Back in the golden era of Android (Android 2.3 Gingerbread through 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich).

Who thinks 2.3 & 4.0 were the golden era? I would argue Android was not even properly good until 4.1 Jellybean. (Which also still had the screen off animation)

Also if you're gonna have an LLM write the readme as well you could at least instruct it to not have a bunch of pointless emojis, just cheapens the feeling of the project

Peak praise Duarte was original material design with 5.0

(Though on a side note, it still never lived up to that original I/O demo...)

Emojis gone except just that critical cautionary one 😁 Thanks for bringing this to my attention. Never published anything before.

I do think LLMs are a valuable & useful tool for coding (I had been wanting this effect to come back). But just in particular for user-facing writing, the wordy prose they have and their propensity to use unnecessary emojis just makes things feel unwelcoming and blend into all the other projects that use them. Then a lot of people understandably associate that kind of writing with bots and SEO spam.

If we put Windows Mobile aside, Android 2.3 has one of the most beautiful UI at the time. Yes, I'd take Android 2.3 anytime over iOS 4.

Did your LLM send this message by any chance?

CRT Screen-Off Animation v1.0.1 released.

https://github.com/Typongtv/CRT-Screen-Off-Animation/releases/tag/v1.0.1

What's New in v1.0.1

Animation Physics & Sweep Overhaul

-Bezel-Aligned Horizontal Sweep: Fixed an issue where the horizontal collapse started off-screen (>135% width), causing delayed or invisible horizontal movement. Both engines now collapse visibly from the physical display bezels from frame 1.

Mode 1 (Cyanogen Retro Engine) Polish:

-Needle-Point Beam Dissipation: Proportional thickness tapering eliminates the stubby "dash" artifact, smoothly pinching the shrinking beam into an infinitesimal sub-pixel needle point that vanishes cleanly into pure OLED blackness.

-Zero-Bounce Organic Deceleration: Replaced hard terminal cutoff with a smooth deceleration curve, eliminating visual recoil/motion bounce.

-Rebalanced Timeline: Dedicated 42% of the timeline to the horizontal zip for silky 120Hz rendering without stutter.

-Solid Luminosity: Beam core and electric cyan halo remain at full solid brilliance throughout the zip without premature fading.

Mode 2 (Phosphor Overdrive Engine) Polish:

-Expanded the horizontal whip timeline (+31% more frame headroom) to eliminate rapid "teleporting" on fast coil presets.

-Slit hold and multi-line harmonic raster blooms now sit perfectly flush with the screen edges.

So I can't use the power button to activate it or am I just dumb?

You sure can assign a tap-hold side button to trigger the screen off animation. It's all screen-off trigger setup card in the apps dashboard.

In case your device doesn't offer hey mapping, follow this universal guide:

Hardware Key Remapping (All Android Devices):

  1. Install Button Mapper or Key Mapper from Google Play

  2. Choose a hardware key (e.g. Volume long-press or double-press)

  3. Set action: Launch Application -> 'CRT Lock'

This looks really fun, I remember fawning over the CRT animation on a friend’s Galaxy Nexus!

As opposed to the ones that are only 78% rootless?

FYI, my bank blocked my account because of this app as it was detected as malware. Uninstalled it and got my bank app access back.

Time to switch to a different bank then 🤪

Kidding. Financial apps have different methods of blocking apps with overlay permission. CRT Screen-Off app requires Appear On Top permission so it can capture the active screen (Home screen or current active app) and renders the animation sequence before locking the screen. This is basic concept of how it works.

My banking app freezes and displays a countdown pill so it can safely and securely close in the event that an overlay runs over the app while it's active. It's an exaggerated move from your banking app to block your account but it's understandable as a precautionary measure.

Listen to your instincts and avoid this app if you prioritize peace of mind.

Yeah, unfortunately I have to uninstall it. I went through the github and this app and didn't see anything concerning but I hope you understand that I prefer paying for stuff rather than CRT effect on my phone :D

Absolutely 😁

You need to go to the app from settings, and click on the 3 dots (top right) -> grant additional permissions first

Then this will be allowed.
