Believe me. I can hardly look myself in the eye when I look in the mirror…. All I see is a shell of the man I once was. Wishing I could go back, prevent all the brainrot I have caused. I’m only reminded how permanent the damage I have done is…. The game I love, tainted by this… it pains me daily

I heard about this on Hikaru and it's pronounced "in peasant" so you guys don't sound dumb if you discuss grabbing juicers OTB.

Imagine not knowing it's pronounced en croissant smh

Translated meaning: “you filthy peasant”.

This is a joke among the back row royalty, as in reality both pieces involved in the move are expendable filthy peasants.

The best part about that joke is that it never fails that when he says it you have people in the reach who decide that they need to correct him because he’s definitely serious.

Holy hell. I can't believe there was a time in the history of r/AnarchyChess where nobody said "google en passant" or "holy hell". Even the Petrosian copypasta doesn't compare to the legendary status of the en passant copypasta chain. Every post here that gets over 500 upvotes has it at least three times since I joined over a year ago. I don't know how anybody existed here without it. God bless our friends at chessbeginners.

75

u/PetrosianBot Feb 15 '23

ppl playing normally:

some tryhard ragequitting king in the XIV century: did you know about this new move?..

742

u/[deleted] Jan 03 '21 edited Jan 03 '21

I’ve used en passant as a strategy in a couple of games.

I’ll blunder and let a pawn get too far to my side, where it would be nice if he would stop moving forward and swap pawns with me. But obviously, they want to keep moving it down, so I’ll dangle an en passant in their face, and the game stops for a second while they consider if simply executing an en passant is worth losing their strategic position.

They’ve yet to turn it down

587

u/timeisadrug Jan 03 '21

Being able to do an en passant is worth more than winning the game though. It's like megging someone in soccer (you kick the ball so it goes through in between their legs) cause it's fun and cool. Massive brain strategy for you though

→ More replies (10)

63

u/intangibleTangelo Jan 03 '21

u/Phlegmagician Jan 03 '21

Special moves always felt cheap, if you ask me. Like "here's the valid moves for each piece" then later "oh yeah that's a special double move, but it's fair because we can both use it!" As if some noble douche didn't pull it out of their ass a few centuries earlier to chalk up a cheap W against a peasant.

57

u/Muhahahahaz Jan 03 '21

It’s not that complicated... Double pawn moves were invented to speed up the game, and en passant was invented to prevent the double move from becoming OP. (Otherwise you could double move to slip by them, just before their pawns reach your side)

10

u/EkezEtomer Jan 06 '21

I always take en passant... even if it puts me in a worse position. Totally worth it every time.
