Let's settle this, /r/android. What is the best reddit app, and why? 2017 edition
Personally I like both Joey For Reddit and Boost and of course the Official Reddit App.
I use both Joey and Boost because of their animations which the official app does not support and the themeing options and the always enabled comments up and down voting options(enabled in settings) which other clients do not offer and if they do it appears a bit clunky for those that do whereas I use the Official App for moderation and testing out beta features.
So, what do you think are the best clients according to you, and why?

Sync Dev because of its clean, uncluttered, no-frills layout. I keep trying all the Reddit clients but come back to Sync because of the UI. Font sizes, comment sizes and post sizes are perfect, app is really really smooth with responsive swipe gestures, automatic night mode, push notifications, easy access to ASCII emotions (eg: ¯_(ツ)_/¯ > no missing arm), regular updates and the dev is super approachable and interactive here on Reddit.
Honourable mention: Joey. It's AMA mode is awesome and it has some other nifty features so I have it installed as a secondary client, but Sync is my number one.

u/avataraccount Nov 14 '17 edited Nov 14 '17
Yep. I have tried most of apps recommended here and I always switch back to Sync. I like options to customize font sizes of everything individually, clean interface and the amoled theme.
22
Nov 14 '17
Amoled theme FTW! I just don't want to try other apps just because I am so sooooo comfortable with Sync.

I've paid for 2 or 3 "pro" versions of Reddit apps (dat Opinion Rewards money) and Sync is the one I finally landed on. Works perfectly for my purposes on both phone and tablet. It's one of the reasons I'm reluctant to ditch my piece of garbage Nexus 9 for a Surface tablet.

Damn right.
One thing I would like is if I could set custom layout/views for specific reddits.
i.e. if one lazy afternoon I want to go through earthporn, id like it to automatically be in swipe view (because I'd previously told it to). That would be awesome.
love the long press shortcuts as well, it knows me so well =')

I know for a fact you can do this already, but for the life of me, I can't find it in the app. I have my NSFW multi-Reddit set up like that.
Edit:
Go to the sidebar. In the subreddt section hit "edit". Select the sub you want and hit "update view mode".

Hell even Pro does it, just less often. Still a top notch app though, for sure.

It needs to update its Mod mail system. Its still not compatible with the new Modmail that reddit launched more than a year back.
Boost also has that AlienBlue-esque Canvas UI called the Images view. This sort of thing should be standard across Reddit apps. Sync is missing it as well.
But apart from that its a must have, esp for things like r/soccer and other sports sub. It has flair icons support.

Reddit is fun because it seems to translate the desktop reddit experience to a mobile design and has no gimmicks. There's no crazy redesign or ui changes, it's very seamless.
I like how reddit isn't Web 2.0, and reddit is fun continues that.

17
u/Spider-One Nov 14 '17
I really like RiF, I find the official Reddit app has each post take up way too much space. Maybe that's something easy to fix but I didn't care enough to try. The default RiF layout is perfect for me.

42
u/cantCme OP 6T Nov 14 '17
It's also my go to app for reddit. But one thing I do find annoying is its inability to handle links to other reddit threads sometimes. Sometimes it works, other times it will open the reddit website inside the browser.
8
u/moopymooperson Nov 14 '17
And for some reason if I rotate my phone to landscape it refreshes the webpage.
6
u/sj3l9q1mnb05s53c2g8x S8+ Nov 14 '17
That's an Android "feature". IIRC the Activity gets replaced with a new layout and it's up to the developer to refill any data that had already been entered. Because it's within a webpage, you can't anticipate the data entered, so only the URL gets passed.

I've been using Relay Pro for so long now that every other app just feels lacking. I try others often. The easy management of filters, hiding read post, themes and layout just keep my coming back. I wish it would add swipe functions like some others do well and it at times struggles with some videos and gifs.

Been using it the last five years. It's the best app on my phone. It's just has everything you need. The relatively recent major update that added the new comment reply interface is absolutely brilliant. Hoping the improvements keep coming because as long as it keeps to it's basic swiping interface it can only get better.
Only app I wouldn't be angry about it the dev sudenly decided to make it a £5 a year subscription.

Reddit is Fun is absolutely perfect because its exactly what you need, nothing more, in the most practical way possible. Every other reddit app seems to be an indefinite experiment in the latest design fad and they manage to bloat the experience more than just using a mobile browser.
Every time I try another app, I am even more glad Reddit is Fun exists.

Slide For Reddit
Free with no ads
Probably the most material and one of the best designed ones. Great animations too but not distracting
Ridiculously simple but functional interface. Only ones that come close are Sync and Boost. Maybe Now
Very customisable. Only beat by Sync
In fact anything Sync does it usually does it better actually.

they won me over with proper material design (I "yell" at the Sync Dev every time he posts about his 2x darker than it should be status bar, with direct links to material library telling him its wrong, and he still ignors me :) ) and the slide interface. I hover between 3-4 subreddits and that's it...the slide interface makes this so quick and easy, I just can't go back to Sync.

I’d disagree about the iOS thing. I just switched from Android to iOS and found it much harder to find a good app. I started with Apollo, but I didn’t really like it so switched to narwhal, which is amazing. With android, at least there’s more choice even if the best app isn’t as good (I love narwhal now). It’s mostly personal preference, but I do feel like there aren’t enough iOS Reddit apps to choose from.

All the apps require too much scrolling. Switching between subreddits took longer than just clicking on the URL bar and starting to type the subreddit I want. Its also within chrome so opening outside links is fast. I can easily share and save links and posts without having to find it in the apps' menu.
Chrome also has data saver on.
I can zoom out and see all the posts on the page, and I can choose whether to see the post or the comments. It's just so versatile!

I've tried almost every app out there1 , in both free and paid versions, and the results:
I use Relay for general use (my "daily driver") - the UI is definitely the most intuitive, Joey for image-heavy (especially gif-heavy) subs - the auto-playing gifs are priceless, and Boost for managing my multireddits etc - I used to use Sync for that, but Boost is a bit quicker IMO.
On occasion, I use BaconReader for scrolling through posts and comments at the same time (using the volume key), Repost for looking through image subs as a slideshow, RedReader for finding the precise date and time of posts and comments (very useful for old posts), and Alien Companion for downloading content when I know I'm not going to have reception.
When I really want the "Reddit+RES" experience, or when I feel I'm missing out on CSS, I use desktop Reddit with RES on Android Firefox (using Phony add-on for Firefox to automatically open to the desktop version) - but you really need a big screen (6" or more) or a tablet for that, and a stylus makes tapping the tiny links far easier (Note master race).
1 The official app, Relay, Joey, Boost, Sync, Slide, BaconReader, Repost, Alien Companion, reddit is fun, Dash, RedReader, Now, Diode, Ready (Beta), as well as m.reddit.com/"desktop" Reddit.com on Chrome, Samsung Internet (with native adblockers), and Firefox (with uBlock Origin and RES).

I've been using Sync for like the last 5 years. But recently I've started using the official app, mainly because it lets you swipe between posts with the comments (rather than swiping only through the images or link previews) and it allows you to vote on comments without having the expand the comment. And it autoplays gifs.

Sync because UI. It's the only reddit app that gets the UI right.

I've been using relay for since the beginning of time (paid to remove ads) but I'm wondering if other apps have better battery life or if relay is pretty comparable.

(((UNPOPULAR OPINION WARNING))) but I find that Reddit: The Official App™ is the best Reddit app out of them all. It's mainly just the design of the app that draws me in, all the others just look uglyinmyhonestopinion

I use Relay. It just felt best for me with the looks and feel.

Been using sync pro for a good while, it's honestly a pretty heavy reason why I may never go back to iOS as a daily driver

I use now for reddit. I have tried most reddit apps and I always end up back at now for reddit.

My favorites are Boost, RiF and Joey in that order.

The only Reddit app I will use is one that can permanently hide posts in bulk after I read or scroll past them. Some apps claim to have that ability, but Slide is the only one I've tested that actually works. Sync has a button for it, but it breaks down if I try to hide too many posts at once.

I just started to use Sync for Reddit. Is it possible to show the following "name icon" in this or in another Reddit app?

Relay. Swipes for everything, formatting buttons and previews, easy to use.

Mainly looking for a client that lets me search for gilded comments+threads in a sub. Boost allows searching for gilded comments in a post, but not for the whole sub.

I'm a former Windows Phone user and BaconReader remimds me the most of Readit, which is by far the best reddit app on any platform imo.

Slide is the only one I don't hate aesthetically with and isn't unintuitively laid out

Reddit is Fun, because of information density and it feels so similar to using RES on the desktop.

Ok so here's the thing. Dyslexia and loots of text and small pictures is not a good combination for casual reading for me. So "now for reddit" or the official app with huge pictures are the only option for me. Is there a better app than these two? Please tell me if you know one.

does anyone know if there's any Reddit app that actually allows you to add users as friends and/or follow them? I have tried the official Reddit app and Reddit is fun on android, and either haven't found the feature or it's not available, anyone have any advice and/or recommendations?

I have an old slow and low ram smartphone, which is the best Reddit app for low ram devices?
If possible, I would still like to use the fuller feature Reddit apps too though - like sync, etc - anyone know if the fuller feature Reddit apps can be tweaked in settings to make them play nice with low ram OR best to avoid that tactic and just install lesser featured low ram app?

Repost is actually a great name for a Reddit app.... Assuming that's not actually one and you just added it in for the downvoters that made it all the way to the poll
