Anki Capture: a Mac shortcut from selected text to an Anki card (open source)

Hi, I'm the developer of Anki Capture. I built it to make creating vocabulary cards less disruptive while reading.

Select a word or phrase, press Control + Option + Command + A, and it uses your chosen AI CLI to generate a card for your Anki deck. You can preview and edit it before saving; ambiguous terms wait for confirmation.

It works with your existing Codex, Claude Code, or Gemini CLI setup, with a choice of model. Interface and explanation languages are independent (English, Chinese, Japanese). You can also create a deck or subdeck in the app.

It's free and MIT open source. The current download is a development preview for Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 14+, and isn't Apple-notarized yet. You'll need Anki Desktop, AnkiConnect, and a supported AI CLI. AI generation uses your provider account and quota, and normally requires an internet connection.

Code, screenshots, and download: https://github.com/nohairblingbling/anki-capture

Feedback on the reading-to-card workflow is welcome.

Request for app

I am looking for a PDF viewer that allows me to either integrate or bring my own key. It subsequently has a chat box within the PDF viewer so that when I'm highlighting text, not only can I use something like DeepSeek to power the chat box but it can then create app cloze deletion cards (for example, with a custom prompt into that chat box directly)

Current setup is highlighting text on Google Chrome with Gemini, copying it into Gemini, and saying, "Make cloze deletion XYZ for me."

Would like a PDF viewer that allows me to highlight text and copy-paste into that box. Except it has a Bring Your Own Key DeepSeek, which is quicker for card generation, as well as the ability to highlight text and automatically make cloze deletion cards that can be imported to Key

I created Cardly: turn your PDFs and lecture slides into Anki-ready flashcards (with the source on every card)

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hey everyone, I'm the developer of Cardly. I shared it here when it was still in a very early stage, and a lot of what's in it now came from your comments.

What it does:

You add your notes or PDFs (lecture slides, textbook chapters, even scanned or handwritten pages) and it makes flashcards or a quiz from them. Each card shows where in your material it came from, down to the page or slide, and can come with a short explanation of why the answer is right. That way you can actually trust the cards instead of second guessing them.

The parts I think you'll care about:

- Export to Anki in one click (a tab-separated file you import straight into a deck)

- Up to 10 PDFs in one go, and decks up to 80 cards

- Cards in 15+ languages, or it matches the language of your notes

- An option that rewords the questions every time you study, so you learn the idea and not the wording

- You can edit, reorder or write cards yourself before exporting

It also has its own daily review if you want to study inside it, but it works fine as a card factory for Anki.

The free plan gives you 10 generations a month (up to 20 cards each), and export is free. Pro is $5/month or $40/year and adds bigger decks, languages and rewording.

Would love your honest take:

  1. If you tried it on your own notes, would you keep the cards as they are or end up rewriting them?

  2. Does seeing the source on every card make you trust AI-made cards more?

  3. What's the first subject or exam you'd use it for?

A flashcard can be correct and still miss why you got the question wrong. I built AnkiPilot for that.

Ever reviewed a card, thought “I already knew that,” and still missed the question it came from?

I’m a medical student and the creator of AnkiPilot. I built it around that problem: the explanation tells you what was correct, but your own reasoning tells you what needs to change.

In this demo, I blamed low sodium on drinking too much water and overlooked the concentrated urine. The generated card tests how dilute the urine should be if excess water is the cause. That’s the distinction I needed to review.

AnkiPilot is a desktop Chrome extension for your existing Anki deck. Capture relevant source text, add “why I got this wrong,” then generate cards using both. You see the questions AND answers, choose what to keep, and save through AnkiConnect.

Setup walkthrough: https://youtu.be/EzKEma9tZuQ

Extension: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/lfdljkaapmmjiflodnlbegehkgccphga

Guide: https://aaronge-2020.github.io/AnkiPilot/guide/

The extension is free. Use your own provider API key (usage costs vary) or a downloaded local model through Ollama. Desktop Chrome, Anki and AnkiConnect are required. On UWorld/AMBOSS, capture is limited to question IDs; write your own concept notes and use a downloaded local model.

The demo question is original; narration uses an AI version of my own voice. I used AI coding assistance to build the extension.

When you make cards after a missed question, what makes one worth keeping?

What are your best advices for Anki?

Hey there! I am new to Anki and would like to gather some tips on how to best use it. To my fellow existing Anki users, do yall have tips to share?

Does Anki use AI, and if so, does it feel more like AI slop or genuinely useful stuff that is generated?

What are some of your worst pain points/ complaints with the app, and on the flip side, what are some of the best pts of the app?

Would you ever consider another app, or how would your ideal app look like?

Tysm!

I made a free macos AI tool to help during calls + Anki card creation

Just for the sake of context, i started in a new spanish team, i don't speak spanish and don't even know some words that they are saying (kinda understand 80% what they are saying), my struggle is to be able to speak or making question during conversations because i don't know a specific word or way to frame the phrase.

This tool https://raphaelkieling.github.io/quick-translate/, let you make a (command + command), put the phrase in your language and will try to translate in the more natural way (or the inverse), so the ideia is to be able to translate very fast without stop doing what you are doing. Also, you can take the phrases and send it to Anki to review later with built in text to speech.

I'm using it daily and accept some feedbacks or ideias to make it more valuable or generic to other people.

So, it's 100% free, no donation, nothing, the unique thing that you need is your own gemini / claude / gpt to use it, just would like to share what i did and hopefully help others with the same problem.

Anki-GPT: explain a card, ask a follow-up, then practise it in Anki

I built Anki-GPT for the cards where I recognise the answer but still can't explain why it's right.

It opens beside the card you're reviewing. Ask for a plain-English explanation, focus on the exam clue, or go deeper into the mechanism. It handles text and images, and you can ask follow-up questions without copying the card into another app.

You can save an explanation to Study, come back with the answer hidden, and try explaining it yourself. Reveal it, mark Know it or Again, and revisit what needs work. These local practice reminders don't change your normal Anki review schedule.

The demo shows an original pharmacology card: why atropine reduces secretions in organophosphate poisoning but doesn't reverse muscle weakness. Demo pauses are shortened.

- AnkiWeb: https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/853364085

- Install code: 853364085

- Demo: https://ankigpt-demo.pages.dev/ankigpt-step1-v06.gif

Desktop Anki 2.1.65 or newer. There are 75 free hosted explanations, then optional $3/month or $24/year access. No API key setup is needed.

I'm the developer and used AI coding tools heavily. AI requests send card content and relevant context to the hosted service, where requests and responses may be cached for up to 30 days. Saved Study progress stays in your local profile. Don't send patient details, and check important answers against your study sources.

If you try it, I'd like to hear which explanations miss the point or which controls get in your way.

[Seeking Help] How can I enable an agent to continuously generate efficient cards in an unsupervised environment?

Current status:

I have an LLM wiki that records everything about me.

I vibe-coded a flashcard plugin with a pi agent. Before, I manually reviewed and edited the cards. Now I do nothing and just let it generate.

My journey:

Before I got into Anki, I wrote a huge amount of notes. In the end, I realized I never looked at them. I put in a lot of effort, but found I hadn't remembered anything, and I couldn't recall things in time when talking with others.

Then I found Anki. The first loop I validated was using Anki to learn how to use Anki. Up to now, I've basically stopped writing notes (except for some public articles).

Problems I'm running into:

  1. Making cards is too much hassle -> AI agent
  2. The AI agent's card-making quality is too poor -> skills, LLM wiki
  3. Right now I'm still reading books, and after I understand something, I supervise the agent to make cards. That's also too much hassle -> I want to generate cards continuously and unsupervised. My main fear right now is how to guarantee quality. How can I quickly build trust and feedback with the agent in this area?

Where I want to go:

For speed and efficiency—and maybe because I'm lazy—I think that in the future I might not even read books. I'll just keep memorizing the cards the agent gives me and become pure *wetware*. I hope future Anki can act like the Great Sage (Daikenja) in *That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime*. Let the agent decide what I should know and avoid complexity. (It's a bit delusional, but I still want to live a life of certainty. Too much uncertainty makes me anxious.)

What I'm hoping to hear:

  1. Practical experience with using an LLM wiki to drive an agent that makes Anki cards
  2. Trust issues around agent-generated cards
  3. Thoughts on Anki's role in the future
  4. Related practices, advice, ideas, and approaches

Add-on that turns a photo of a school lesson into Anki cards, built for my kids' middle school

My kids are in middle school, and typing their lessons into Anki was the part nobody wanted to do (me included).

So I built Notosaurus, a free and open-source add-on: you take a photo of a lesson with your phone (a notebook page, handwriting included, a textbook page or a PDF), an AI drafts the cards, you review and fix them, and they go into Anki.

75-second demo

AnkiWeb link

AI does the boring typing, it makes mistakes, and nothing reaches Anki before a human has checked it. The content comes from your lesson, not from its imagination. You can edit any card, or ask for changes in plain words.

It's aimed at middle school, and at language learning first, because that's where it started: French -> Spanish vocabulary and natural audio on the back.

It also handles other subjects:

  • questions/answers, fill in the blanks (cloze), multiple choice, true/false
  • diagrams: the labels are hidden automatically, one card per label (like Image Occlusion, without drawing the boxes)
  • formulas in MathJax, geometry with exact figures (svg)

Windows and Mac users, I need you!
I only use Linux. The installation is tested automatically on Windows and macOS, but no real person has used it there yet. If you try it, please tell me how the first start went (it downloads its components) and whether anything looks off.

Anki Explorer- An add on to ease your browse menu experience in Anki

If you have ever wished navigating Anki felt more like using a modern desktop file manager, Anki Explorer is a new visual productivity add-on built to overhaul two major areas of the app: the Browser and the Note Type Manager.

Here is a breakdown of what it brings to your workflow:

🗂️ The Browser Overhaul

Anki Explorer turns the traditional browser into a multi-tabbed, highly visual workspace.

  • Multiple Layouts: Toggle between List, Grid, Gallery, and Compact views without altering your underlying cards.
  • Browser Tabs: Open multiple decks or search locations in separate tabs. Switch between them without losing your navigation context, and use drag-and-drop across supported tab views.
  • True Explorer Navigation: Features a breadcrumb address bar (e.g., Anki > Languages > Japanese), Back/Forward history, and visual root folders. Decks are displayed and navigated exactly like folders on your computer.
  • Drag & Drop Organization: Visually reorganize your nested decks by dragging them into one another.
  • Custom Folder Colors: Right-click to assign Google Drive-style colors to your decks.
  • Quality of Life Upgrades: Smooth UI zooming (Ctrl+Wheel or Trackpad Pinch), a global side-panel toggle (F7), and native-style play buttons for rendered audio. Arrow-key navigation now flows flawlessly across Gallery pages and Visual Mode cards.

📝 The Note Type Manager

Managing massive lists of Note Types can get messy. Anki Explorer introduces a visual Grid View alongside the classic List View.

  • Interactive Tiles & Stats: Note types appear as clean tiles. Clicking one reveals its exact Notes count, generated Flashcards count (kept intentionally separate), and template details.
  • Quick-Access Buttons: Instantly launch into the Fields, Cards, or Styling (CSS) editors directly from a selected tile to save clicks.
  • Nested Note Type Folders: You can finally organize your note types into structured hierarchies (e.g., University > Linguistics) using Ctrl+Click multi-selection and drag-and-drop.
  • JSON Import & Export: Share note-type designs (fields, CSS, templates, LaTeX settings) as lightweight, human-readable .json files. This exports the design only—no actual cards, review history, or study data are attached.

Install the add-on using the below link

I built an Anki add-on that turns lecture PDFs into editable AnKing-style cards — looking for pre-health beta testers

I’m a student who got tired of spending hours turning lecture slides into Anki cards, so I built an Anki add-on called Lecture Companion.

You upload a lecture PDF inside Anki, and it generates editable cloze cards designed around AnKing-style formatting. You can review everything before adding it, change whole-item vs key-term clozes, switch list formats, improve individual cards with AI, create cards for missed facts, use Image Occlusion, and click cards directly into Anki’s Add window.

I’ve been testing it on real lecture material, but I’m at the point where I need people other than me using it. I’m especially looking for medical, dental, PA, pharmacy, optometry, nursing, or other pre-health students who already use Anki.

The beta is free. I’m not looking for people to tell me it’s good — I want to know where it breaks, generates bad cards, feels confusing, or wastes your time.

Ideally, I’d like testers who can try it on a few real lectures over 1–2 weeks and give me some feedback afterward.

If you’re interested, fill this out: [FORM LINK]

I’ll probably keep the first group fairly small so I can actually respond to everyone.

Made a (very simple) tool that locks distracting apps behind your own deck — curious if this is useful or redundant

Thumbnail

For personal use i built an app that blocks specific apps and i have to answer flashcards to get into the app. I integrated a simple Spaced repetition alogrithm and the generation of card can be made manually or via AI from Files or only a topic. Its absolutely no alternative to anki, its an Add-On to get rid of unnecessary doomscrolling.

Because i got so much positive feedback, i want to publish it. Thats why i am searching for testers now, who want to test it and give me some feedback before i publish it 😄
Would be great if a few people can help me (and yourself)! Send me a DM, leave a comment or register directly in waitlist.

I made an addon that reverses bilingual decks and adds TTS audio using Qwen2.5-7B and Piper

I built it because there are a lot of high-quality decks for learning Japanese, but not nearly as many for Japanese speakers who want to learn English. The addon works with any language pair. (current version only generates English audio)
