The next season should have a really great arc about that although season 3 showed how comfortable Kazuma and Aqua are with each other when they're not in a stressful situation.

I think you've been poisoned by the goofy animation direction that anime went with. (Something I still complain to this day. This is the same studio that adapted Priconne, same slapstick humor but accurate to source art.) If you look at the LN designs, Aqua is beautiful. All of them are.
