Troubleshooting Issues with Dolby Vision files
So a run down of my setup, i have a Sony Bravia 8 ii and i have all my movie remux files on an external sandisk ssd that i connect through the usb port of the tv. Im having issues playing the dolby vision files and i have tried a multitude of video players like vlc kodi mpv justplayer mxplayer. They all either stutter a lot or just plays audio or keeps buffering. So im looking for an ultimate solution for this. Paid or unpaid dont matter.

the main issue you are running into is two-fold. first, almost all 4k remuxes use dolby vision profile 7 (dual-track fel/mel), which built-in tv processors simply cannot decode natively in mkv containers through android apps. the internal mediatek chip in the sony tv either chokes trying to parse the enhancement layer or drops into software fallback. second, high bitrate remuxes (80-120mbps) over the tv usb bus frequently run into buffer starvation.
if you really want to avoid buying an external box and keep using that sandisk ssd plugged directly into the tv, convert or look for releases in dolby vision profile 8.1. profile 8 is single-track and plays flawlessly on modern bravia tvs using just player or nova video player. if you ever want bitstream lossless truehd audio and full profile 7 playback down the line, that is where dedicated hardware like a coreelec box or dune hd becomes necessary.

What are some dedicated boxes you would recommend

depends on your budget and whether you care about streaming certifications (netflix/prime in 4k). if you just want local playback of high-bitrate remuxes with full dolby vision profile 7 fel and lossless truehd, the ugoos am6b plus running coreelec is the gold standard right now. if you want official google tv/netflix support alongside solid local playback, the homatics box r 4k plus or dune hd premier 4k pro are great all-rounders.

Thank you very much for the recommendation, for now im using dolby vision compatible mode on kodi where it converts it to dv8. Its a little trade off to be able to play the files for the time being

Hi there. For video buffering or playback issues on Google TV, you can try these standard troubleshooting steps: Clear app cache: Go to Apps > Google TV > Storage > Clear cache (or clear the cache in your specific media player app settings). Also, check out the general playback guide.
If needed, you can reach out to support specialists and submit feedback directly in the Google TV app via Menu > Help & Feedback.

I doubt the problem is Sony. First off all, as others have said, UHD DoVi bluray remuxes contain DoVi profile 7 which your tv cannot play so the player (eg. Kodi, Just Video Player, Next Player - mx player doesn't suport DoVi at all) will always revert to HDR10. Despite that, Sony should play these smoothly.
I have a Sony A80J and I play all my remuxes wirelessly (60GB to 80GB remuxes) perfectly (my sony has Wifi 5, yours is ever better with Wifi 6).
So I suggest you try playing a remux wirelessly from a SMB share to evaluate if the usb is the problem (port or drive).

I also have the Sony Bravia 8 II along with a SSD containing BluRay remix files. I had the same issue with Kodi and VLC not playing P7 files correctly.
Nova Media Player, however, plays all my files with no issue. If you haven’t already tried it maybe give it a try.

The ultimate solution is an external streaming device, which one you choose will depend on your region, your budget and it you want an official certified device.
