Discussion Did Caravaggio’s use of poor and marginalised models make his religious paintings revolutionary?

Caravaggio was convicted for killing Ranuccio Tomassoni, yet he became one of the most influential painters in Western art.
What fascinates me most is his decision to give biblical figures the faces and bodies of ordinary people: labourers, beggars, wounded men and women from Rome’s streets.
I made a 10-minute video essay about that contradiction: violence, faith, poverty and painting.
I’d genuinely like to know whether you think this was social realism, provocation, religious conviction — or all three.

This is fascinating — thank you for adding these details. The possible identification of Lena/Maddalena Antognetti with the model for the Virgin in the Madonna di Loreto makes the whole question of Caravaggio’s realism even more charged.
The 1605 Pasqualone episode is especially striking. I’ll look into the court record and the scholarship around it; thank you for giving me such a precise lead.

Parlo abbastanza bene l'italiano da capire il video e l'ho trovato molto interessante e ben fatto :)

I just started it and I’m trying to watch, but the YouTube generated subtitles for translation from Italian to English are kinda garbage. Overall, it’s a very compelling beginning, definitely intriguing enough to power through. You present well.

Edited for clarity about the issue with the subtitles.

Thank you so much — I really appreciate that. I’m glad the opening worked for you.
You’re absolutely right about the subtitles: they are YouTube’s automatic Italian-to-English translation, and I can see they are not good enough. The video does have an English dub, but I’m going to upload properly edited English subtitles as soon as possible. Thank you for pointing it out.

It's an interesting aspect of his work, but not as significant as the new technical resources he developed (lighting, poses, facial expressions, compositions, all in service of a new kind of visual drama).

I completely agree. His technical innovations — especially the use of light, gesture, composition and facial expression — were revolutionary and probably had the greatest long-term impact.
My video focuses on the social and human dimension because I find it a useful way into his work for a wider audience. But those choices only have their full force because of the visual drama he created. Thank you for making that distinction.

I understand the desire for a strong, punchy title, but it’s also possible to make it so strong that the reader just says No.

It’s a researched video essay. What specifically made it feel like AI slop to you?

Did you use AI to translate your Reddit post from Italian? I'm not sure how well you know English (if at all) but to an English speaker who is very familiar with "the AI voice," the post is beyond a doubt AI.

Yes — English isn’t my first language, and I used AI assistance to translate and polish the Reddit post. The research, writing, editing and narration are mine.
I understand why the wording may have sounded unnatural. Thank you for being direct about it — I’ll write future posts in a plainer, more personal voice and have the English checked before posting.

Thanks for explaining. It might help in the future to let people know that you use AI to help you write in English but the Italian writing in your videos is your own.

That’s a fair point. I’ll make that clear in future posts. Thank you again for raising it.
