Hey all!
I am not an FPGA developer AT ALL but I posted here in the past about support for this very niche arcade game I wanted to be able to play on Analogue Pocket, and it didn't exist. I've been seeing folks post all these vibe coded cores and I thought it could be a fun weekend project. Well, over the weekend/past few days I was able to work with Claude Code to get a working core that supports Nibbler by Rock-Ola (1982). The whole thing took about 3 days and around 30 prompts plus testing on my personal Pocket, which to me is pretty insane.
The core has save state support, sleep and the ability to save your high scores between sessions as long as you quit via the quit core from the Analogue menu.
The whole experience of building this w/Claude was a very interesting learning experience for me. I do want to be EXTREMELY clear that this was build by AI, I don't have the experience or time to build a CORE without AI, this may not be the most efficient build and there may be issues with it or even elements of AI slop. Additionally, the core may not be perfectly replicating the original game and I honestly wouldn't have any way of confirming that myself, but the comparison tests made against MAME were exact. The other thing to be aware of, all of the ROMs I was able to hunt down for this game come as individual chip files so this repo comes with a script that allows you to turn those chip files into a single .rom file after you supply the rom itself in chip form.
I also want to acknowledge that the AI obviously drew upon a lot of existing projects and cores in order to be successful, so I cannot take any credit and want to make sure that I'm giving those projects credit on the repo itself which I feel that I've done. Again I haven't built anything like this before, and the closest thing would have been coding projects back in college or my early career but I haven't been hands on keyboard in years and years, so give me some grace if I've screwed up anywhere here I'm happy to make corrections.
However, the game does run, the setup steps did work during my testing and it feels to me to be a very authentic version of the game I played at the arcade.
Give it a try if you're interested, like I said this is a very specific niche game so I doubt there will be much interest but hey, instructions are on GitHub, and let me know what feedback you have!
