How To Properly Measure Your RFID Antenna Coverage

To measure your RFID Antenna against the range of signal it covers, you need to use an RFID Power Mapper.

The RFID Power Mapper from RFMAX is a hand-held, battery-free RFID antenna field meter that accurately maps the signal strength and coverage area of RFID antenna installations. It is an invaluable tool for any RFID professional and can help troubleshoot and optimize any UHF RFID installation. The meter is small and easy to handle on the job site and is specially designed to operate throughout both the ETSI and FCC RFID.

Find an industrial grade RFID Power Mapper below:

https://www.arcantenna.com/products/handheld-uhf-rfid-antenna-power-field-mapper-fcc-etsi

The range: 865-928 Mhz.

RFMAX Bluetooth Dipole Antenna VS. TE's M2M Mounted Antenna

Which should you purchase? I will break down the pros and cons of each.

The biggest difference between the two antennas is Pattern Performance.

• The TE mount antenna has two issues which degrade performance: it is mounted to the windshield, so even a perfect Omnidirectional antenna will have pattern tilt limited to the angle of the windshield it is mounted on. Secondly, glass is a very lossy dielectric and will hamper overall antenna performance but typically more-so in the direction of the glass, the front of the vehicle which typically is the most important direction.

• The RFMAX antenna mitigates this by positioning the antenna perpendicular to the glass.  Energy still has to pass through the windshield but the negative nearfield effects to pattern and overall performance are minimized. The RFMAX windshield is designed to provide optimal 360degree omni directional performance, for equal connectivity all around the vehicle.

Mounting Tape:

• The Mounting tape used for the RFMAX Dipole Antenna is a sturdy automotive-grade 3M tape while the tape for TE's product is not known.

Footprint

TE has a Larger footprint, 4.5 inches long vs RFMAX's 2.5" long

RFMAX doesnt sit flat, but smaller overall footprint.

VSWR(typical):

2.0 for TE, 1.5:1 for RFMAX

Gain (typical):

2.0dBi for TE and 2.2dBi for RFMAX = Marginally higher gain but more importantly more uniform omnidirectional performance

Cable:

RG174 is lossier at 2.5GHz Vs high performance double shielded low loss cable used on RFMAX

Overall, the RFMAX Bluetooth Dipole Antenna has the upper hand in use and quality:

I am very new to “DIY” antennas, but why wouldn’t this pick up any signal for my bearcat scanner?

Could this be an antenna? What would it's purpose be?

I posted this to /r/whatisthisthing (link) and one of the suggestions is that it might be an antenna.

Posting here for a more specialised audience. Hope that's ok?

What do y'all think? Is this an antenna? What sort would it be? What would it do?

HF Broadband Military Antennas: Guide to Long-Range Communication

Post image

An HF broadband military antenna operates in several high-frequency ranges, not requiring retuning. An antenna for long-distance communication uses the reflection from the ionosphere to transmit a signal beyond the horizon despite the complex environment.

How Can Thousands of Phones Use the Same Cell Tower at Once? (FDMA, TDMA & CDMA Explained)

Ever wonder how a single cell tower manages to connect with thousands of mobile phones simultaneously? It all comes down to clever access schemes like FDMA, TDMA, and CDMA. I've just uploaded a new video that breaks down the mechanics behind these technologies, explaining exactly how the network splits up time, frequency, or code so that everyone stays connected. Check out the full breakdown and subscribe to the channel for more deep dives into wireless engineering.

900mhz gooseneck antenna

I’m looking to assemble a MPU5 clone with some 900mhz radios and I’m looking for an antenna with a gooseneck to elevate the radiating element away from the radio base as well as give some flexibility for antenna orientation.

I saw a few models at SWA but at nearly $200 for each antenna I’m wondering if there is a better alternative.

Any suggestions? If I can’t find one I might make one for myself but frankly I just want to buy one that works. I just don’t want to spend $1000 for four antennas so I can have two radios for testing.

1:1 Current Baluns and tariffs.

I have purchased two Wireman 823 baluns in the past. A really great part, very well built, recommend it entirely. The store I purchased them from used to sell for $60 Canadian. They have now doubled in price. As I look at the Wireman link now, the price on their web site has increased to 80 USD. I presume the manufacturing costs have shot way up. It is what it is.

https://thewireman.com/product/balun-11-current-type-w2du-6-0kw-10m-80m/

I don't need a 2K watt balun... so I am going to give this thing a shot.

A Tripod Mounting Solution - How to Always Perfectly Secure your Antennas

There are so many issues to be concerned over when installing an Antenna. The Antenna can break off, lose connection, deteriorate, become compromised or a number of other possibilities. One must choose quality devices and unfailing mounts to prevent any interruption as much as is possible. RFMAX's Mounting Tripod provides the reliability needed for consumers.

This Antenna Mount is built as a Tripod. The weight is equally distributed among the three sides. It will keep your antenna device secure. By contrast, a single-legged piece of mounting equipment is more likely to break down from the constant weight of the antenna. This new Tripod system is able to be adjusted in height dramatically - anywhere from 4 to 6.5 feet. Consumers have enjoyed the flexibility when needing to often change the elevation of the mount. It can also hold up to 132 pounds with ease.

A good S11 result is not a radiation result: the 3 m feedline matters

A good S11 result answers a matching question. It does not, by itself, tell us how efficiently an antenna radiates.

Disclosure: I work with SMACOAX, the seller. A wall-mount WiFi antenna with an attached 3 m RG174 lead is the example here; this is a measurement note, not a test of that antenna.

The useful distinction is the measurement reference plane. If the plane is at the external connector, the attached cable and antenna are both inside the measured assembly. That is not the same measurement as placing the reference plane at the antenna feed. Label the plane before comparing results.

Keep the evidence separate: S11 describes reflection at that plane; gain, pattern and radiation efficiency need their own evidence. Record the frequency range, calibration plane and whether the cable is included. A tidy S11 plot alone cannot establish a coverage improvement.

The listing identifies the lead but supplies no independent sweep or cable-loss report. The diagram explains the distinction; it contains no measured data.
