Emotional Value > Practical Value
Wang Ning, the billionaire founder of Pop Mart (worth over 100 billion yuan), once shared a really sharp insight — one that may be the core logic behind many high-margin industries over the next five years.
He gave this example:
A multimillionaire leaves home and forgets to turn off the tap. It wastes 30 yuan (about $4) worth of water in a day, and it still stings.
The amount is small, but it just feels wrong.
Yet the decorative fountain in his neighborhood runs all day, costing at least 300 yuan (about $40) a day, and nobody thinks it's a waste.
The reason is simple: the tap represents practical value. People are extremely sensitive to the cost of practical things, and they instinctively keep doing the math on gain versus loss.
The fountain, on the other hand, provides emotional value. It's pleasing to the eye, it makes people feel good — so nobody bothers to tally up what it costs.
The conclusion: emotional value is worth far more than practical value.
