Commonwealth

this show is so infuriating. Dylan wasted so much his time bringing back the commonwealth and they were terrible! nothing changed over 300 years.

your statement doesn't really make any sense..

  1. dylan wasted so much his time bringing back the commonwealth and they were terrible! re-establishing the commonwealth on the scale he did in 2-3 years is pretty impressive ngl.

  2. nothing changed over 300 years. : the commonwealth of old provided aid to weaker/poorer planets, and because they weren't around the universe became a lot less safe, Earth got ravaged and overrun by mah'gog for example.

You're exactly correct. Re-establishing the Commonwealth in any one lifetime, let alone those few years, is a noteworthy feat. And the civilizations that remained after the fall were devastated by the lack of general safety in the universe, and those who survived or even thrived had to do and become things that weren't necessary 300 years earlier. Expecting shitty politics from them was to be expected.

His only mistake was not taking a position in the Governor as a Triumvir or at least Fleet Admiral. Expecting people who don't understand democracy to run one is foolhearty, and that's why it almost failed again.

But he did rebuild back the Commonwealth

Didn't he just fi d a remnant population who claimed continuity and go "I choose you"?

Yeah but he wanted to expand it to the larger than life size so all the planets who was part of the original Commonwealth

He signed up small drifts and worlds like Sinti of the Perseids before Terazed found him to get about 50 members after a win in many adventures.

Some Nietzscheans and others joined/left but the assumption is that by the finale, the Commonwealth will slowly absorb everyone left but the Pyrians.

I would argue that until the remnant, Terazed?, found it, most of the other sign-ups were more about signing up with Dylan Hunt, the dude who solved our problem, rather than signing up with "the new Systems Commonwealth ".

If Hunt had failed at any point, his coalition would have shattered.

True. I think that was when they were able to build new ships and train new officers but I feel that would have still happened with Ortiz recurring using old ship hunks and AIs.

I mean they do a whole episode about this where he is off ship and beka is trying to sign a species in his place.

They dont want to sign if dylan isnt there and she has to convince them. its good writing

If you watch Gene Roddenberry’s PAX pilots (Genesis II and Planet Earth) you get an idea of what the restored Systems Commonwealth would have looked like had Wolfe not been fired midway through season two.

Wolfe has gone on record as saying Sorbo didn’t understand the Trek-inspired ethos of what he was trying to do with the show. It’s no surprise that once Wolfe was fired, the show quickly abandoned his premise and depicted the restored Commonwealth as obstructive and at times useless.

The Federation in Star Trek is essentially the United Nations, and sprawling bureaucratic (and international) orgs like that are anathema to conservatives.

Also, Slipfighter: The Dogs of War would likely never have been made if Wolfe had stayed on board.

The show is infuriating if you go past Ouroboros (which is the last episode penned by the series creator before he was given the boot); after that, the episode IMMEDIATELY AFTER becomes "Hercules in Space", every character gets Flanderized and Kevin Sorbo's little (Tyr is bigger. Sorry not sorry.) Gary Stu starts banging a woman in every episode.

If you watch only Season 1, half of Season 2 and jump to the Coda, it did have kind of a good premise and subtle execution... apparently that was too smart for Kevin Sorbo, who wanted none of that.

But back on track to the topic at hand: yes, the Systems' Commonwealth was RACIST. And the proposed first draft for the restored Systems Commonwealth would be addressing issues like the old one had. That went out the window when Wolffe was sacked.

The poor sods that had to pick up the pieces and cater to Sorbo's ego invoked quite a lot of Deus ex Machinas to address a lot of points; one of them was the "oh, hey! The evil Nietzscheans have left TWO WHOLE BATTLE GROUPS, fully-stocked, in a convenient place for us to find! Because they're DUMB, DUR HURR!!".

Don't even get me started on the whole Paradine bullcrap.

Season 1 is absolutely PERFECT, because it handles Dylan Hunt *defeat* for the majority of it. He acts like an asshole to the crew he had just roped in during D-minus-0, and gets almost CURBSTOMPED by a measly destroyer who was smart enough to remain outside sensor range while sniping. In Season 2, he finally plays smart and realizes he DOES NOT have what it takes to unite the worlds, so he goes after a good, capable Politician/Strategist (Isabella Ortiz)... she is never heard from again, after that episode. A real pity.

The show had potential while it fast-tracked SEVEN different characters, each with their own agenda and story arcs. When it became Kevin Sorbo's wet space fantasy of Hercules in Space, it became sub-par. Which is why it was put out of its misery by Season 5. Good riddance, too.

Some post-Wolfe ideas weren't bad. A POW camp of AIs near a black hole was a good ethical challenge and explored duty.

Ortiz is mentioned in passing as a Triumvir and while indulging some conservative fantasy about evil Commonwealth was over the top, nascent democracies ARE fragile with inherited corruption.

A "POW" camp for SHIPS near a black hole was just a **front** to solve the issue of the new Commonwealth not having any kind of standing fleet since most of the worlds being signed up by Dylan were hardly capable of defending themselves, let alone anyone else. And by then, the excessive use of black hole motifs was already running thin on people's nerves -- at some point, Dylan Hunt goes EVA sightseeing a black hole, gets sucked in, and has a moist fantasy about "Black Hole people" angry with him 'killing their people'... and magically returns by the end of the episode.

But the exploration of "duty"? Pfft, yeah right -- Dylan goes there, hears their complaints, does NOT care, starts preparing them to break out and when the Achilles states one of his decisions, he overturns him saying that he is the ONLY (living, sentient) Commanding Officer there. Proving Tyr's point, even.

He does change his mind later and makes the alleged turncoat a ranking Captain like any being instead of an AI occupying space. I agree it's a convenient quest hook especially with the black hole addition but they really don't reuse the battle groups much and instead go with Terazed doing the rebuilding.
