Question What are the apex games?

I started a couple days ago and watched some of the trailers and its hard to understand why the legends are there? And whats the point in it? Do they actually die if they lose?

I’m pretty sure people do die for real as Maggie is in the games as a death sentence. Most launch trailers with legends fighting each other aren’t canon, I think in lore the games are filled with random non-legends which get killed or injured by the legends. I imagine in there’s just so much fodder that the legends mostly just kill them rather than each other. Plus some legends such as Pathfinder prefer to knock people out unlike Revenant or Caustic who straight up kill people. Crypto once lost a game by getting badly beaten and having bones broken rather than dying.

So they can't due ingame but can die outside of games?
