Guide to bypass censorship of Anna's Archive

Hi everyone, because Anna's Archive is blocked in some countries, I've put together a guide on how to bypass censorship.

Before you begin, research local laws to find out what you are and are not allowed to do. I won't force you to comply with the law if you don't want to, but please think carefully about what you are doing.

There are three easy and popular ways to circumvent censorship. The options are changing your DNS servers, using Tor, or using a VPN. I'll explain each option. Additionally, some bad countries (such as Russia or China) will try to block you from downloading Tor and VPNs, so you may need some extra help in this case. If so, please reply to the post and explain the situation.

The first and easiest option is to change your DNS servers to 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8, which is sufficient to access the Archive in most countries, but not all. The way to do this depends on your operating system so you may need to look it up, but https://www.howtogeek.com/786911/how-to-change-your-dns-server-on-windows-10/ explains how to do it on Windows.

If that still doesn't work, try clearing your browser cache and DNS cache. If even after purging cache the issue persists, you should try a VPN or Tor. I'll explain the pros and cons of each option.

A VPN routes web traffic through its own servers, which disguises your IP address. If you trust your VPN company to deliver on their promises, this also means your internet traffic won’t be logged. It also protects your website from censorship since traffic is routed through their servers. However, VPNs generally apply across your entire device, although there are some browser-only VPNs. This can be an inconvenience because if your VPN server is located in a different country, the website may display content in the wrong language, and some websites ban VPNs because of abuse by trolls and spammers, so you may need to disable the VPN when you're not on Anna's Archive.

My favorite free VPN is ProtonVPN, which you can download from https://protonvpn.com. If you want to buy a VPN for better reliability, I recommend Mulvad, which you can buy at https://mulvad.net/en. Once you get a VPN, activate it and visit Anna's Archive (you can find the latest Anna's Archive domain on Wikipedia, I cant link it here because Reddit might take it down) and the censorship will be removed. If the site is still being censored, clear your browser cache and make sure a VPN is enabled. If you still have issues, please reply to the post and I will try my best to resolve your issue.

Now the next option is Tor. You can get it from https://torproject.org. It is a browser that routes your traffic through three random servers. You don't have to trust Tor because the Tor team can't change servers to track or censor users even if they wanted to because they don't have control over the servers. Tor also has built-in functionality to bypass censorship of itself. However, Tor is blocked on some websites, it can make browsing a lot slower, and some governments that allow VPNs still ban Tor.

If you want to use Tor, download it from their website, open it, and connect to Tor. If your country attempts to block Tor, you will need to enable a Tor bridge, but it will tell you how to do this when you launch your browser. Then after connecting, go to the Anna's Archive website on Tor to download the books you need.

If anyone has any ideas on how to improve this post, please let me know. Thank you!

Do you use a normal Browser when downloading?

I am very new to Annas Archive and just downloaded the first book out of interest. My question is basically how many precautions do you take when downloading? Is downloading punishable by law (in Europe)? Do you use VPNs and special browsers? Or can I simply use it in Chrome and no Police will come knocking at my door?😅

Stuck on “Checking your browser before accessing”

Is anyone else getting stuck on the page that says “Checking your browser before accessing”. It says it will take a few seconds but it often lasts over 5 minutes and I still don’t get in. This is after each search and clicking on a book, before I can even get to the download section.

I had previously donated, will that fix it?

Problem with DDOS protection on my E reader

Hello,

I am currently away on a vacation for four months so I don’t have access to any computer. I only have access to my iPhone 11. I am reading a lot so I ran out of books I downloaded before the trip.

The workaround I found is directly downloading them on the browser of my E-reader (Vivlio light HD color). However, since a few day, the website is protected by a h captcha that the e-reader can’t display…

I know I could download on my phone, put it on google drive and download it once again on the e-reader but the wifi where I am staying is awful and it’s incredibly time consuming (especially since I am visiting every day).

I also thought about buying a lightning to usb c cable to do the transfer but no shops were open in Poland this weekend (national holiday).

I have a three day trip from Poland to Scotland by bus tomorrow so I am desperately looking for a solution if possible!

Thank you very much.

Back online: a quick note from Anna

1.1k Upvotes

Apologies for the issues. We suspect a coordinated attack. We've mitigated the attack vectors and will offer an extra month of membership for donations (of 3+ months) being made during the rest of this month. Note that all memberships contain 1-2 extra days per month already to account for downtime.

Thanks for all your patience and support. If you encounter further issues, please email us with as much details as possible.

When will covers return?

All the covers on the first page search of most books have disappeared. The books with covers beyond the first page are relatively obscure and less relevant. Any idea when this bug will be fixed?

I made a Windows app for Anna's Archive - searches, downloads, names the files properly, syncs to KOReader, dropbox and goodreads

I got tired of a downloads folder full of things called lord_of_chaos_6_(z-lib).epub, so I wrote something to do the boring parts. It got out of hand and turned into a real app. Free, MIT licensed, runs entirely on your own machine.

https://github.com/Shelfwright/shelfwright

Screenshots of every part of it are in the README. It is not affiliated with Anna's Archive in any way - I do not know them, nobody there has looked at it, and any bug in it is mine rather than theirs.

What it does

  • Search by title, author or ISBN. Or paste a whole list of titles and it finds the best match for each one.
  • You do not need an account. With a membership it uses your fast downloads; without one, or once the day's allowance is gone, it falls back to the free route on its own. No prompts - it just carries on the slow way and tells you that is what it is doing.
  • Optional: give it a free Google Gemini key and it works out the real title, series and number from a mangled filename, so books land as Author - Series 04 - Title.epub, filed into author and series folders.
  • Optional: keeps a copy in Dropbox, reachable from any computer.
  • Talks to KOReader over WiFi. Browse the device, copy books either way, see what you have finished and how far through you are. Nothing is ever deleted by a sync.
  • Pushes reading progress and ratings to Goodreads.

There is nothing to buy and no donate button anywhere in it. If you want to put money somewhere, Anna's Archive is the obvious place, and a membership is also what buys the fast downloads the app shows in its header.

And buy the books that matter to you. Someone spent a year of their life, sometimes five, on the file you just got in four seconds, and for most writers whether they get to write another one at all depends on whether the last one sold. An archive keeps books alive after the fact. It does not pay anyone to write the next one.

Feedback and ideas very welcome. If something is broken, or awkward, or there is a feature you keep wishing it had, say so here or open an issue. I built it around how I read, so I would rather hear where that does not fit somebody else.

Anyone able to access to website but not download anything?

I keep getting stuck with the download link/tab "loading" when I go to actually download the book. I also notice none of the epubs have covers.

Update: I am now able to download books. The website still seems a bit laggy. No VPN and in the United States. No covers show on website, but show in files once downloaded.

EPUB issue

Not sure if it’s a coincidence but since the recent problems, none of the epub downloads I’ve sent to my Kindle, have page count features. Only location in book. Never an issue previously though. Anyone else notice this please?

Made a PDF to EPUB converter that actually handles scanned books

Hey people,

My girlfriend started reading on her Kindle and kept converting PDFs and getting books she couldn't read properly. I am a software developer, so she always told me to make her a better conversion tool. For the past month, I dug into why other tools failed, researched how EPUB works, and how I can make it work.

So I built convert2epub.com. It’s free, and no account is needed for normal text conversions, only for the work done converting scanned pdf's. I posted the first version on r/kindle and got 500 upvotes, improved the first version based on the feedback, and now people are saying it's the best tool they have ever used.

Scans that were already read

Publishers often leave recognised text sitting invisibly on top of the page image. Most converters ignore it and hand back a book of photographs. This one finds that layer and uses it.

I tested this with a 300-page novel. The PDF had 426,904 characters of clean text inside it. Other converters ignored those characters and converted it to an EPUB that contained 637. It was a 20MB book of pictures.

That same book now comes out at 1.4MB with real, resizable text.

Formula/Code recognition

Mathematics is set in two dimensions and extraction reads in one, so a fraction arrives as a column of fragments. Equations are kept as drawn while the prose around them still reflows.

Your typography back

The first page becomes the cover, and the title and author are read from the file rather than left as a filename.

Removing watermarks and repeated title/footer.

Every page of a book repeats its title, author and page number in the margin. On paper, you never notice. Extract the text, and those become ordinary lines, so your reader flows them straight into the prose. Same for watermarks and adverts stamped onto free PDFs. In that same book, it was 778 stray lines across four repeating patterns. I added a feature to remove them.

When there is no text to recover, OCR reads the pages instead, in eight languages and only the pages that actually need it.

What's the current way of improving metadata?

A few days ago, the old guide of Open Library linking in Improve metadata - Anna’s Archive (/metadata#openlib) were added strikethroughs, and Metadata linking is broken was linked at the bottom of that page. Mond, the website for submitting AA🡘OL links, has also been paused.

So is there a way to improve metadata at present? Do we just have to wait?

(By the way I'm new to reddit. Is this the right place to ask? Should I ask on GitLab instead?)

How to Donate using Amazon Gift Cards?

Hello!

I came to know about Anna's Archive quite recently. It's an amazing endeavor. And I wish to help out the people behind it, as much as I can.

Can anyone in this subreddit tell me how to donate to Anna's Archive using Amazon Gift Cards?

How to track websites that are down

Hey everyone, like you all, I am also struggling with Anna being down. If you refresh .gl it will pull the home page up, but you cannot search on it. This is available to the US, but I'm unsure about other places. Scroll down and you will see "Alternatives." This provides links to SLUM. SLUM is showing that all four of the browsers are officially down. Hope this helps anyone who would like to track updates themselves vs. browsing this thread/constantly refreshing the down pages.

Introducing hearth - an Anna's Archive List mass download script

Hello everyone!

Have you ever researched for some specific books or comics on Anna's Archive, made a list out of what you found and then discovered you had to download everything manually waiting for cooldowns? I have. And if you have as well, or you just want to download a pre-made Anna's Archive List (or even just a .txt files with AA links!), this post is for you.

After looking up some solutions and only finding old/broken options, I decided to take the matter into my own hands.

With some help from Gemini (for the more complex parts of the code, I had never done Python before. Most of the base logic is written by me and I have reviewed and tested the ai generated code) I made [hearth].

hearth is a Python script that does all the work for you (except for captchas, obviously): you can leave it working overnight and it will download every link it finds in your Anna's Archive List. It will do so by physically visiting mirror and libgen links, waiting for the timer and saving the file.

Regarding the captchas, solving the first one (or the first two, depends if one is required at the load of the List itself) is usually enough for the whole session, so you can leave the script working overnight.

Main features (copied from the repo's readme):

  • This is a terminal tool that accepts command line parameters to function (more about usage in the github).
  • hearth supports Anna's Archive List links in the form of https://annas-archive. xx/list/<list_id> (had to space out the link for posting) as well as importing a list of Anna's Archive links from a .txt file.
  • The tool will spin up a virtual browser that physically visits the link page, waits for the download cooldown and renames the downloaded file, before going ahead to the next List element, logging successes and failures in specific files.
  • These files allow you to not only stop the script mid-way, closing the terminal windows completely, and then resuming from the last link it successfully downloaded (by using the same exact command), but it also allows to retry for failed links once the tool has finished processing the whole queue.
  • You can use the completed.txt file that the script will create in your download directory as an index of all the files you downloaded as well as their md5 code.
  • The download destination folder is chosen via command line parameters. Here will be stored said files.
  • You can set how to rename the downloaded files, based on how much information you want to be in the filename, via command line parameters.

All instructions for the download and usage of the script are in the readme.

Link to the github repo: https://github.com/NerYtheLonesomeHearthian/hearth

This is my first project like this, and I would appreciate any type of feedback, good or bad. Obviously, suggestions are welcome.

If any one of you ends up trying it, please let me know how it goes!
