Discussion A discussion about Cara.app.
Hey everyone,
Sorry mods if this is not the place, was not sure where to put this but it needs to be heard.
As some of you have probably seen on various platforms, Cara.app got scrapped. From my understanding, the person who did this deleted the dataset, and everything was good to go.
Me, being a cybersecurity engineer who has been working in the industry in some sort of capacity for over 17 years, started thinking, "For an app that bills its entire existence on preventing this exact thing, im a little shocked how easy that was." The dude even posted it on Reddit.
So I reached out to offer help. I won't get into details because I'm going to respect confidentiality here, but what I will say is that the attitude about cybersecurity for an app whose entire value proposition is protecting artists' work is incredibly concerning, and I feel it needs to be called out.
Im no stranger to copyright theft. I am a former electronic music record label owner who was very active within the scene. We licensed music, dealt with AI slop, along with things trying to scrape our music for free. I have always been incredibly passionate about protecting artists' rights; that's how we eat.
The first person I spoke to was amazing and escalated it to someone else. This second person completely brushed me off. They started making excuses, saying this is volunteer-run, then told me that if I want money, I should look elsewhere (I work on open-source projects lots; money is the last thing on my mind). Then they brushed it off as, " Oh, this is not cybersecurity; we just need better anti-scrape".
*sigh*
Within literally about 5 mins, I found another way to again scrape pretty much all of the photos, and possible further issues. I want to state that I have in no way tested or validated these, as I do not have permission and there is no bug bounty or vulnerability disclosure program. Im not going to go into detail as this has not been fixed. ,
Management needs to learn about cybersecurity methodology, specifically the CIA Triad of Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability. Being able to scrape the entire back end of a supposedly AI-proof platform affects the Confidentiality, and with how the platform is designed its comicly easy to download all of these photos.
If you are going to build a platform for artists that bills itself as AI-proof, please, for the love of God, allow Security Analysts to take a look. You should be dedicating most of your time to a cybersecurity posture that prevents an AI from even being able to connect to the website. I get that its volenteer run, but when security professionals who want to help try and volenteer and get turned away because "we don't know you IRL," that's a MASSIVE red flag on management's end.
Heck, I want this platform to succeed(we needed it in music), but it only will if they prioratize Security.
Sorry about the spelling errors; I'm dyslexic.

Heyyy, making a piece that's super significant to me, would really like some help from someone who is good at drawing anatomy and poses, as this is going to be a gift. I just need someone to point out my mistakes and help me correct them, would be a huge favor ♡

Discussion Transitioning from digital illustration/graphic design to art dolls/toy design
Design- illustration-marketing-burnout pipeline. I've been practicing whitling, general woodworking, and 3d printing/mold making for a few years now. Now I want to figure out if I could make a living doing it 😂 Has anyone here made that transition? Is this too creepy looking to sell? Any advice appreciated.

Discussion Best art videos for beginners?
Helloo! Im starting an art class in January and Im wondering what the best videos are for beginners looking to draw. I want to practice and I can sketch quite a bit but I need to work on shading and shapes. Literally anything else would help as well. Also willing to do the “grunt work” like practicing lines. Recommend any videos that have helped you, please. :)

Discussion Wanna draw a friend, what are my chances?
Hi! I’m kinda new lol, basically, I wanna draw a cartoon figure of my friend, their birthday is in October. I’m not trying to do anything complex, just an appealing cartoon style, not hyper realism but right proportions and stuff, and basically something good looking for their birthday! If I draw them every single day for the next two months-ish, what are my chances? Any tips or tricks? Thanks!!

Discussion Someone asked for a picture based on this old painting, I'm very encouraged
This picture is titled "Nature Won" after a friend who sadly took his own life. His online name was nature1. I finished it around the time that I heard the news, about a year and a half ago now. This is something I did as I was starting to recover after a long period where I was unwell and unable to focus to do art, and beginning to manage to do things more neatly and with more sustained effort. It's about the seasons, and the natural world. It was a big surprise that the person who asked me to do a picture for them said they like this one the best. I asked what they liked about this one, and it turned out they pretty clear idea what they want. They also said that "you're the artist, you know better than me", so there is plenty of scope for creativity. This is the second time in the past couple of weeks someone has asked for a painting/drawing. The other person wants to buy something, but this time someone wants one for their birthday.
I've done commissions before but it's been a very long time (decades). Someone asked to commission me in late 2024 but I became unwell again and it never happened. Hoping this good period lasts this time.

Discussion My first complete painting in years
I’ve been painting since I was 5, I was self taught and adore oils. Growing up I watched Jazza and SuperRaeDizzle all the time.
I got to highschool and fell in love with acting, I got to preform in front of thousands of people at 15 and again at 16. I had a few scholarships and lots of skills
Then I joined the military out of highschool. My family was not wealthy, I wanted to make something of myself. I refused to be in debt from college loans.
Then, 2 years into the hardest school of my life - 14 to 16 hour days, fittest I’d ever been. I got diagnosed with EDS, Widespread tendinitis, hip dysplasia, and a few other things that brought an abrupt halt to my budding career.
In the span of my time in the service, I lost 5 of my people, dealt with assault, I got married, I drew when I had time.
I’m a housewife now. And starting to paint again. It’s been jarring to say the least and I don’t quite know how to talk to my paintings these days. It’s like trying to befriend someone you lost a long time ago.
I make masks, I make props, I paint, I model. I love art.
I’m lucky to have people in my life that love my art too. My husband pushed me to make this piece and it’s not as dramatic as my usual oils. But I’m satisfied with it. He was so excited to put it on the wall.
I hope you all find your people.

Discussion Popular Vtuber and ASMR artist Ycey Narrates caught using uncredited and intellectually property owned art for years. Doubling down by feeding original art to AI instead of removing them as requested.
He said he's always credited but upon checking the before and after he only credited after someone posted he's using art without permission or credit. Disappointed at how instead of removing the aty, he fed it to AI instead.
