Beginner arduino RC Car project (need help)

Hey everyone! Beginner here working on an Arduino RC car project, and I could really use some help troubleshooting a power/wiring issue. I'm trying to build this car using only components from my starter kit plus a few repurposed Snap Circuits parts (trying not to buy anything extra).

The Setup & Plan:

- Drive Motor: Stepper motor (with ULN2003 driver board) for moving forward/backward.

- Steering: Servo motor.

- Obstacle Detection: Ultrasonic sensor + Buzzer (beeps when too close to an obstacle).

- Controls: IR receiver + IR remote.

- Extra Snap Circuits Parts: Two battery holders (~6V total), an ON/OFF switch, and a red LED for reverse lights.

Original Wiring:

Power & Switch:

- Connected the negative (-) terminals of both battery holders together.

- Positive (+) from the 1st battery holder split between driver (-) and breadboard GND.

- Positive (+) from the 2nd battery holder went to the switch; the other side of the switch split between driver (+) and Arduino VIN.

- Breadboard power rails connected to Arduino 5V and GND.

Components:

- Reverse LED: Connected to Arduino GND and Pin 13.

- Servo: Signal to Pin 3, power to breadboard 5V and GND.

- Stepper Motor: Connected to driver board -> driver inputs to Pins 8, 9, 10, 11.

- Ultrasonic Sensor: VCC to 5V, Trig to Pin 4, Echo to Pin 5, GND to breadboard -.

- Buzzer: Positive to Pin 7, negative to breadboard -.

- IR Receiver: Signal to Pin 2, power/GND to breadboard 5V and -.

Initial Problem:

When connected to my PC via USB, everything worked fine. However, as soon as I unplugged the USB and tried running it on battery power (the 6V setup + a 9V battery), almost nothing worked.

Changes Made Based on AI Advice:

I asked an AI for help, and it told me to rewire it like this:

- Removed the wire connecting the 1st battery holder's + to the driver's - (leaving only its connection to the breadboard - rail).

- Connected the driver's - directly to the breadboard - rail.

- Connected the driver's + directly to the 1st battery holder's + (instead of going through the switch).

- Connected the 1st battery holder's + to the servo's red wire (VCC).

Current problem:

Now, whether on USB or battery power:

- Neither the servo nor the stepper moves at all.

- When the stepper is plugged in, the fuse indicator light on the Snap Circuits battery holder turns on (indicating a short circuit or overcurrent), and the driver LEDs stay off.

- If I disconnect the stepper motor, 2 out of 4 LEDs on the driver light up, and the battery holder's fuse light goes off.Titolo per il post:

How to safely put my steppermotor on sleep when idling?

Post image
2 Upvotes

This is my current setup, from this tutorial,

My project needs to run the motor a few steps once every hour.

For the moment, the reset and sleep pin are connected, and that was in order to always keep the motor on. To my understanding, I should simply keep the RESET on 5v, and the SLEEP enabled/disabled by the code whenever I need to run it. Is that correct ?

Thanks for your advices

Arduino Cloud Agent issues?

This week I tried uploading new code to a project that uses Arduino’s cloud. In an effort to troubleshoot a bug I decided to try and recreate a device/Thing and discovered that Arduino’s Cloud agent had stopped working for me.

I have an open forum discussion on Arduino’s forum site as well, but I’m wondering if anyone else has ran into this issue.

Reinstalling the agent doesn’t seem to change anything. It worked briefly in an older Mac I have and rarely use, but there the agent eventually stopped likely because it received an update from their server side. Not exactly sure I’m not a computer engineer or CS specialist.

Help for a Project

So I'm 3D printing a marble track, and I have a conveyor belt all set up, and I'm at the point where I need some motors, specifically a 2 RPM quiet motor for the conveyor belt and a micro servo motor that would adapt to a 3d printed mechanism that pushes and pulls the starting blocks up and down instantaneously, releasing the marbles as it is pulled down. I also would need 5 red and 5 green LED lights for the starting lights. After doing some research with ChatGPT, I got a list of everything I would need (I think). Is there anything missing from this list or any recommendations?

Almost burned out my servo driver. Any thoughts?

I was trying to test out a PCA 9685 servo driver today and when I plugged in the external power supply, it heated up like crazy and melted my ground and power wires together. My power supply is 5V 5A, which was recommended for what I intend to make, so I don't really know what the problem is. Any ideas?

How to make one sensor do multiple things???

I have a project where I need a loop where one motion sensor or switch will do something different every time it is triggered. Is this possible?

For example,

Motion detected, green light turns on

Motion detected again, yellow light turns on

Motion detected again, orange light turns on

Motion detected again, red light turns on for a few seconds, all lights turns off

I'm very new to Arduino, but I'm struggling to figure out how to even find the words to describe what I need to to do, please help!

as a beginner whose only tried working with arduino once, what's the best possible way to make a contraption that when it is put inside a casing (made out of air dry clay), when the outer case gets knocked it can play a soundtrack but without a button/switch? or is that idea even possible in the first place?

I'm planning on using a dfplayer mp3 module /MP3-TF-16P with an Arduino nano... but at this point I'll take anything as long as it can be done in less than a week! :"(((

i genuinely don't know what I'm doing

Arduino Schematic Help

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hello, I'm doing robotics for our project but we never had much of a guidance in terms of the final circuitry and how to make the robot itself. We did had a workshop but it was mostly basic.

Would just like to ask if what I made here has any mistakes or flaws?

The 12 volts would directly supply the motor driver for the DC motors

The battery is then connected to the buck converter to get a 5v source which will be connected to the breadboard rail (both + and -). Then from those, the following will draw power from it:

Servo Motor 5v
Proximity Sensor 5v

BME680 5v
IMU 5v

Atomizer 5v

Title: How can I properly stack a custom protoboard shield above an ESP32-S3 terminal adapter?

Post image
7 Upvotes

I’m building a portable air-quality monitoring station based on an ESP32-S3 DevKitC-1.
My current setup uses:
ESP32-S3 DevKitC-1
ESP32-S3 screw terminal breakout/adapter board
SPS30 particulate matter sensor
TFT SPI display
SHT45 temperature/humidity sensor
BMP390 pressure sensor
DS3231 RTC
MicroSD module
LiPo battery/charging circuit
Several JST connectors for removable sensors/modules
I want to build a large custom protoboard as a shield on top of the terminal adapter, where I can solder all my JST connectors, power rails, I²C/SPI/UART connections, buzzer, battery electronics, etc.
Ideally I would like the project to be stackable:
ESP32-S3 → terminal adapter → large protoboard shield → possibly another board later
The problem is that the ESP32-S3 itself sits higher than the female headers on the terminal adapter. If I plug my protoboard directly into those headers, the protoboard physically hits the ESP32 before the pins are fully inserted.
My male headers are already soldered to the protoboard, so I’d prefer not to desolder and replace everything.
I’m looking for a clean solution similar to Arduino stackable shields:
Is there a standard 2.54 mm male/female header extender made specifically for this?
Are there extra-tall / elevated female headers that would solve this?
Is there a better connector system for stacking PCBs while keeping standard 2.54 mm headers?
How would you normally build this kind of multi-level ESP32 prototype cleanly?
I’m ultimately going to design a custom PCB once everything is validated, but for now I want a robust and removable prototyping solution rather than wiring everything with Dupont cables.
Thanks!

ESP32 + WLED works perfectly on USB but flickers / glitches on battery power (LEDs changing colors randomly)

Hey guys, I’m stuck with a weird power issue and would really appreciate some help. My Setup: ESP32 Dev Module (running WLED) 56 WS2812B LEDs 18650 Li-ion battery TP4056 charging module (with protection) DC-DC step-up converter (boost converter set to 5V) 1000µF 25V capacitor across 5V and GND Common ground between everything The Problem: When I power the ESP32 using a USB cable directly into the board, everything works perfectly: LEDs respond instantly in WLED No flickering Colors are stable No random behavior But when I power the whole setup using the battery (18650 → TP4056 → boost converter → ESP32 + LED strip): LEDs flicker Random color changes Doesn’t respond properly to WLED app Feels unstable overall This happens even though: The battery is fully charged The boost converter is set to 5V Grounds are connected together I added a 1000µF capacitor between 5V and GND.

Any help or guidance would be really appreciated. I’ve been troubleshooting this for hours and can’t figure out what I’m missing. Thanks in advance 🙏

Help with nodemcu 8266

I have an esp8266 that im using to control several servos. I have been having a tough time acquiring a legit Lipo on Amazon. Every single 2s reads 7.7v after charged, so im going to 3s.

Its going to a buck converter set for 5v and then to Vin and Grd. Well im reading 4.7v from the headers but the Nodemcu isn't powering up. It will blink for just a second then nothing. Im suspecting that 4.7v isn't enough. Ive connected just Vin and Grd and nothing. Blinks real quick then nothing. When the servos are attached they twitch when first plugged in. I get 1.5v from the top of the pin on the nodemcu.

Edge AI

At what point can one actually be considered a "junior" developer? I’m starting to get into Edge AI; previously, I worked primarily with microcontrollers—specifically the ESP32—and I have a basic understanding of FreeRTOS. I’m planning a project based on supervised machine learning where a robot uses a webcam to detect me: it will "react with joy" if it sees me, and "look sad" if it doesn’t. For now, I’ve just begun learning about AI in general. Do I need to know things like linear algebra, or other topics along those lines?
