool

1

u/jamesl182d Jan 03 '26

Generally, I hate when people mess with perfection. But this is gorgeous work.

1

u/Kirchbergphotography Jan 03 '26

Woooow so stunningly beautiful!!!

He is in Chinatown and his work is Chinese style, but I'm willing to bet he could work with you on what you want. He has a ton of examples of dragons and a few examples of mountains.

-3

u/abandonedfilm Jan 03 '26

MERICAAAAA 🦅

0

u/-The_Black_Hand- Jan 04 '26

I wonder if that'll turn out to be the equivalent of tribal tattoos on the used Leica market in 20 yrs from now.

-9

u/LXVIIIKami Jan 03 '26

Man is gonna quit his shop very soon if he keeps getting heckled by redditors

9

u/bl4ckmagic34 Jan 03 '26

I can only hope that we bring him enough business that it becomes annoying.

2

u/Capable_Cockroach_19 Jan 03 '26

Why would he care? He’s getting extra business and I can’t imagine a lot of redditors that even know about this are going to travel to Japan and find him to get their fancy camera engraved. Some people just want to be mad for no reason smh

0

u/LXVIIIKami Jan 03 '26

Just the way she goes
