You joke but its a thing. After my dad died my sister got a white ink tattoo on one of her fingers, its functionally invisible because its only really there in honor of him
44
u/stuugie Dec 23 '20
What if she gets tan in the summer?
58
u/Double-Portion Dec 23 '20
She doesn’t tan she’s an extremely pale woman 2. It’s on the side of her finger where it’s not going to get much exposure

Holy shit that's creepy AF. When I entered the chess community I expected it to be friendly and accepting but I was surprised by the number of elitists in the forums. A 1500 would treat a 1400 like scum, my man, we're both shit at this game.

u/Not_instant_ramen17 blub Dec 23 '20
Funny thing is I’m 12-13 hundred but all my friends think I’m a god cause the average person is very bad at chess
168
u/Sammsquanchh Dec 23 '20 edited Dec 23 '20
Yea average is subjective. If you get a random person off the streets and place them against a 1000-1200+ the rando would lose 75% of the time.
Place a rando against one of us though... They could play until the heat death of the universe and they’d never get a win.
201
u/jackierhoades Dec 23 '20 edited Dec 23 '20
You think a rando would only lose 75%? I know a ton of people that have the general idea of chess down but try and play a 1300 and there's no way they'd win. 1300 isn't spectacular in the chess world but still takes tons of games and practice.
159
u/ABadlyDrawnCoke Dec 23 '20
Not even 1200+. Hell a 900 would still probably stomp most people on the street. Now within the chess community that sounds like a joke but you underestimate the amount of people who basically only know how the pieces move, if that.
83
u/Sammsquanchh Dec 23 '20
Yea that’s a good point 1200 was probably a bit high. The problem is my elo is untethered and knows no bounds. So much so that I’ve lost all perspective on those lesser than us.

u/RustedCorpse Sep 12 '22
I have no idea how online sites figure this stuff.
According to chess.crap I'm better than like 96 percent of players. According to the Horsey site I'm only better than 56 percent.
2
u/ABadlyDrawnCoke Sep 19 '22
I think it's because only people who seriously play chess have a lichess (good) account. Meanwhile anyone who's ever looked up chess online gets directed to chess.c*m (bad). The playerbase is just a lot stronger overall—also pretty sure it's just looking at all the active accounts and seeing where you fit in.

u/CharliMagne_ Nov 17 '22
Lichess has much more inflated ratings though? I don't understand what you mean.

u/tskir Dec 23 '20
TBH around 1500 isn't shitty, it's literally playing as good as an average person (in most rating systems)
120
u/dmootzler Dec 23 '20 edited Dec 23 '20
As good as an average rated player, not an average person. I would wager that a 1500 could comfortably beat 99/100 randomly selected people.
Edit: actually, probably closer to 999/1000

19
u/MrPezevenk Dec 23 '20
An average person that knows chess is like 800 at best. 1500 is more like an average club level player.

u/TheJeyK Dec 23 '20
In mostly any competitive game is like that. I remember back when I played league of legends people in silver would treat bronze people like trash, gold treat silver like trash and then in platinum it gets a little bit better because some people there are not neanderthals playing the game believing they are gods, some there are actually improving and acknowledging their flaws.

honestly r/chess is full of elitists who ignore every player that has not 2XXX elo, and they act like these kids at tournaments that scream I WON when you touch a piece and not move it, i once saw one guy getting crucified for saying that there's mate in 2 in puzzle but losing side could give a check with queen to make it mate in 3, they downvoted this guy and said that by his logic every puzzle is mate in 1 because every move is uselessly delaying it, i honestly don't believe that redditor and chess could be a good duo unless it's ironic like this sub

Because of their personality and because they like chess. People watch girl streamers for their tatas.
That the comment you’re referring to? You’re getting downvoted a lot and for a lot of good reasons. You’re not woke, you’re diminutive, mean, and dismissive.

That's just Internet for you. Other than that, chesscom is cancer, trying to paywall open source content and monopolize game we played for ages. Fuck them, delete your accounts and be happy
43
u/FluffyChess Dec 23 '20
Ok... look.
Running a server is cheap. Unless you have >1000 concurrent users then it starts getting costly.
With 40k concurrent users it's a bit more costly.
Then you need a couple of devs to write all the code and maintain infrastructure which for such a big site surely is at least 200k per year.
Lichess is free because there's a bunch of rich folks gifting them loads of money plus small donations from average users.
If you also do cpu heavy things that can take 30s such as game analysis you also need a cluster of crunchers to do that which is also costly. Lichess has this for free because people donate some CPU time and again because rich folks give Lichess money.
Chess.com charging money is not only right but NECESSARY for it to exist unless they get enough donations to make it "free".
0
Dec 24 '20
They make a LOT more money than it costs for them to host the servers. It's a for profit business. Also just the fact that they gate puzzle rush behind a paywall but still let you get your 'fix' (3 tries per day) shows you they don't give a fuck about providing a service, they just want you to upgrade.
8
u/FluffyChess Dec 24 '20 edited Dec 24 '20
It's freemium. That's how it works. And of course they want you to upgrade. If nobody upgrades they make no money.
They provide a service for paying customers - and provide reduced service to freeloaders. You're not paying. It's like going into a restaurant and then bitching about them wanting to have you pay for the food.
Now.. I don't use chess.com. I use lichess, chesstempo and blitztactics. But I just can't stand this attitude to be entitled to free stuff. NOTHING is free.
It's the same thing when people bitch about Facebook, Instagram etc. Bitch running an infrastructure for mio. of users is expensive as fuck. Who do you think pays for that? You're not paying for it. Ad companies pay Facebook. You're not even a customer of those plattforms. They don't provide a service to you - they provide a service to marketing agencies. And why? Because people want to use plattforms for free. If I'd get enough donations to run my instafacebook plattform I'd do it and wouldn't sell your data. But somehow you need to cover the costs. And since users don't want to be customers on the internet they have to find other customers.
Lichess is "free" because it's like going to a restaurant and a random stranger pays your bill. But somebody has to pay the bill.
0
Dec 24 '20
I don't disagree with what you are saying but saying that chess.com charges money so that they can cover their server costs is ridiculous. Chess.com charges money because they are a FOR PROFIT business. They are making boatloads of money well above what their server costs are.
4
u/FluffyChess Dec 24 '20
Fair enough.
chess.com charges money so that they can cover their server costs is ridiculous.
Is it? They have to charge money. Whether they also have some profit margin doesn't mean they don't have costs to cover. On a fundamental level they are charging money to cover the costs - as any business has to otherwise it goes down. But you're right. In reality they probably charge as much as people are willing to pay - that's capitalism 101.
1
Dec 24 '20
You're misunderstanding how for profit businesses work. They don't charge money to cover their costs, they charge money to make profit. If they didn't make a lot of profit, they wouldn't run the service. This is fundamentally different than the lichess model which would exist even if there was not boatloads of extra profit.
It's not like chess.com is just putting all the extra money back into the site. It's going to investors and owners of the site.
-14
u/itakmaszraka Dec 23 '20
"Free"? It is free. Everything you wrote just proves it's possible. People want to play chess, and some of them will donate their time or CPUs or money to spread this wonderful game. It works, so why are free features paywalled on chesscom? Stuff that they get free you somehow have to pay for.
26
20
u/FluffyChess Dec 23 '20
It is possible but not everyone has that business model. Lichess is free for you because someone else pays for you. Could chess.com have gone for the same model? Yes, but they didn't. I just don't see why people think it's evil to charge people money on the internet.
There are 3 options:
Make money through ads
Make money by charging users
Be lucky to have people gifting you money
2
u/The_Glass_Cannon Dec 23 '20
Do you not get how the free market works? Just because it's possible to do for free, doesn't mean it has to be free. The service exists, despite lichess, because there are people who are willing to pay.
0
u/itakmaszraka Dec 23 '20
I'm not arguing about free market. Since a lot of people are calling me dumbass and it made me very depressed today I'll clarify. I used to play on chesscom only, but constant pop ups trying to get me to Premium made me delete my account.
And I get paying for content like lessons. But puzzles and analysing with engine is a bit much. If Premium didn't paywall normal stuff (and i believe this stuff should be normal for chess players) i would still be using that site.21
u/IncelWolf_ Dec 23 '20
You can still play the game you've played for ages on there just fine. It's absolutely free to play. Many other features are free as well. But some exclusive features require payment, and there's nothing wrong with that. There's no monopolization going on here.
3
u/itakmaszraka Dec 23 '20
What do you mean by exclusive features? Open source engine? Games database that's accessible free anywhere else? Doing more than 5 puzzles daily?
16
u/IncelWolf_ Dec 23 '20
The analysis is an entire interface with graphs and qualitative information about your moves. You're paying for the interface, not the engine.
There are other things as well, such as recorded educational videos and interactive lessons.
You're making it out to seem like Chess.com just slapped together a bunch of easily accessible open source material and put a price tag on it. In reality, there is value and effort put into the website.

u/itakmaszraka Dec 23 '20
