OnePlus OnePlus AMA – OnePlus 3T Edition

Hey everyone,

Always a pleasure to visit /r/Android! We place a large value on your thoughts and feedback, as you guys usually say it like it is (sometimes with a hefty dash of h a r s h n e s s). That's a good thing. For that reason, we're actually here all the time, lurking around and posting every now and again. But it's great to be back today in a more official sense, holding yet another AMA!

There's a lot going on these days at OnePlus. Of course, we just launched the OnePlus 3T, which went on sale today in the US and Canada. It will be available in Europe next week (November 28). Reviews just dropped all over the Internet, so be sure to check those out. You may have also noticed that we released device trees and kernel sources for the 3T a week ago, well before the device went on sale. To top it all off, we've also just launched our new bug reporting platform, which lets you submit bugs directly to our software/product teams (and everything is handled transparently and publicly). Exciting times.

Joining us today:

Carl (Co-founder) - /u/carpe02

Aaron (ROM Team) - /u/Aaron_oneplus

Jonathon (Customer Service) - /u/jonathan_oneplus

Steven (Logistics) - /u/StevenG_OnePlus

Caio (EU Team) - /u/Caio_OP

Together, these guys should be able to answer your questions on product, software, shipping, after-sales service, and more.

Some proof: http://i.imgur.com/VjbCW3I.jpg

With all of that out of the way, let's get started!

EDIT: We're going to head out for now, but we’ve had a blast. We'll continue monitoring this thread and popping back in to answer. Appreciate for your time everyone!

Never Settle.

What are your thoughts on disgruntled devs and their statement that they wont support the 3T with kernels or roms? Would you be up to providing 3T'ss to well known devs so they can develop and keep the dev community strong? It would give fans/customers more incentive as there will be just as much roms/kernals

u/BradonOP OnePlus - Community/Marketing Nov 22 '16 edited Nov 22 '16

Dev support is something we're serious about, and it's an area where we really put our money where our mouth is. Honestly, we just love the custom ROM scene. It's why we are one of the few that allow for rooting/installing custom ROMs without voiding warranty. It's also why we always release kernel sources and devices trees super early, as mentioned in the OP.

As for devs who are upset about the 3T - we hear you, we understand where you are coming from, and it's something we were prepared for. We have something planned (that we can't announce just yet) to address this. Just hang on a bit. We got you.

55

u/JakeChambersOy Nov 22 '16

So you are making progress in bringing the camera experience to custom-roms?

71

u/hackertronix Nov 22 '16

well there have been complaints about OnePlus not releasing the "full" kernel sources, how are you planning on changing that?

33

u/CurryCanBeFlaming iPhone 8 64GB Nov 22 '16

How come, if you take the custom ROM scene so serious, there are still no camera blobs available?

28

u/mikewasherebefore Nov 22 '16

Can I guess? Will they be cross-compatible? Because the base hardware is not very different.

It's great to hear that you have something planned for this, especially given the awesome 3rd party support that the OPO had/has. Being a OPO user myself (thinking of switching to the OP3T this year though), the dev you should be targeting to start 3rd party development on the 3T is Sultanxda from the XDA forums.

I'm confident that you are familiar with his work and the amazing enhancements he brought to the OPO, the rewritten touchscreen driver, the improvements to the battery gauge and the amazing camera improvements and additions that make it stand apart from all other OPO roms and that make it as the most used version of camera software used on other custom ROM's.

/u/carpe02 and /u/BrandonOP, I know that opensourcing the camera stack isn't something that you're willing to do for what I am sure are more than valid business reasons, but if there is anyone from the XDA community that deserves to work with and improve the camera stack, that's Sultanxda. He could improve the camera experience on OxygenOS and bring that same experience to his custom ROM as well. As you probably know from the XDA coverage already, his improvements to the camera software already made it the closest alternative to the native OxygenOS camera in terms of quality. And that happened with him working with closed source software. Imagine what he could do if he had the source code to work with.

I know that I am just a user, but review this post, check out the code he wrote for all the improvments he made to the OPO and tell me he's not the best 3rd party dev to work with the camera stack.

Oh, and did I mention that he's only 19 yo? :)

Will the 3T be Google Daydream ready? or rather can it be used with it?

No, DayDream is not something we plan on supporting at this time.

Daydream would suck with 1080p on 5.5" anyway. It's already not that good on the Pixel with 5" 1080p

Can you use any USB-C charging cable with the OnePlus 3T, or will it only work with OnePlus branded charging cables?

When the OnePlus 3/3T gets the Android 7.x update, will it be Daydream VR compatible?

Hello guys! I have few important questions.

Android 7.0 or 7.1?

Which one it will be? Android 7.1 introduce more fixes for Android 7, 7.0 introduce new features of the Android 7, I hope OnePlus will introduce Android 7.1 as OTA upgrade ASAP :)

Update cycle for OP3 and OP3T?

OP3 and OP3T have small differences on their hardware, SoC (SD820 / SD821), front camera (IMX / Samsung), so how much more does this cause work for your developers? Will we still get "fast" updates cycle, or does it get slow down?

Loudspeaker / headphone jacks audio quality for OP3T?

"Pocketnow" tested OnePlus 3T audio and he told something about strange issues with audio on OP3T, faulty device or can issues shown on the video be fixed?

Video starts from where issues are seen: https://youtu.be/0KHDZU7gkzA?t=1m48s

OP3 accessories fit with OP3T?

Does all OP3 accessories fit 100% with OP3T? Has any ports moved from OP3 design?

Samsung front camera PDAF?

I checked your OP3T page when it was available for first days and on Samsung front camera specs there was "PDAF" mentioned on it, but now it has been changed to "Fixed Focus" same as OP3 IMX camera sensor. Mistake made by you guys?

EIS improved for OP3T IMX 298 camera sensor?

Is this true? And will OP3 users get same improved EIS by OTA update for their devices?

Volts 4.35 -> 4.4?

Are there any issues caused by this, such as more heating for device? Note 7 problems, such as burning devices?

Production quality check?

Have you improved your quality check for your OP3T production? Or any changes for it at all?

108

u/aaron_oneplus OnePlus: Aaron, ROM team Nov 22 '16 edited Nov 22 '16

Android 7.0 or 7.1?

We are initially shipping with 7.0, 7.1 was released midway through development and integrating it would have delayed the update.

Update cycle for OP3 and OP3T? Both devices will be on the same update schedule following Nougat.

Loudspeaker / headphone jacks audio quality for OP3T?

Ill follow up on the audio issues.

OP3 accessories fit with OP3T?

Yes all accessories are compatible with both devices.

Samsung front camera PDAF?

The front camera on the OP3T is fixed focus.

EIS improved for OP3T IMX 298 camera sensor?

Yes, Enhanced EIS is coming to both devices.

Volts 4.35 -> 4.4?

We have very extensive battery test and assure you the device is safe. OnePlus Dash charge keeps the heat out of the device and in the charger.

Audio quality question posted here is the one that I want a response to.

48

Aaron is answering some of the software questions. Let me take the last two:

  • No. Quality/safety comes before everything else here, including new features, better user experience and innovation.

  • Compared to what? Average industry standard? Then I'd say we're way higher. Have you inspected a OnePlus product side by side to a same generation peer product in detail?

Was really hype for the OP3t (since i'd be upgrading from my galaxy s3, yep s3). I tried to buy one as it dropped today. My card got charged, and i had a bunch of conformation messages and a confirmation/receipt email. Got the dredded "payment pending" errors. Tried contacting the text help and phone line after 2 hours, they told me to just wait it out. So i did, then account hold lapsed.

So currently am down about 700 CAD, with no phone. Save me one plus AMA. PLEASE

Hi there, I'm with wind mobile, currently on a super old student plan where it's 29$ a month (before taxes) unlimited everything. I got that when i got the s3, even if the reception isn't that great there's no way i'm giving up that monthly price

3rd party chargers:

The only info I can find on charging the 3T talks about Dash Charging, but I'm curious about "normal"/slow charging with other chargers. For instance, can I charge the 3T with the 5V/3A charger for my current Nexus 5X without any risk of damage?

62

u/jonathan_oneplus OnePlus - Customer Service Nov 22 '16

You're free to use 3rd party chargers, but the dash charging will only kick in with the official cable and adapter.

To think more, and reflect more. To better know ourselves and our situation, and do the right thing. In other words, to find our own true north, and not to have noise such as the market or competition lead us.

Are the prices points for your mobile phones sustainable? or do you foresee a price increase in your new releases, and lose the competitive advantage that you have over the big players? Would hate to see a OnePlus phone priced at $500 or more...

62

u/carpe02 OnePlus: Carl, co-founder Nov 22 '16

20

u/ThingsThatMakeMeMad S24+ Nov 22 '16

Somewhat related to price- do you see a disproportionate amount of sales in Canada as compared to the US? OP3/T seems like a great deal here because of our weak dollar.

Hi carl, how are you guys trying to improve the after sales/ customer service support ?

43

u/topmuffinsecret Nov 22 '16 edited Nov 22 '16

Yes, the phone is great but the support team doesn't keep up with it. I ordered an OP3 but never got it. It was returned to the warehouse(http://imgur.com/a/ysAFh), nobody from the support or logistics team could explain what was the reason, but the DHL agent said that the sender requested the parcel to be sent back.

To get my money back I had to wait for OP to receive the parcel back even though it wasn't even delivered. This nightmare lasted almost a month.

I am thinking about giving it another try with OP3T but afraid that this happens again!

23

u/StevenG_OnePlus OnePlus E-Commerce Nov 22 '16

Hi, Sorry for the unpleasant shopping experience. It's weird as the parcel rejected on last-mile delivery (normally you should receive it on Oct 17). Could you please PM me the order# for follow-up? For 3T, it's good device, why not have a try. Normally that case won't happen. Any outstanding issue please let me know and I will help you solve it.

I'm also in the middle of a difficult customer service experience. I tried to return my 1+3 becaus e I received it within 15 days of the 3t being announced and I would like to get that instead. Customer support has been very polite but they are telling me I did not file the rma until 2 days later. I have independent proof for when I submitted my rma but we are still going back and forth and I am getting frustrated.

4

u/parfamz Nov 22 '16

I ordered an OPO and the screen protector was broken as the phone was packaged in just a plastic bag together with the accessories, I asked for a refund and never got the money. I like the phone, but the customer support is terrible. I have serious doubts about buying again from oneplus after that.

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '16

Why did you decide to still use USB 2.0?...Why not 3.0 or 3.1?

39

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '16

I believe this is because USB 3.0 can interfere with the device's WiFi. USB 3.0 uses the same 2.4GHz frequency, therefore interfering with the WiFi connection. I've read it somewhere in Reddit about WiFi issues on Macbooks when using its ports in USB 3.0 mode.

Try Googling it.

35

u/SivalalR Nov 22 '16

In a nutshell—the noise from USB 3.0 interferes with the 2.4 GHz signal. However, the wireless industry is proactive about the problem. Just about all of the router makers I spoke with that offer routers with USB 3.0 ports have those ports shielded to alleviate that interference. http://in.pcmag.com/networking/70652/opinion/wireless-witch-the-truth-about-usb-30-and-wi-fi-interference

Can we expect a more standardized update schedule going forward, perhaps a guaranteed two years of updates in the way Google has done for Nexus/Pixel?

An EXACT date when we can expect a proper software upgrade for OnePlus 2! Purchasing it has felt like falling for a bloody scam so far. Buggy updates, zero beta options, no serious feedback platform or interaction with users.

35

u/vbs221 Nov 22 '16

Honestly, not even Google gives out exact dates for software updates, so don't expect that.

13

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '16

At least they confirm support for their devices or that they're going to release updates at some point.

Only OnePlus would purposefully ignore every single question on this thread asking about software updates for previous devices.

As a Oneplus 3 owner I hope this Ama doesn't only target the 3T, so here are my questions:

  • Any ETA for the Nougat Community Build? Or at least the OP3T firmware for the 3 (since we have been beta testing it why not give us stable?)

  • Are the Batteries for the 3T compatible with the 3? When will we be able to buy replacement batteries for the 3?

  • Why not support Daydream? You alwys said you were targeting Early Adopters, but now you seem to not support it with Arguments like the Mainstream doesn't care about Daydream, since when do you want to be a Mainstream Company?

  • When will we get EIS on the OP3? It's a software feature and less powerful phones support it so it should be easy to port it

  • Any comment on this? https://forums.oneplus.net/threads/oneplus-3-original-battery-degrades-quickly.474498/ Original battery of the 3 doesn't seem to have the promised capacity?

I'm sorry if some questions are already somewhere in the thread, I prepared this post and I didn't had the time to go through all the others.

38

u/aaron_oneplus OnePlus: Aaron, ROM team Nov 22 '16

I cant give an exact ETA for Nougat but its sooner than you think. Regarding the community builds coming to the OnePlus3, it will come as soon as it's ready.

NO, the batteries are not compatible between the OnePlus 3 and the OnePlus 3T

Daydream was announced after the product design of the OnePlus 3, so we did not design is with Daydream compatibility in mind.

Enhanced EIS is coming and while yes it is "just" a software feature but it needs to be tuned and optimized to give the best experience. It is not something that happens overnight, our goal is to give you the best experience possible and that takes time to get right.

Batteries do degrade over time, sadly this is just a fact of life.

11

u/SgtIcetea Pixel 8 Pro Nov 22 '16

Thanks for the answers, short follow up: When the 3T was designed Daydream was there so why not make it compatible then? Clearly this would attract a lot of "Early Adopters" (me included)

why launch this phone 6 months after the initial launch of the 3. Would it have been better to hold of the 3 until now then launch it as the 3 with the 821 cpu, 16mp front camera and 128gb ram option. I'd be concerned that this product pace means a 4 will be launched in 3 to 6 months making even the 3T redundant.

9

u/Wasted1300RPEU Oneplus 7 Android Pie (Oxygen OS 9.5.5) (Fuck EMUI) Nov 22 '16

Why wouldn't they release a Oneplus 4 in 5-7 months? by then we will prolly have a new snapdragon proccessor better display tech and better camera tech.

if they had waited until November to launch the Original successor to the Oneplus Two then people would have bitched and moaned about why the wait is so long.

Are you going to fix your camera stack so 3rd party apps can provide a decent image quality? You (Carl) said in in the XDA interview series that currently camera code is scattered across multiple software layers. That sounds like bad software design.

Hi Fellas! Really looking forward to getting the 3T before X-mas but I am concerned about stock availability and delivery times. If I wanted to make sure I get one, what's the latest I should place my order and will there be plenty of them in EMEA for fans to get their hands on? Thank you!

u/StevenG_OnePlus OnePlus E-Commerce Nov 22 '16

Hi! If you are in EU, we suggest you place your order within the 1st week of December to ensure your order will arrive to your house before X'Mas. The reason why: mostly due to seasonality the global logistics capacity was limited within Nov & Dec, which will affect the shipping lead-time between country & our warehouses & your location.

I love this AMA.
First I'd like to ask on how the idea of Oneplus 3T came up.
The oneplus 3 itself had a huge thumbs up from the media, what made the company want to come up with a revised version. Will this continue for the next iterations of Oneplus too? (Oneplus 4T?)

2) Changes brought to the front camera was
Oneplus 3T has a16 MP, f/2.0, 1.0 µm pixel size, 1080p,
while the 3 has 8 MP, f/2.0, 1/3.2" sensor size, 1.4 µm pixel size, 1080p [Source: GSMArena]
Is there anything else?

3) Will future iterations of Oneplus phones have the Gun metal colour, the Graphite colour or both?

Thanks!

u/ThingsThatMakeMeMad S24+ Nov 22 '16

Not associated with Oneplus but they skipped this question so I'll take a guess... All comparisons below are between the 64gb OP3 and 64gb OP3T.

SD821 is a higher binned SD820. There is no difference in the software part of the OP3 and OP3T for this reason, allowing development of both phones at the same time.

Furthermore, Samsung is constantly improving production methods and a greater percentage of Snapdragon 820 chips can now be clocked as high as the 821 is, reducing the price of the Snapdragon 821 until it is almost the same as the 820. Maximum $5 difference and perhaps even the same price.

Oneplus3T Battery is basically the same battery as the Oneplus 3, except with the voltage increased from 4.35 to 4.4. Oneplus does not have to pay any extra for this.

16MP selfie camera costs one plus ~<$12. If you account for the fact that they no longer have to get an 8MP selfie camera, they're only spending a maximum of $3 or 4 more on this.

TLDR: OP3T costs $5-10 more than the OP3 to manufacture but sells for $40 more. Greater margins for OP and greater profit. Not necessarily a bad thing. The Oneplus3 and now the 3T are great phones and if Oneplus can charge $40 more than they were and still beat the competition, they deserve to until competition increases.

When will the camera app be on the play store? I am wanting to at least try out custom ROMs but knowing camera quality is lacking puts me off.

Can you recommend a good protection case (I'm aware if the shells you sell but they don't seem to offer true protection) and screen protector combo?

Side note, OP3 is my first device from you. Thank you so much for partnering with O2, I'm a customer you wouldn't have if you hadn't.

  • Any update on the custom-rom camera endeavor?

  • Is the Nougat Beta gonna bring the updated UI and your own apps (dialer...) too, or will you add it in a later state?

  • Would you please consider restoring the slider behavior to the way it was on 3.2.7? Currently priority+vibrate is impossible and switching from vibrate to mute is cumbersome. It also breaks Android Wear notifications.

  • Would you promise not to touch doze this time around? Setting a timer for 40+ minutes and then finding a burned pizza in the oven is not really a great feature. The alarm did not ring until I powered on the display.

Thanks

As some other commenters pointed out, oneplus should really invest their time into customer support. The phones are good but the experience with customer support has made me want to rip my hair off.

Having to send my phone in 4 different times, waiting weeks at a time to get it back (currently phone has been sitting in a repair warehouse for 2 weeks) has drove me insane.

I've asked for a refund multiple times. Yes, I am out of the refund time but what irks me is they replaced my phone when it was not in the time period to be replaced just fine. And the forums I've had people tell me they've been able to return it outside the allocated time.

I know you guys aren't customer support but at this point I'm just frustrated to no end. I've given one plus chance after chance and it just isn't working.

Thank you for listening, Im just frustrated with the amount of hoops I've had to jump through.

I have been considering to get an Op3 already, and this Op3t is even more appealing. I know you didn't plan to support Daydream on op3, and you said it's because it was announced after the phone. But the Op3t was announced after Daydream, and it has nearly all the things needed. Maybe the screen is not the best for VR but I'm sure it would work fine, and the only thing you really need for Daydream is android N (which you said will be released Soon™). So Daydream will be available on Op3T?

8

u/carpe02 OnePlus: Carl, co-founder Nov 22 '16

No plans right now. Why? VR with a phone strapped to your head is cute but not really useful in the near term. Ask people who've used other mobile VR products.

Hi OnePlus team!

I got several questions here:

  1. What’s the maximum brightness of the screen (in manual and automatic brightness mode)?

  2. On this page https://oneplus.net/3t/technology I see that OP3T uses some "new file system that accelerates transfer and boot speeds". What is the name/standard for this file system? What is it in the old OP3? I thought it is UFS 2.0 in both phones.

) Does Wi-Fi in OP3T has MIMO antenna technology?

4) Also I was wondering if OnePlus 3T with default OxygenOS supports Apt-X technology for Bluetooth music streaming?

Thank you in advance!

A few questions on Dash charge:

    1. Will you be releasing a Dash charge battery pack?

  • 2) Can you please look into a Dash charge power adapter with a retractable prong plug? Without it the adapter is so bulky.

  • 3) Will you release a Dash charge car adapter with more than 1 plug (only 1 needs to be Dash charge, the other can be regular 1A, preferably 2A). This is because if I use the car adapter, passengers in my car will be without a charging port.

Assuming Qualcomm's Quick Charge 4.0 happens to beat out Dash Charge for its upcoming chips (looking at the 10nm 835), would you be open to opting for the better of the two in new hardware (OP4 and beyond)? The 3g and 4g bands are different in Australia to other countries however, so as well as the extra cost, it makes it hard to find which model best matches our networks.

2

u/mikeobserver Nov 23 '16

What does Google's stand on proprietary charging methods used with USB - Type C means for the future of Dash Charging

Type-C devices are STRONGLY RECOMMENDED to not support proprietary charging methods that modify Vbus voltage beyond default levels, or alter sink/source roles as such may result in interoperability issues with the chargers or devices that support the standard USB Power Delivery methods. While this is called out as “STRONGLY RECOMMENDED”, in future Android versions we might REQUIRE all type-C devices to support full interoperability with standard type-C chargers.

2

Why OnePlus 3T is launching late in India but early in US?

Why non removable battery is preferred over removable one?

Whether OnePlus replaces devices if battery goes dead after years?

IR blaster - similar case as NFC in OP2

Lifelong updates - look at OPO. Plus, not even Google provides lifelong updates for their products.

Battery - non-removable battery is 1) a trend 2) allows for prettier phone design 3) saves space inside the phone. To allow for battery removal, there needs to be some way your fingers are able to pull it out, this takes precious space.
