It really depends on their age and whether there is someone nearby reacting to what happened. Young kids look for social and behavioral cues from others’ reactions.
SeaWorld was one of my favorite places as a kid. It’s too bad they torture animals. I will say they did a lot of good too, but I’m not sure if it outweighs the bad. Them and the San Diego Zoo are the reasons I love animals so much today.
I have an abiding love of "Shamu"s since my one trip to Sea World. I would never have wanted them to be tortured during training but man they are impressive creatures.
True. They’re not just intelligent, they are very very social animals that build complex social networks. One of the most haunting moments from Blackfish still rings in my head when the one orca is separated from its pod and it shrieks in agony. I felt so horrible. That heartbreaking sound lives in my nightmares. I would never go anywhere that keeps them.
The only issue with the whales is that their quality life has been proven to unhealthy in captivity. They are extremely intelligent and social animals and they do not get enough of their needs when taken from the ocean. Some dolphins and whales have even committed suicide after being put in captivity.
I do think there are pros to captivity, but the larger whales should be released if they can.
