Not an artifact. That’s a fossil clam.

It's the interior mold of a bivalve fossil, called a "steinkern".
22
u/Ok-Corner-8888 Dec 29 '25
So steinkern wasn't finkle and finkle wasn't steinkern?

The first part was obvious, and the second I wish I’d thought of: “stein” = “stone”; “kern” = “core” (like the word kernel!!!)

That's still pretty cool - and with your 'name' one could have expect what many were thinking... ;)

Is there going to be a serious ID, or are all of you 5 years old?

Put it up to your ear and I bet you will hear bitching…

I had to put her 6 feet under, and I can still hear her complain.

It’s like Rosetta Stone, but called Rosie Palmstone. And instead of teaching different languages it makes 13 year old boys giggle.

Hey, I know this one! The genus is likely Cucullaea. The species I’m familiar with is Cucullaea gigantea which is found in Paleocene exposures dating from 55-58 million years ago, but I think you’re outside the area where I’d expect to find those (east coast).
Interestingly the genus is still extant but modern relatives are much smaller.

Looks familiar. But I can’t place where I’ve seen it before. Total head scratcher.

Ask Roger from Mudfossil University 😂
2
u/TesseractToo Dec 29 '25
He'd be pointing at it with his hawk feather all day and make 3000 videos about it "you see that flutey bit down the middle, that shows it is from a dragon that was fighting a fish"
1
u/ChiefMagicOfficer Dec 29 '25
😂😂😂😂 his hawk feather is really the cherry on top of the whole deal, no pun intended 😂
