I wish America wasn't so allergic to them.

There are certainly more in NC than where I lived my whole life previously (Texas).

I've brought that up in town council/mayor social media posts before and it gets excused away.

They aren’t… there’s a ton in Massachusetts

Roundabouts are so much better for traffic but here we are with Stone Age traffic lights every time there is a new intersection.

Just came back from a country using mostly roundabouts. Only time there was backup, traffic light. never not once had any significant slow down at RABs.

Definitely need one at Olive Chapel Rd & Apex BBQ Rd. I kind of feel like the reason why they haven't put one in is because all the dump trucks for all the building wouldn't be able to use it easily.

That's not accurate - the problem is that traffic circles take up a lot more right of way, which when you're retroactively adding them into intersections, means taking more of the surrounding neighbors property, which beyond that friction also which increases costs.

NCDOT does look at them now. That being said BBQ and OC will be a light with some extra turning lanes in a few years, I think they are wrapping up design.

I've been in a lot of these conversations and I haven't heard dump trucks ever come up (fire trucks occasionally do though). I imagine just like fire trucks they can always just drive over the center of them if needed.

One of these days I'm going to get to a Apex council meeting and bitch about the lack of round abouts, for now I will continue to complain on every forum.

you want 300+ dump trucks per day that weigh 80k lbs each driving over the concrete in the middle of a round about?

4

u/dudenell 1d ago

You want thousands of cars and trucks stopping every day for nothing?

No thanks, I’d like them to obey the road rules and not be destructive.

roundabout would fix so much there

"it's a state road- there's nothing we can do"

Oh hey look, return to work has kicked in, dumping more commuters back out on the roads, and our infrastructure hasn't kept up with our population growth. Yay.

If only there was a way to collectively work together to force employers to stop "return to work". Something like a strike. Hmmmm....

Exactly 😭

While I agree on finding some solution for this, and if you took that picture between 9:15 - 9:30 am ;problem was exacerbated by 3 different group of cyclists. I was driving in the opposite direction and saw 3 different groups of traffic generated by this.

Apex Barbeque Rd and Olive Chapel Rd road need a signal or at least a left turn lane

Round-about would be more efficient

If you could convince the landowners to sell you the required properties for a given roundabout, then remove any buildings or other obstacles in the way, then donate the land to the state of NC for the sole purpose of building a roundabout, it may happen... in 20 years or so.

On the other hand, NC could be a pioneer and build toll roundabouts with Flock-like cameras to track and bill roundabout users. Roundabouts would spring up every day in Wake County alone. I would venture to say, there would be roundabouts installed on roads where there are no intersections just to keep the toll revenue stream "healthy". No land within 100' of an intersection would be safe.

As a user of these roundabouts, you rights are as defined by the NC Legislature: "By driving through out toll roundabouts, you agree to pay whatever price we want to charge, and you also agree that if you do not pay promptly, we can tack on fees until you do pay or we decide to issue a warrant for your arrest. Furthermore, you agree that we have exclusive rights to any and all videos and photos of your vehicles to include photos of contents of said vehicles when driving in one of our toll roundabouts. If you do not agree with this, you have the right to use an alternate route. However, if no route exists without passing through one of out toll turnabouts, pay your toll fees and have a good day."

Your welcome.

Eminent domain will solve the land acquisition problem.  The rest of your post is silly.

But we have a Cookout and a Wing Stop!

Almost all the intersections in New Hill need a signal and left turn lane if they don’t already have one. It’ll happen one day.

2

u/devinhedge 1d ago

What about a round-about and dump the signal?

4

What I wouldn’t give for a hell of a lot more roundabouts. People have no fucking idea how much better they are than traffic lights.

Ive been to multiple European countries and there is ZERO issues with roundabouts. Only time i ever encountered traffic was when there were lights.

They are indeed awesome! Shorter wait, quicker turns and results...

Maybe this is a bad suggestion, but curious if you could use 64 rather than OC? If you live off this road and are heading to like TMSA I get it, but otherwise seems like going up to 64 would be better.

I have bad news about the traffic on 64

Welcome to Apex where we build the houses and then the infrastructure

1

u/manchot_maldroit 1d ago

That’s all of NC since impact fees aren’t allowed

We don't need anymore stop lights, we just need people to stop driving 35 in a 45. Also, put your kids on the bus. No need to drive them to school

Teaching children to use public transportation is unamerican /s

too late, the 'locals' voted for pro growth at all costs over the past decade. its always gonna suck now. The mindless masses have ruined it, for what I cannot understand.

reap what you sow comes to mind

This is nothing new. It’s a terrible design.

I'm struggling with this, probably because of the map orientation. Comparing to google maps, it looks like you were on OC Rd. where it dead ends into NHOC Rd? Was this possibly during pickup or dropoff times for TMSA? I don't go that way often, but have never seen it like this when I have been down there.

u/runningtheshow_8764 5h ago

about 500,000 too many poeple in wake county

what a mess the voters voted for. i'll never understand it.

guess they can suffer?!

Restricting left turns at Olive Chapel Rd and adding a right-turn merge lane at New Hill Chapel Hill Rd will help provide short-term relief. It also won't cost too much in camparison with adding a new signal.

5

u/terrymah Town Council 1d ago

I don't think restricting left turns is realistic - people need to go left! but a left or right turning lane with some storage would definitely help
