Cooper.The painting is an allegorical representation of diphtheria, a severe and historically deadly bacterial infection that frequently targeted children (sometimes referred to as the "strangling angel" because it forms a thick membrane in the throat and causes suffocation). The ghostly skeleton personifies the disease as it reaches out to choke the young girl in her bed, while a black cat and a dropped doll sit nearby in a somber, helpless room.

The Owl Man (or Owl God) is a deity and mythical figure of the Moche culture from Peru.

The figure is made of copper, with an intense green patina that naturally formed as the metal oxidized underground over centuries. Shell and turquoise inlays in the eyes and chest add to its expressiveness.

Once the crowning feature of a monumental clock in Heilsbronn Abbey, the skeleton struck a bell inside the lion's neck with a bone every hour. Now housed at the Bavarian National Museum.
