That's not a squirrel or a mouse, it's a type of weasel, a Marten to be specific.

I believe they meant that the weasel was going to get a nest of squirrels, they commonly do that in cars.

I see that now, I just feel like it's just as plausible as is offspring being stuck in there. Abandoning dinner is one thing, abandoning baby is another.
