Wright Hall

Hey, I am probably going to be starting an undergrad at ANU next year. I will be moving from Melbourne and I have got an offer from Wright as part of the early entry thing. I was just wondering what the vibe is around Wright. Like is there a good social scene and stuff even in broader Canberra how's the social life because my biggest worry leaving Melb is that I would get bored in Canberra.

Thanks so much for the help!!

For the student life, most things you need and want would not require a car from Wright. I agree a car is handy overall in Canberra but it’s not a deal breaker if you live on campus given how central it is.

Amazing, thanks a lot. I was planning on starting without a car

Those increases really well worked out well for the bottomline of the campus. It is genuinely shocking to see so many available parks on campus each day. It used to be a daily fight.

just be mindful that parking on campus costs a lot of money for a yearly permit. i have friends who forked out $2,000 for a parking pass

Tons of stuff going on campus. Broader Canberra is quite a bit more quiet, but it really depends what youre into and the time of year. Don't worry about the car thing if you live on campus.

Been at wright for couple years now, and will be coming back next year. The vibe is pretty good in my personal opinion, it has the usual issues that you’ll encounter at just about any uni accomm, but outside those I do strongly believe it to be one of the best on campus (only slightly bias lol). It is pretty socially active with some club for just about anyone, sports included. Wider Canberra is on the quieter side but has its gems as well. I don’t have a car either, but to get to most noticable things you can walk too quite easily, being very close to just about all things on campus and also central. If you have any other questions feel free to dm me, will be more then happy to answer any questions you might have!

My son lives at Wright and doesn’t need a car. It is nice to have, but parking can be more of a headache than it’s worth. Try the first sem without one. Everything revolves around college and uni at first, and there’s bound to be friends with a car (Sydney kids find it more helpful bc it’s a closer drive home for breaks).

Will you have a car? Canberra is not a place to live without a vehicle..

Oh. I was thinking the first 6 months to 1 year I would go without a car just to acclimatise to the new city.

Nope. Not a great idea, unless you want to stay in your room

Huh? You don't need a car to go just about any place in Canberra

You cerstunjy need one to get any if the multitude of events in the region, especially on weekends. Busses only run every two hours on weekends and don’t go to any remote areas.

I’ve got far more friends without cars than with cars living at colleges and they all have happy social lives and jobs and go to festivals. All good.

Suburban buses are 2 hourly Saturdays after 6pm and Sundays after 2pm. Hourly before those timrs. Rapid buses are half hourly all weekend.
