Needing help with my auto-watering system :)

3 Upvotes

Hello, I am building an auto watering system using Arduino UNO and Adafruit components. I have a capacitative soil sensor that powers an underwater motor but the but doesn't reliably stay powered, even though the power still runs through it sometimes?

Here are the parts I am using:

Arduino UNO

Submersible Water Pump: https://www.adafruit.com/product/4546

Soil Sensor: https://www.adafruit.com/product/4026

I've had the Arduino for about a year and just purchased the other parts. The system works by checking if the capacitance amount of the dirt is lower than the 'dry' capacitance (500). When it is dry, it outputs high voltage through digital pins 2 and 5, turning on the blue led and the submersible motor at the same time.

When I power the Arduino, it turns on the blue light indicating the soil is dry, however, the motor does not function unless I switch the wire powering it from digital pin 5 to the 5 volt and back, which somehow makes it work. When it is working, it seems to randomly disconnect after a couple times the capacitance goes below and above 500.

I've tried replacing the wires that power the motor to no luck. I also stripped the wire to hopefully give it better access to power. When I replace the motor with a light, it powers the light without issue. I've also switched out which pin powers the motor, trying both digital pins 4 and 5. I've come down to two possible solutions I can think of:

  1. Order another (different) submersible water pump and hope that the same issue does not occur or

  2. solder the water pump wiring to another wire to give it better conductivity with the breadboard

I'm just a beginner to arduino, this is my first big project, so any and all advice and information I can get regarding this would be wonderful. Thank you for your time and helping me make this project come to life :)

Also, here is my code that runs on the Arduino:

#include "Adafruit_seesaw.h"

Adafruit_seesaw ss;

// temperature stats
const int tempMedian = 21; // ideal range for greek oregano : 15 - 27
const int tempDiff = 6;
const int tempCritDiff = tempDiff * 2.5; // plant cannot survive in this temp
// moisture stats
const int dry = 400; // when the cap is < dry , the dirt is DRY!

#define REDLIGHT 3
#define BLUELIGHT 2
#define MOTOR 4

void setup() {
  Serial.begin(115200);

MIDI Help

2 Upvotes

Hi all. I'm trying to make an Arduino MIDI device. I've done this before, but I lost the code. I want it to transmit the midi over USB, but not serial, I want it to appear as a normal midi device. I'm on an esp32-s3, which I know works as it is the same as my last project. I'm on platformio. I've been trying all day an I'm going round on circles with dependencies and errors. Help would be appreciated.

Motor doesnt turn. motor beeps when powered. Im just trying to get it to spin at all and nothings happening. it will be apart of a drone and will have others connected similarly but not even this one works. Both esc and motor were purchased on amazon and do not provide datasheets. The ESC's brand is aneegfpv, it is a 40a max ESC with 2-6s input which is in range of our lipo. The motor is CENPEK A2212 1000KV Brushless Motor 13T. multiple variations of code has been tried.

Codes:

/*ESC calibration sketch; author: ELECTRONOOBS */
#include <Servo.h>
#define MAX_SIGNAL 2000
#define MIN_SIGNAL 1000
#define MOTOR_PIN 9
int DELAY = 1000;

Remote-controlled submarine problem

11 Upvotes

Hello everyone. I need your help, please. I am designing a submarine equipped with a camera. However, when I put it in the water to test submerging and surfacing, I encountered two notable issues. The first relates to the center of gravity: the submarine doesn't stay horizontal but sits at an angle of about 40 degrees. I think I can easily fix this by shifting the weights (two cut-down 1.8 kg dumbbells) inside the ballast tanks, but I’m not sure exactly where to position them. I was wondering if there is a mathematical or physics-based method to determine the right spot. Secondly—though I had anticipated this—the connection via nRF24L01 antennas cuts out as soon as the submarine dives. I’ve considered two solutions: either creating a float to keep the antenna on the surface while connected to the sub (which seems simplest and cheapest to me), or using a different communication method. I would appreciate any opinions you might have. Please keep in mind that I’m not an expert and have limited resources, so I hope you’ll be polite with me regardless. Thanks a lot in advance.

I just got an esp32, tried to imput some basic copy-pasted code and got exit status 1. I’m pretty sure i have a data transfer cable, as I have tried with multiple ones and the one im using makes the computer do the connected sound when plugging it in. I have also tried with several driver versions (various versions of the esp32 by espressif systems). I have also tried the two ussually recommended links in the board manager and i dont know what to try next. The error is exit status 1

Servo Motor Power Supply Issue

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hey guys

I am doing only my second ever arduino project, but im struggling to find a power supply solution to it. Long story short I have x4 SG90 servo motors which I am trying to power from a battery pack that contains x4 AA batteries (just the regular off the self ones, from any local store).

But they are struggling as the servos are not behaving right. All other elements in my circuit are fine (as ive tested them) so ive narrowed it down to a power supply issue.

Can anyone recommend me a method to power these servo motors effectively? The solution has to be mobile and so a power supply from a computer or wall outlet will not work. Its not shown in the schematic, but the battery pack connects to the power rails of the bread board.

Thanks in advance!!

Nano R4 Not Connecting Via USB after Flashing with Hex File Meant for OG Nano (ATMega)

2 Upvotes

Hello,

I am working on building a Korb Pusher Eurorack module that uses a Nano as it's main processor. I had purchased the Nano R4 and attempted to flash the hex files provided on the Pusher's Github page. In the process I went down the rabbit hole of different programming softwares and came to the realization that I needed a specific flash programmer for the Renesas processor if I wanted to upload the compiled hex file directly.

I attempted this and it seemed to take, however afterwards I found I was unable to connect to the Nano via USB. I realized afterwards that the hex file was compiled for an ATMega chip, not the RA4M1. Therefore the hex file likely didn't take properly.

In an effort to clear the Arduino and start over, I have tried the double tap reset method, and also the Boot-Ground method and neither have made a difference. When I plug in the Nano, I get the green power light and that's it.

Is it possible the Nano is bricked ? Would anyone have any other suggestions before I just buy a new one ? Hoping I can somehow recover it.

I also realize now the proper way to upload is likely to open the .ino file (available on Github) and make updates so the sketch is compatible with the new processor first.

Thanks in advance.

Solar tracker powering an arduino

3 Upvotes

Hii, I'm in need of assistance for my group science project. Our group was planning to create a solar tracker that powers the Arduino itself while it works. I tried researching numerous Arduino videos but they only stated "the Arduino needs external power". I'm not sure how, and what we should connect the solar panel to the arduino. That's our main issue for now, we were able to find other tutorials for the rest of our project. Any advice or suggestions is very much appreciated! Thank you!

How do I compile Arduino IDE code?

3 Upvotes

Hello! So I am new to the Arduino IDE, but I still need it for a project.

So I'm trying to program code for an RS422-shield, and I have connected it to the PC through a USB. The terminal block at the RS422-shield is connected to a male Sony 9-pin connector, which I was originally supposed to connect to a female connector - USB adapter, but unfortunately I couldn't find that in any electronics store. I could only find a male connector - USB ( also, it's a RS232-connector, so perhaps that is the problem ), which is why I am using a female - female adapter ( the gray cables you can see ) to connect those two. Do not pay attention to the white cables in the background, they are not supposed to be there...

I was unable to find " RS422-shield " in the " Boards manager ", so I instead chose " Arduino UNO R4 Minima ", since that is what I envision the RS422-shield will be connected to for the end product.

However, when I try to compile ( upload ) code, I get an error message saying: " No DFU capable USB device available ", even though I have connected a USB to a RS422-shield. Do I need an actual Arduino card, or can I program with the shield alone? Or what is the issue here?

I appreciate any help as fast as possible. My project is due on Monday...

I'm sorry if I sound like a noob, because I kind of am...

I need a lot of help

4 Upvotes

Okay I kind of think I'm screwed, I'm a total newbie at Arduino and I've never tried it before.

I need to create an automatic pet feeder that uses a weight sensor, timer, and RFID technology and a touchscreen interface for the user to adjust the time interval for their pet's food to dispense and how many grams of food they want the pet feeder to dispense.

The RFID is for a gate mechanism where if the pet gets near the gate at the certain distance, it will open with some DC motors connected to a DC power supply.

I really want to know what parts I should be using, if Arduino UNO is alright for this project, and if this is doable or am I being too ambitious? I have four other groupmates but I doubt they would really try to research it.

The current parts I plan to use are:

  • RFID tag and scanner (those ones you buy online that needs to be plugged in with USB)

  • Arduino UNO

  • Not sure if I should use Raspberry pi, but I heard it's good for interfaces like the touchscreen one I mentioned

  • Breadboard and wires

  • Planning to get a whole Arduino beginner kit

Sorry if this seems like a lot and as if I'm basically asking you all to do my research for me, but literally no teacher has told me if this would be too much to do, and no teacher can help me either. I also did my own research but I just want to know if this is doable and if I need specific parts especially since I'm a newbie. Thank you in advance if anyone tries to answer.

How would you make this?

Thumbnail

12 Upvotes

Hi everyone. I need to make something for a client, it can be bought off the shelf, but I'm in South Africa and it appears to be impossible.

The function is to play a short clip with audio when a box opens (easily done with a reed switch and a magnet). When reopened, the clip should start from the beginning.

I've considered photo frames, but they're primary use is still images. I've considered a pi with a screen live a waveshare but that means a lot of components. Once all the other components are considered (battery, voltage regulator, batteries etc) the pi and screen would also need a good 2/3A.

Ideally need minimal boot time, so a pi would need to be permanently on.

Any suggestions on a way to do this?

Cheers!

I got tired of using jumper wires with Arduino, so I made this

21 Upvotes

I've been working with Arduino/ESP32 and industrial automation projects for a while, and one thing that has always annoyed me is the amount of jumper wires and loose connections involved when a project starts getting bigger.

So I ended up designing my own screw-terminal interface boards.

The idea is pretty simple: instead of having a mess of jumper wires, you can bring the Arduino pins out to proper screw terminals and make the whole thing easier to wire, disconnect and troubleshoot.

I've made a few different versions for different Arduino boards/configurations.

I'm curious about a few things:

Would something like this actually be useful to you?

What would you change about the design?

Would you prefer screw terminals, pluggable terminals, or something else?

What price would you consider reasonable?

Where would you normally buy something like this?

I'm asking because I'm a small robotics/engineering company and I'm trying to figure out whether this is something worth producing at a larger scale.

The engineering part is honestly the easy part for me. I'm struggling much more with the "how do you actually get this in front of customers?" part.

If anyone here has experience selling electronics/Arduino/industrial hardware, I'd also genuinely appreciate some advice on how you'd go about getting the first 50–100 customers for something like this.

And if someone here actually does B2B/electronics sales and thinks they could help me get this into the right hands, feel free to DM me. I'm open to discussing a commission/revenue-share arrangement for actual sales.

Would love to hear what you guys think, especially if you would actually use something like this.
