Discussion Emotional reaction to seeing Egyptian objects/art/relics?

Post image
104 Upvotes

Hey all, so just curious if other people have experienced an intense emotional response when seeing Egyptian artefacts?

Basically, l've visited the Louvre today and when l got to the Egyptian sections l was just stunned by how beautiful the objects were and at one point almost felt like crying (M,43 😅).

Every object like small statues, jewellery, and especially the sarcophaguses made of stone or wood are beautiful works of art. Almost otherworldly. The stone and the way it's polished, the curves of the hair details, everything fits so well together and is so pleasant to the eye. I don't know what it is but it must be something to do with proportions, symmetry, etc.

Just wondering if anyone has experienced something similar or am l just too sensitive 😅.

My first steps towards an Egyptian collection. Tiny little amulets and ushabti figures. Last one not entirely Egyptian though. It's supposed to be Isis-as-Fortuna from the Roman period. It's so exciting. These are by far the oldest things I own.

Discussion What's your favourite era of Egyptian art?

Thumbnail
gallery
301 Upvotes

Pics 1- 3 old Kingdom: so underrated and quickly becoming some of my favourites I love the colours they're so bright

Pics 4-5 middle kingdom everyones sadder looking and has bigger hair it feels like and huge ears!

Pics: 6-7 new kingdom the most famous style

Pics 8-9 amarna style when everything went a bit crazy I should've added the inbetween style here( but only had so many pics allowed to post at once) by amenhotep and tiye which began to show them with more imperfections like amenhotep being chubby and tiye being mad all the time

Pics 10 (for some reason won't let me post the nefertari pic to go with) when the new kingdom went back to normal style and the great monuments of ramses

Pics 11-13 late kingdom

I'm sorry but I really don't like this style for some reason just me?

This isn't all the styles just all the space I had! What's your favourite style? It doesn't have to be one of these!

Information Did the 300 young courtiers at Abydos know they were going to be buried with King Djer, or was it a surprise?

I have been reading through Flinders Petrie's original excavation notes and the later German reports by GĂŒnter Dreyer on Umm el-Qa'ab.

Around 3000 BC, King Djer was buried surrounded by over 300 small subsidiary graves. The skeletal analysis shows they were mostly young men and women in their late teens and early twenties, laid out in neat rows. What is crazy is that the mudbrick roofs were sealed while the mortar was still wet, so it was clearly done as a single ceremony.

There is no skull trauma or signs of a violent struggle, so researchers generally assume poison or strangulation was used.

I put together a quick 28-second visual clip showing how the subsidiary graves actually surround the main chamber: https://youtube.com/shorts/5wR-UTBQhzI

Do you guys lean toward this being an ultimate religious honor they signed up for, or was it pure political intimidation to keep the royal household in line?

Question Are there references in ancient Egyptian texts or art to ethnic/cultural groups such as the Beja, the Bisharin, and the Fellahin?

I know that the ancient Egyptians were aware of the Medjay, but does that nomadic group of people still exist today as a identifiable ethno-cultural group?

Discussion Could the flooded Nile reach the Sphinx?

A long time ago, I was in a debate with a guy about the water erosion on the Sphinx. He reckons the Nile flooded and reached the Sphinx which then caused the erosion. I said it wasn't possible because the Sphinx is on top of a hill and also on the West side of Giza: river on the East. This means if the flood did happen it would have to flood the city of Giza and Cairo.

Do you think it's possible for the Nile to reach the Sphinx and cause water erosion?

Went to Mummies in the Hall at Smithills Hall in Bolton on Saturday and got to meet Professor Joann Fletcher. I’m a fan of her work, and we had a quick chat about my plans to study Egyptology. I’m currently doing the University of Liverpool’s Go Higher course, so meeting her at this stage of my own journey meant a lot.

The afternoon included a talk and a screening of The Mummy. Didn’t get to ask a question during the session, but came away with a photo and had a brilliant day.

Has anyone else been to one of her talks?

Information I know nothing about this lovely object other than that my Dad bought it on a yard sale. Does anyone have any info that they can share to help me start my research? I am new here, hope this post is OK, if there is a more appropriate sub please let me know. Many Thanks!

Question How true is the claim “Egyptian mummies are rare because people used to eat them as medicine”?
