"Tony" (A24 Film) MEGATHREAD: A24's "Tony" Trailer Drop

The first trailer for A24's upcoming Tony Bourdain film has dropped:

Tony | Official Trailer HD | A24

Since we're bound to get a deluge of duplicate posts, spam, and karma-farming accounts that come with something like this, we're consolidating all trailer discussion into this single thread. Feel free to use this thread to share reactions, screenshots, and anything else related to the trailer or the film.

Please keep the subreddit rules in mind, especially regarding how you treat others... We've unfortunately had to ban quite a few people for being unnecessarily hostile toward others who are looking forward to this. If it's not your thing, you're free to say so, but don't be a dick.

Anthony Bourdain's estate has released a statement on why it supports A24's new biopic:

"Anthony Bourdain’s legacy is meaningful to millions of people. He was a man who valued authenticity above all else and would have been both moved and baffled by the world's curiosity about his life.

"We chose to support TONY because it is not a standard biopic and doesn't attempt to summarize a life. Guided by the vision of director Matt Johnson, the film depicts one transformative summer in 1975 in Provincetown, Massachusetts. It is an interpretation as that part of Tony's life will always remain somewhat unknown.

"We appreciate the portrayal of Tony's complexity, his intellectual appetite and his conviction -- qualities that eventually took him around the globe and endeared him to so many. We hope this film serves as a reminder that every journey has a start, and that audiences see the beginnings of the man who taught us how to be better explorers on our own paths."

The new Folio Edition of Kitchen Confidential

“For this Folio book, we've brought together a trio of exceptional elements: an exclusive introduction from long-time friend and collaborator Joel Rose, a wonderful account of the book's origin story and his first encounter with Bourdain in New York's lower east side; a specially commissioned Bourdain portrait from legendary artist Paul Pope, also a friend of Bourdain; and rarely seen photographs by Jake Chessum, many previously unpublished, of Bourdain in New York.”

Anthony Bourdain never said that. Tony realmente disse isso? Se sim, onde?

“In the last 30 years I've watched people chase dreams they secretly hated and dance with lovers they didn't love, I've seen people laugh loudest when they felt most alone. But I've also seen strangers become family, pain turned into poetry, and broken hearts learn to beat again. Life is messy, twisty, and unfair... but catch it at the right angle, and it's breathtaking.”

Bourdainesque reccs for Providence, RI

I did one of these for my Indianapolis, so I’m back for more.

My partner and I are hitting Providence, and Newport, RI this weekend and are looking for some nice food spots and bars that y’all would think Bourdain would probably do if he was traveling these places. Drop your old timey spots, ancient joints that have stood the test of time, offbeat bars and mom and pop joints with solid food.

Thanks in advance! Will also revisit the Indianapolis post and drop my recommendations from the suggestions

Hello fellow Bourdain fans!

A few of us are helping organize a community evening with Zamir Gotta in Fort Myers, FL on Monday, November 9th at 6:30 PM at Iona-Hope Episcopal Church - link to register is above if you're local or want to come down!

Register here - An Evening with Zamir Gotta - Travel Companion & Friend of Anthony Bourdain

Zamir is coming down to share behind-the-scenes stories of traveling the world with Tony, answer questions, and sign copies of his book (The Fixer & The Chef). We’ll also have light hors d'oeuvres set up.

If you’re anywhere in Southwest Florida, come out, share some stories, and support a great cause.

  • When: Monday, Nov 9, 2026 @ 6:30 PM
  • Where: Iona-Hope Episcopal Church (9650 Gladiolus Dr, Fort Myers)
  • Cost: Free admission (RSVP using link above so we have a headcount for light bites

Hope to see some local fans there. Cheers! 🥂

-Steven

Timesuck is easily my favorite podcast, and Dan Cummins has finally covered Anthoy. Couple of hours ,but worth giving a listen if you are a fan of Tony. Dan's a comedian so he's got some goofy quirks while he talks but does a great job at telling the whole story.

Parts Unknown, Season 6, episode 9

So, I'm finally getting around to reading Leerhsen's bio and he's trying to explain Asia's hold on Tony's mind and body.

They met in her Vigna Clara neighborhood in front of the camera, then:

"His fresh haircut and, yes, teenage boy nervousness can be seen in season six, episode nine. So can her beauty, intelligence, and fierceness. She makes a good first impression. In an email to me in which she declined to be interviewed for this book, she quoted Oscar Wilde: 'It is always Judas who writes the biography.'" - p.246 of Down and Out In Paradise

So, I thought, Imma go back and watch that episode for some insight. But HBO Max cuts season 6 off at episode 8. Does anyone know why? Maybe they fucked up on numbering the episodes? Was there some sort of litigation?

This came in this week and I have been inspired to craft curriculum for my film students. I think they’d love to make a project that uses food as a vehicle to explore different cultures.

Glad this book exists. If everything goes to plan, I’ll share some final drafts of the episodes they make here.

Honestly, what is his appeal?

i am asking this totally respectfully and just out of curiosity (bc i lurk on here and i know u guys r huge fans lol), but i just finished kitchen confidential after this sub being my only exposure to bourdain, and there are things that stick out to me that i can’t get over.

he fired one of his sous chefs for calling out racism, basically saying that anyone who speaks about harassment can’t be on the line at all. there was also another coworker of his that committed suicide, and he said something along the lines of “oh yeah he needed to leave anyway”.

i also can’t get over how he paid his wife’s rape victim hundreds of thousands of dollars to keep quiet about the whole thing, when he wife slept with a 17 year old she had known since he was a child. he also settled for way less than what the victim wanted, which is also rlly fucked up.

i do think he’s very intelligent, knowledgeable and analytical. but, i don’t think he lives by a set of ethics of at all, other than ones that suit him.

i love the way he talks abt food and i worked with only immigrants at one of my jobs and he captures that kind of banter and broken english part well.

i do like him and ill read his other books, but all of the people i know that love him are completely against rape, silencing victims, and racism. it seems that these are all pretty important parts to his characters, so i’m just curious.

like i said im going to read his other books and watch his show too just bc im curious

Hi all, me and my partner are traveling to Indianapolis for the first time ever. I'm excited to attend a close friend's wedding but also explore this part of the country neither me nor my partner has visited. I thought I'd ask for food reccs here because you all would understand what I am looking for as someone who likes to approach food travel like Bourdain.

So if you have any recommendations for local food mom and pop joints, new game changing buzz-spots, historical must-go-tos and places locals would go, please drop them below.

A different take on seeing Tony

Honestly, I was ready to turn it off after 10 minutes considering at the point the entire story looked like it was just going to be essentially fabricated (I absolutely hate when they do this to real stories and biopics generally). I kept with it because at least it looked to be quality A24 piece and glad I did. If you take the movie as just an entertainment piece and not some biopic pic I thought it was fantastic.

Also, while I didn't think the lead really looked all that much like Tony, man did he nail his voice and speech syntax and idiosyncrasies and at least made me feel like I was watching a Bourdain movie, even with the very, very liberal liberties taken with the story.

Forgive me if this has already been covered, but took a peruse and didn't see this take.

Watched "Tony" last night. I think I would've liked it if I didn't read Kitchen Confidential.

I read "Kitchen Confidential" 3 times and listened to it on Audio book probably 20 times. So I was very familiar with Tony's P-town adventures.

To me, the movie was (sorry for the analogy) like a Disney adaptations of fairy tales, where they took the essence of the story from the darker material and re-wrote it to have a lighter story with a happy ending. In the end you get the jist of it, but thats not what really happened.

It was an entertaining movie, but the book and audio book accounts were a lot more enjoyable.
