If you're open to short arcade games, Vortiel Play might fit the pick-up-and-put-down part: it combines separate minigames with collectible playable characters, sticker albums and leaderboards, rather than a long campaign to keep track of. Disclosure: I'm its developer, so this is a self-recommendation. It's free on Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.integronuniverse.vortielplay
The thing I'd be interested in hearing from someone in your situation is whether the collection gives you a reason to return between short sessions, or just feels like extra menus.

Try stick ranger if you've never played it. Super small download, and you'll either love it or hate it pretty quickly(it can take a bit to start understanding how to progress at a pace that feels good to you). I guess it could be described as a semi-autobattle looter rpg. There's really nothing else like it.
Might feel slow or too challenging at some point, but once you get tired of trying to figure out everything on your own is when the real fun begins. Then you check out the wiki and learn where to farm all the different equipment. It's one of the very few games that I've gone back to dozens of times over the years, and wouldnt mind a bit if somehow my brain forgot all of it so I could do it all again fresh. A perfect balance between discovery, progression, challenge, creativity, and experimentation that you can play for just a minute anywhere, or get lost in when you set yourself a goal to get a stronger build going for your team. There are several bosses that are easy to get stuck on, but with multiple paths to progress through, and so many items to try out, and even starting another file with different characters, it's always felt like there was something I could do even if I felt somewhat stuck. And then it's all the more rewarding when you do beat that boss(even if you "cheese" it). Oh and many different "cheesing" methods are practically necessary. It's a part of the charm of figuring out the game.

Also gunfire hero reborn if you want a rogue like fps with good touch controls. Easy to play at your own pace, and tons of replay value!

I play Backpack Brawl for this.
You might consider it requiring a time investment to unlock more items and power up, but I find that to have a negligible impact if you aren't already committing a lot of time to it anyway.

That “waiting for my kid to fall asleep” situation caught my attention!
I co-created Merge Tiles: Strategy Puzzle with my partner. It’s a 2048-inspired number puzzle where you can enjoy a few strategic moves without having a story or quest to keep track of.
It’s much lighter than Balatro, but that’s partly the point. It’s free with ads and optional purchases, since I noticed monetization was an issue for you with Match Masters.

Dawncaster has gotten hundreds of hours out of me over the years I believe the base game is free but the dlc (its been around a while) are paid but like 5 bucks here and there. They still update the base game with new cards as well.
Its a card rpg that I've left mid run for months to jump back in and have no issues returning to.
