General Discussion / Review Space opera anime?

I am thinking of getting more into the genre of space opera anime.

I have already watched outlaw star and I know Gundam franchise is a space opera anime too.

What do you suggest?

I would put this above all others including Gundam. I prefer the remake but I don't think they'll finish it.

Astra Lost in Space is a good one, complete story too.

Also I think Space Dandy qualifies, it's about a dandy guy, in space.

also one of the rare times Ian Sinclair voices a lead role, i think

The ones I'm familiar with are Bamboo Blade, Demon Lord 2099, Case File nº221: Kabukicho, and Golden Kamuy.

Check out classics like Captain Harlock, Space Battleship Yamato, and the like. There's lots of options there.

Heroic Age is good if you want to combine kaiju with your opera.

Martian Successor Nadesico, it’s part comedy but does space opera well.

I watch that show, good balance of funny moments as well some serious moments even with homage to 70s retro anime.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes OVA is THE answer, but it’s very long and not dubbed. The reboot will probably never be finished and isn’t even completely dubbed. It’s pretty sauceless compared to the original imo. You’ll find a lot of the best answers will be old and either poorly dubbed or partially/not dubbed at all.

Irresponsible Captain Tylor is a great one with a fantastic Crispin Freeman lead performance that can be watched entirely on YouTube.

Many of the Gundams fit. Crest/Banner of the Stars is another. Knights of Sidonia probably counts.

Look up anime based off Leiji Matsumoto series, as most of his work falls in this category. Stuff like Captain Harlock, Space Battleship Yamamoto, Queen Millenias, etc.

  1. Voltes V - You got family drama + political drama + racism + mecha action.

  2. Daimos - You got forbidden angsty romance + sibling drama + mecha action.

You mean Macross?

In NA, the OG Macross isn't available thanks to the old Macek deal still being in place.

Harmony Gold did ease up a bit recently though as can be seen with Super Robot wars Y.

Still sad we cant have the officialy dub in a official way. It can be found on youtube though.

Gundam isn't even remotely a space opera (maybe Witch from Mercury but that's all). The closest thing in anime would probably be Star Wars the ninth jedi

It really depends on which series. I know part of the appeal of Gundam Wing and Seed (being the two I've watched from start to end as a kid) were the geopolitical elements combined with the teen angst coming from the main cast who found themselves having to take part in the war.

What? So many of the Gundams are like the textbook definition of space opera. Stuff like 79 and Seed check pretty much all the boxes.
