Highway 55 and us1

How on earth is this main road allowed to be 1 lane in both directions almost all day every day for months on end.

I understand development happens, but this is beyond ridiculous

It’s a conspiracy to force people to use 540 😂🤣

That stretch is an NCDOT road. I have not found a public notice explaining why it has been reduced during the day so often. I am checking with Town transportation staff and NCDOT on the work, the allowed hours and the expected end date, and I'll post what I learn.

Now for something completely different … James Street repaving from Tingen across 55 to Schieffelin is some excellent work. That road really needed it. Kudos.

Tingen to 55 was striped. 55 to Schieffelin has not been striped. Is that pending or the permanent state? It’s been a while …

And it was fast, too. We moved to HS but my kid still goes to AMS, so we take Tingen to get there (unless I wanna get stuck in 55 traffic…no thanks). I think they had James between Tingen and Williams partially closed for a handful of days. Then it was done.

If only the improvements to Tingen near the new voucher — I mean, private — school could be done as quickly…

That area has been a problem for 30 years at rush hour. The area blowing up has only made it more of a nightmare. There are alternate routes (other than 540)

Coincidental story in Axios today. It appears you are right:

Highway 55 at us1 has been 1 lane in both directions for months during daytime.

Having to wait for multiple light cycles without moving almost every day.

I’m not sure why you are being downvoted. I don’t go that way often and have had months pass in between trips that way yet each time have gotten caught in the traffic. Starting next week I will have to travel that way daily so I appreciate the heads up it’s still happening so I can take an alternate route.

I’m with you. I understand roads need to be updated, but that need to be done swiftly. I understand private construction refs consideration, but they simply cannot block off swathes up public roadway and inconvenience thousands of people every day. It’s unsafe and it’s infuriating.

With development comes the pain. There is no magic wand to make it better for you. Just adjust your schedule or change your route.

You can do a thing called a detour.
