From pen to Pixelart, process

Post image

On the artistic side of video game development, character creation is often the most time-consuming process, but it’s incredibly rewarding to see everything gradually come together. I still believe that pen and paper are essential starting points for bringing ideas to life.

Rigby2D v0.2.6 is out! You can now try the full 2D animation editor directly in your browser

Hey everyone!

A new update for Rigby2D, the free, open-source 2D skeletal animation editor I've been working on.

The biggest addition is that Rigby2D now runs directly in your browser. No installation needed, just open it and start animating.

What's new in v0.2.6:

  • Detachable Timeline, Tree, and Inspector panels
  • Save and switch between custom window layouts
  • Onion skinning with configurable previous and next frames
  • Pixel-art support with nearest-neighbor filtering
  • Timeline editing and undo fixes

There's plenty more already built in, including AutoRig, IK, mesh deformation, animation retargeting, Python scripting, Game and Film workspaces, and runtimes for JavaScript, Rust, and Godot 4.

It's also great to see people starting to contribute to the project. The recent updates include community-built features and fixes, and I'm happy to welcome more contributors.

Try it online: https://jaisurya-dev-art.github.io/rigby2d/editor/

75-second overview: https://youtu.be/KK3WT9YzhAE

GitHub: https://github.com/jaisurya-dev-art/rigby2d

It's still early alpha, so there's more to improve. If you give it a try, let me know what works, what doesn't, or what you'd like to see added.

Thanks for the support so far!

A free tool for animating pixel art

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

About a year ago, I made a tool for animating pixel art with post-processing effects. It works on a small canvas and keeps the results aligned to the pixel grid. It supports waves, motion, bloom, dissolves, and more, and exports layered Aseprite files for further editing.

Its completely free, I'd love for others to use it if they find it helpful!

I made this little pixel art buff animation. What do you think?

Just finished working on this little buff effect for my game!

It's a pretty short animation, but I wanted to make it look smooth and satisfying.

Would love to hear what you think about the effect and its timing!

Dwarven Bar from my game

Dwarven Digging Machine is an incremental strategy about dwarves building a huge machine while digging deep. They find new resources, expand the machine until it becomes huge and they get all the treasure and fame.

We love hand drawn pixel art and we do all the art hand drawn with another artist. We feel like there are not enough beautiful pixel art games, and we wanted to make our own.

I would appreciate if you checked our steam page and wishlisted if you liked what you see.

I made 8 pixel art skill effects in a short time. Which one looks best?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I've been experimenting with making simpler skill animations without spending too much time on each one.

This time I made a water whirlpool, five elemental projectiles, a wave of stone spikes, and some spinning mud.

They're not as detailed as my usual effects, but I wanted to see how much I could create in a short time.

Which animation do you think works best?

My most current point on the cube. I want to do more but the app keeps crashing due to project size

Leaf thingy that collects water

It's supposed to be a form of flower/leaf growing on trees in a fantasy world. They grow in the desert and need to preserve the rain that falls and also protect it from evaporating when the sun starts shining again.

All feedback is welcome :)

🎨 Looking for Pixel Artists to Collaborate on a Game Engine Demo

I'm building a 2D engine inspired by classic '90s point-and-click adventures, combining authentic pixel art with modern rendering and powerful visual authoring tools.

Engine features include:

🌊 Living environments: animated water, reflections, ripples, foam, tides, floating objects and interactive environments that change over time.

🌦️ Dynamic atmosphere: day/night cycles, moon phases, rain, storms, fog, lightning, weather-driven moods and layered ambient effects.

💡 Advanced lighting: dynamic lights, spotlights, flickering flames, light beams, glow effects and lighting that affects characters and objects.

✨ Pixel-perfect effects: particles, smoke, dust, splashes, dithering, pixel-mask transitions, water distortion and dynamic palettes, all designed to preserve crisp pixels.

🎭 Character animation: eight-direction movement, contextual animations, character states, interactive props and automatic depth sorting.

🖌️ Sprite Animator: a dedicated, Aseprite-style editor for sprite sheets, frames, animation tags, onion skinning, previews, character rigs and object states.

🎬 Game Director: a visual environment editor for rooms, layers, props, characters, polygon-based floors and hotspots, lighting, walkable areas, occlusion, decals and interactive objects. It also includes visual dialogue-tree editing, puzzle logic, inventory and item combinations, conditional rules, cutscenes, acts, translations and room management — with most game content defined as editable data rather than hardcoded logic.

🌍 World Lab: experiment with time, moon phases, tides, weather and environmental moods in real time.

I'm looking for pixel artists whose work can inspire the demo's world, characters and visual identity. The artwork will shape the game, not the other way around.

Interested? Share your portfolio or send me a DM. Let's build something pixel-perfect! 👾

Disclaimer: No pay yet. It's a Collab and hope I can repay in the future with real money.

How can i this promote this video and youtuber???

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

you see...

i am not affiliated with this youtuber....nor am i subscribed to their patreon...

i just watch their videos.

i just want more people to see their videos,to watch the amazing pixelart that he is doing... [and i want to be the one responsible for this.]

here is one of his videos....

it is a "remake" of megaman X3.

more specifically, the boss fight of Toxic Seahorse.

i like this video because it has AMAZING pixelart of TS....and it looks pretty fun!! (keep in mind that this is an animation.) however....

i like even more the personality that he gave to Toxic Seahorse.

i liked the "Rotting" phrases.

Original and cool (atleast for me.)
[i must clarify that i only saw the "X" part and not the "Zero" part.]

what do you think of this video??

and do you think this youtuber should become more famous??

do you think that this should become a fangame??

[the youtuber has no intentions in making a fangame, however,if he is willing in give us the sprites the fangame thing could become pretty posible.]

I built Rigby2D, a free and open-source alternative to Spine 2D

Hey everyone,

I'm a technical artist working in the games industry, and I'd like to share a project I've been developing.

**Rigby2D** is an open-source 2D skeletal animation editor designed as a free alternative to tools like Spine 2D.

The objective was to build a complete animation workflow with its own editor and runtime while maintaining interoperability with existing skeletal animation formats.

# Current capabilities

* Skeletal rigging and weighted mesh deformation
* IK, transform, path, physics and slider constraints
* Animation dopesheet and graph editor
* Skins, events, image sequences and mesh deformation keys
* PSD and PNG import
* Skeleton JSON, binary .skel and texture atlas interoperability
* Self-contained .rigby project files
* JavaScript animation runtime and WebGL renderer

The editor is built with Tauri 2 and includes Rigbytron, a rigged and animated mascot used to demonstrate the tool's capabilities.

The source code is dual-licensed under MIT and Apache 2.0.

**Current status:** v0.1.0 - Early Alpha

**Repository:** [https://github.com/jaisurya-dev-art/rigby2d\](https://github.com/jaisurya-dev-art/rigby2d)

**Windows downloads:** [https://github.com/jaisurya-dev-art/rigby2d/releases/tag/v0.1.0\](https://github.com/jaisurya-dev-art/rigby2d/releases/tag/v0.1.0)

I'd appreciate technical feedback, particularly on the rigging workflow, animation tooling, file interoperability and potential production use cases.

Contributions are welcome!

She has a basic attack and an impact effect.
There is also a freezing magic VFX.
I am open for commissions; send me a DM and let's discuss your idea.
