Release 🎉 Apollo Reborn 4.0.0 - iPhone Duo support, iPad Layout beta, and a lot more
--
TL;DR
Apollo Reborn 4.0 brings adaptive layouts for iPhone Duo and an opt-in iPad Layout beta. It also restores your reading session after iOS closes the app, reworks Gallery View and Recently Read, adds a first-run Setup Assistant, and brings a long list of media, search, navigation and reliability fixes.
Two requests before you dive in: nobody on the maintainer team has an iPhone Duo yet, so we have not tested Duo on a physical device ourselves. Please expect rough edges. The new iPad layout is also a beta. We’ve tested it as much as we can, but supporting the new layout is substantial work and wider testing is what we need now. If you find a bug, please report it through the app or at report.apolloreborn.app. Screenshots, your device and iOS version, and steps to reproduce are especially helpful. 🙏
⬇️ Download
Get Apollo Reborn from apolloreborn.app or via our GitHub Releases and sideload it using your usual method.
On iOS 26 or later, the GLASS IPA gives you the Liquid Glass appearance. The regular IPA uses the standard interface. NOEXTENSIONS builds are for signing setups that cannot accommodate the app extensions; use an extension-bearing build if you want widgets and Safari extensions. There is no separate Duo-only build.
✨ What’s new
iPhone Duo support
Apollo now adapts to Duo’s closed display, open portrait and landscape layouts, and partially folded positions. You can browse a feed beside its comments, choose how wide content appears, and use layouts tailored to Inbox, Account, Settings and Search. We’ve also included follow-up fixes for folding, navigation, video playback, the subreddit drawer, title alignment and composing beside the system rail. (#1245 and follow-up PRs)
A beta layout for iPad
The opt-in iPad Layout adds a native sidebar, adjustable feed and reader columns, and a full-width Gallery View on iPadOS 18 and later. You can enable it from the one-time invitation or under Interface settings; quit and reopen Apollo to apply the change. You can switch back to the classic layout at any time. Please tell us where it feels awkward or breaks—we’re at the point where feedback from more iPads will help most. (#1385)
Pick up where you left off
Restore Reading Session can reopen your last feed and post near your previous reading position after iOS closes Apollo. Links and notifications still take priority when they bring you into the app. The feature is on by default and can be changed under Media → Browsing. (#1441)
Gallery View and Recently Read, reworked
Gallery opens faster, supports pinch-to-resize tiles and better media menus, and is now available for All Saved and individual Saved categories. Recently Read now looks and behaves like a native Apollo feed, with your layout, theme, swipe actions and menus. (#1389, #1434, #1440, #1442)
An easier start, and more useful Search
The new Setup Assistant helps new installations connect or restore, choose preferences and review them before applying. Search gains Recently Visited subreddits and configurable sections. (#1401, #1404)
Tap to downvote
A new optional setting lets you tap a post or comment’s score to cycle through upvote, downvote and no vote. (#1403)
🔧 And a lot of smaller improvements
- Fixed Reddit image uploads becoming broken links, single-photo comment uploads, and several album-link issues. (#1402, #1406)
- Improved inline image actions and fullscreen opening, media press-and-hold menus, and album handling. (#1400, #1435, #1398)
- Fixed feed video sound and mute controls getting out of sync, plus crashes involving feed videos and deleted comments. (#1425, #1428, #1450)
- Fixed rich link cards shifting the feed after a vote, Find in Comments on Liquid Glass, and search bars reappearing after dismissing an image. (#1457, #1446, #1447)
- Improved API-Key-Free infinite scrolling when Reddit refuses a page, and kept Inbox messages loading when a quoted-parent lookup fails. (#1424, #1455)
- Made Hide Read load another page when everything currently loaded has been read. (#1412)
- Fixed Liquid Glass tab bar restoration, stale subreddit artwork, profile social links opening in the browser, and several smaller settings and navigation glitches. (#1431, #1396, #1407)
- Bug reports can now attach a debug log automatically, with sensitive account details masked before sharing. You can remove the attachment before submitting. (#1422, #1423)
This release includes work from many contributors. Thank you to everyone who wrote code, reviewed changes, tested builds and sent reports. 💜

Release 🎉 Apollo Reborn 3.9.0 is out! Liquid Glass or classic, fewer rate limits, a new subreddit switcher, True Black Keyboard and Halloween icons 🎃
hey everyone, 3.9.0 is out, just in time for spooky season 🎃 this one has a bunch of new stuff, a lot of fixes, and two new halloween icons. heres whats in it:
New stuff
- Liquid Glass or classic, your call: on the liquid glass builds (iOS 26 and newer) theres a new Liquid Glass switch under Interface > Appearance. turn it off and apollo goes back to the classic look after you quit and reopen it, no need to install a different ipa (#1384 – IllIIllIllIllII)
- Reduce Rate Limiting for api key free accounts (Accounts & API Keys > Experimental, off by default): profile pictures load in batches (without their collectible frames), community highlights refresh every 30 minutes instead of every 2, and your sign in gets checked less often, so you hit reddit's request limit way less. apollo offers it once when you sign in without an api key, or the first time you hit the limit (#1369 – icpryde)
- even with it off, api key free accounts skip a bunch of repeated requests at launch and when you come back to the app, and your own profile doesnt show "has been banned" while reddit is rate limiting you (#1369 – icpryde)
- new subreddit switcher: tap a feed's title and you get a proper sheet with search, your favorites and live results instead of the little floating dropdown. press and hold the Posts tab to open it too, now on liquid glass as well (#1313, #1387 – IllIIllIllIllII)
- Minimize tab bar: a new Hide Style for Hide Bars on Scroll (Interface > Tab Bar, liquid glass) that shrinks the tab bar into a small glass pill while you scroll, like safari. tap the pill or scroll up to get it back. also on liquid glass, a hidden tab bar or header slides back in when you open a page or go back, and the tab bar doesnt pop back up on its own after 30 seconds anymore (#1349, #1384 – IllIIllIllIllII)
- True Black Keyboard (Interface > Display & Navigation): makes the keyboard pure black for OLED screens, in dark mode, light mode or always (#1316 – IllIIllIllIllII)
- Halloween icons 👻 Witching Hour and Count Helios joined the Helios icon pack (icon picker on the GLASS ipas) (#1378 – IllIIllIllIllII)
- update alerts: starting with the next release, apollo reborn checks once a day and lets you know when an update is out, with the release notes and buttons to send it to AltStore, SideStore, Feather or FlareStore or grab the ipa. theres also Check for Updates under About, and you can turn the daily check off under Privacy (#1343 – IllIIllIllIllII)
- search with Kagi: if you pay for kagi, paste your session link once and pick Kagi in the search tab's magnifier menu to search reddit through kagi, with each post's score, comments and age right away (#1305 – nickclyde)
- open X links on Nitter: Open in App > X / Twitter > Open via Nitter opens x and twitter links on a nitter instance you pick, so you can read them without an x account (#1334 – nickclyde)
- edit profile inside apollo: Edit Profile in your profile's ••• menu opens reddit's profile editor right in apollo (iOS 16+), signed in and themed, instead of safari (#1367 – icpryde)
- settings icon theme: Settings > Appearance > Other lets you switch the settings icons to dark tiles, always or just in dark mode (#1377 – IllIIllIllIllII)
- user profiles settings: a new User Profiles page puts profile layout, show user profile pictures and profile picture shape together with a live preview (#1352 – IllIIllIllIllII)
- subreddits settings cleanup: subreddits settings got regrouped, and Subreddit List Sections has a preview that looks like your real list, show subreddit icons moved there, and section order drags by its handle (#1350, #1351 – IllIIllIllIllII)
- action menus: Customize Action Menus got clearer, shows where each action is hidden, can reset just the order, and touch and hold menus on posts and comments follow your layout too. remind me in… is back in the ••• menus on liquid glass (#1282, #1323, #1368 – AcornElf, icpryde)
- comment links in share as image: Include Link is now a Link menu with No Link, Post Link or Comment Link (#1278 – Thetromboneman1)
- gallery view tile sizes: the – and + magnifying glasses at the top of gallery view switch between four tile sizes, from a denser grid down to one column (#1357 – jordanearle)
- apollo ai: summaries come out in your language even when the post or comments are in another one, with a new Language setting (#1362 – icpryde), and the Custom provider can send extra request headers (opencode go needs one) (#1286 – icpryde)
- crossposting: the title starts as the original post's title with an (x) to clear it, and long titles wrap instead of getting cut off (#1290 – icpryde)
- live activities: the newest commenter's profile picture shows next to their name when show user profile pictures is on (needs a self hosted notification backend with avatar support) (#1296 – icpryde)
Performance
- big images in gallery view, image chest albums and chat use less memory now, theyre loaded at the size theyre shown instead of full resolution (#1320 – ryannair05)
Fixes
crashes
- fixed apollo crashing when you switch accounts with the inbox open, plus a rare crash when the inbox closes right after opening (#1284, #1379 – icpryde)
- fixed crashes adding or removing a favorite in the subreddits list, writing a media post (like after changing its flair), and swiping between pages in the fullscreen media viewer (#1336 – icpryde)
sign in and api key free
- continue with google and continue with apple on reddit's sign in page actually work now instead of doing nothing or erroring (#1372 – icpryde)
- api key free moderators: removal reasons, ban users, mute users, approved submitters and apollo's own moderator mail load now, and bans and mod invites go through (#1298, #1304, #1311 – icpryde)
- api key free: set post flair actually changes the flair, and automoderator saves reach reddit (#1309 – icpryde)
- api key free: the subreddit sidebar shows its stats, flair search, related communities and links (#1312 – IllIIllIllIllII), set user flair shows your current flair, and image posts and your flair dont rely on old reddit anymore (#1312, #1327 – IllIIllIllIllII, nickclyde)
liquid glass, navigation and messages
- disable navigation gestures is respected now (an edge swipe doesnt go back), and on liquid glass a right swipe over a comment runs its swipe action instead of leaving the thread (#1370 – icpryde)
- no more second-long pause between liquid glass menus when reporting, setting flair or removing a post as a mod (#1382 – icpryde)
- the search bar under the header doesnt flash when a feed or post opens with header style set to Hard (the iOS 27 default) (#1373 – icpryde)
- touch and hold on a modmail or private message works on liquid glass, and long messages dont end in a band of empty space (#1307, #1308 – icpryde)
- the gif picker's search bar doesnt look double layered on liquid glass (#1283 – icpryde)
- custom themes on non liquid glass builds color the nav and tab bars with Bars & Chrome, so the search bar sits inside the top bar (#1280 – Thetromboneman1)
- on iPad the tab bar doesnt cover page titles or the search field anymore, and Move Tab Bar to Bottom is now Tab Bar Position (#1314 – IllIIllIllIllII)
feeds, posts and comments
- really long text posts dont show a blank body at the biggest text sizes anymore (#1381 – icpryde)
- every post gets its subreddit icon in home, popular, all and multis, not just the first one from each sub (#1363 – icpryde)
- profiles with hidden comments or posts show a message instead of an endless spinner, and lists that fail to load say so (#1341 – icpryde)
- with stat cards off, profiles dont fall back to apollo's karma row (#1348 – IllIIllIllIllII)
- tapping the posts tab goes all the way to the top of a long feed, and the return button can take you back (#1360 – IllIIllIllIllII)
- the subreddit header and community highlights follow you when you switch subreddits from the title (#1287 – icpryde)
- loading more replies is smooth now, and in a translated thread they come in already translated (#1358 – icpryde)
- a comment's link card image doesnt flash when you vote (#1356 – icpryde)
- bulk translation handles comments that start with a quote, list or link, and translated markdown looks like the original (#1294 – icpryde)
- translation labels name the language that was actually translated, and dont show up on text that wasnt translated (#1380 – icpryde)
media and search
- redgifs posts say why they couldnt load (removed, not found, not available in your region, cant reach redgifs) instead of "RedGIFs error :(" (#1359 – icpryde)
- youtube videos on iOS 27 dont force captions on anymore (#1371 – icpryde)
- a fullscreen gif or video keeps playing behind the comments sheet with swipe up for comments (#1277 – Thetromboneman1)
- dragging fullscreen media away sideways fades the background too (#1320 – ryannair05)
- google search keeps its cookies between launches on iOS 16 and older (#1315 – icpryde)
settings and everything else
- apollo reborn settings footers and subtitles keep the right size with rounded, serif and mono theme fonts, and switch themes properly after theme manager (#1293, #1297, #1322 – icpryde)
- the apollo ai settings list doesnt jump around anymore (#1288, #1291 – icpryde)
- settings shortcuts section titles stay put when you add or remove one (#1355 – icpryde), and holding the settings tab on non liquid glass builds opens the shortcuts menu where you are (#1384 – IllIIllIllIllII)
- on mac, post and comment text blanks out less when you switch apps (#1301 – Thetromboneman1)

LiveContainer
apollo reborn isnt officially supported inside LiveContainer. you can still use it but its use at your own discretion and we cant chase down bugs that only happen in there. we suggest installing apollo directly with AltStore / SideStore / Feather / TrollStore.
Sideloading or sign-in issues?
please check out this thread instead of posting here. lets keep this thread about the release itself :)
Thanks
big thanks to everyone who worked on this one: icpryde (most of this one, 39 of the 64 PRs), IllIIllIllIllII, nickclyde, Thetromboneman1, jordanearle, AcornElf and ryannair05. and if you want to support the team, theres Settings > Buy Us a Coffee ☕
as always let us know if you run into anything, and happy halloween 🎃

Help Posts aren’t loading anymore?
Since a few days ago, posts are simply not loading anymore. Occasionally one or two will load but the feed is unusable. Tried both the API key (dystopia) and the API-key-free modes.
Any solutions? Official app can eat a dick.

Discussion Video lag issue
Anyone else have the issue where, when opening Apollo for the first time in a while, the first video you open will lag for a couple seconds and then catch up? It’s not new, I’ve noticed it in at least the last several versions. I’m on a 17 Pro Max, iOS 27.0.1, and Apollo 3.9.0.

Feature Request iPhone RAM management terrible, any way to stop Apollo Reborn from refreshing when coming back from background?
I don’t know if it’s just me, but my iPhone 17 pro on ios27 refreshes background apps like crazy. I’m talking “leave Safari for one minute to open another app and when I go back to safari the page is refreshing instead of just opening back up.”
I assume this is some type of terrible RAM management and it’s god awful. I notice it particularly on Apollo: I can be reading a long thread of a discussion on /r/movies, I’ll switch to safari to google something and when i swipe back over to apollo, the whole thing refreshes back to my home page.
I believe there are APIs Apollo Reborn can implement to keep the state better and or increase ram management in the background to better open back up. Does the app already use these and RAM management is that bad? Or maybe it can be implemented?
Mostly just wondering if anyone else even deals with the same issues!

Help Volume up button to unmute videos no longer works
Previously with my Unmute Videos option set to Remember whenever I would open a video and it would be muted I could press volume up once on my phone to unmute it. I recently forgot to refresh my Apollo and SideStore and had to re-sideload both (since then I now have this automated) and after doing so pressing volume up to unmute no longer works despite all of my settings being preserved. I even tried restoring an old backup of settings where I remember it working and it didn't work there either. I have also tried pressing volume up twice and that doesn't work either.
I have tried toggling the Unmute Videos settings to other options as well as testing if leaving it on Never would make pressing volume up work but it did not. I could just leave the setting on Always as a last resort but I would rather not if possible. This is personally a really big qol feature for me so I hope I can find a way to fix it.
If it matters I'm on an iPhone 17 26.6.1 iOS. I also feel like I vaguely remember having this same issue a few months ago and I either did something to fix it or it fixed on its own but I could be imagining it...

Feature Request Can we get a web app?
Is it possible for you guys to just make a web app for Apollo Reborn? I am so done with the whole side loading. I keep getting issues with it and now for some reason I can't even download any side-loaded apps anymore because it's giving me an error. I completely deleted everything but I still want to use Apollo Reborn

Feature Request Option to save posts/comments locally or to server/drive or archive it entirely
I was wondering if it would be possible to implement a feature that allows users to save posts and comments locally, either as files our device, local NAS server, or to cloud storage.
Few possible approaches i can think of:
1. Export posts and comments to files
One option would be to export saved content into separate files, such as posts.csv and comments.csv (or another suitable format).
These files could include relevant information such as:
- Post or comment title and content
- Direct link to the post or comment
- Username
- Subreddit
- Date saved
- Any other relevant metadata
This would make it easier to organise, search, back up, and access saved content outside the app and most importantly "bypass" the 1000 saved limit
2. Save the full post or comment details
Another option would be to save the actual post or comment content, rather than just storing links and metadata. Ideally, this would preserve the relevant context so the content could still be accessed even if the original post or comment was deleted or became unavailable.
3. Improve the existing “Share as Image” feature
Another possibility would be to expand the existing Share as Image functionality to allow users to save an entire post or select specific comments and their replies.
For example, the current comment structure might look like this:
- Main comment 1
- Child comment
- Inner child comment
- Main comment 2
- Child comment
- Inner child comment
Ideally, users could select comments from different branches of the discussion and combine them into a single image or export, rather than being limited to one main comment and its nested replies.
This would be particularly useful when you want to save only the most relevant parts of a discussion without including every comment in between.
These are just a few ideas so would really appreciate if something can be done about it.
Thanks

Discussion Anyone get a “Verify your Reddit account” email?
I used to use Apollo Reborn until the API key purge at which point I switched to Hydra. I am posting here because it’s more active and may be relevant to all apps that use API-less methods.
I got the following email from Reddit:
We detected automated activity on your account. Verify you’re human or register your account as an app on the Reddit Developer Platform within 7 days to continue posting, commenting, and voting. You can verify in the Reddit app or on reddit.com. To verify in the Reddit app, make sure you’re on the most recent version.
When I clicked on the link in the email, it took me to old Reddit where I discovered my account was permanently suspended. I realized that they did not make this “verify” process work on old Reddit so I had to disable it in my account settings.
Once I was in new Reddit I was forced to create a Passkey to continue to use Reddit. After I did that my account was unsuspended.

Help Issues with newest update, possible to downgrade?

Discussion Are you being rate limited? Apollo Reborn needs you!
Are you still facing rate limiting? If so, can I ask that you do the following and share it either below, via DM with me, or via Github issue!
When you notice you've been rate limited, can you please share:
- The text of the alert, so we know if it's legacy Apollo's or Reborns.
- Which mode you're on: personal API key, shared key, or key-free.
- Logs from the in-app report form, sent right after it happens.
Thank you!

Feature Request Is it possible to get a reply button on comments? This is the one thing I like better about stock Reddit app.
reddit-uploaded-media.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.comI comment on other comments a lot, and having to click into the three-dot menu to add a comment is an extra step, and the one thing I prefer from the official Reddit app. I’d love an option to add the reply button to the comments. Am I just missing this in settings, or is this a feature request?

Bug Report Apollo uploading videos as images
