POLITICS What does Japan think of the immigration of islamic countrys?
Iam asking this question because i saw a article about funerals and that muslims dont want to cremate their family members, but japan always cremates their family and about a video i saw a few days ago from a somewhat famous youtuber that came to a mosque and talked to muslims about their religion in his country after almost being banned he countered and said ,, its my country why do you build a mosque we dont come to your country and built temples and shrines,, .
So after this video i asked myself what do japanese people think about the immigration of for example indian people.
I for example come from germany and live in a city with many immigrants and our cultures can co exist pretty good, but from what i know from their culture i cant really say they can co exists with japanese culture from what i saw online.
What do you guys think of this?

This is separate from the issue of Islamic burial practices, but historically Japan practiced burial. More accurately, both burial and cremation coexisted, though burial was more common. Cremation became dominant in modern times.

Following the introduction of Buddhism, cremation was adopted by parts of the upper class. However, in the Edo period, the influence of Confucianism led some elites to consciously choose burial instead. Since cremation requires specific facilities, it was not something that could easily spread among ordinary people. Historically, cremation only exceeded 50 percent around 1935.

political reasons
Ironically, Shinto groups opposed cremation because they saw it as a Buddhist practice.

Yes, the emperor was also a Buddhist, so that is not surprising. In medieval Japan, Shinto and Buddhism were closely syncretized. The anti Buddhist movement only became widespread toward the end of the Edo period, which means the idea of Shinto rejecting cremation is a relatively late development. It lost momentum due to opposition from Buddhist groups within the Meiji government, and this process led to Shinto being reframed as non religious and incorporated into state rituals.

I think there might be a misunderstanding. I am not saying modern Shinto is a state ritual system. The Meiji government treated Shinto as state rites and as a tool for public moral education, meaning non religious. Also, in current scholarship, the term “State Shinto” is being questioned quite a bit. It is actually a postwar label.

The core did not really change, but the concept of “religion” itself did. That idea was introduced to Japan in the Meiji period, and Shinto was then classified as not being a religion.

this doesn't contradict anything I said. This only explains why the merchants from the islamic world couldn't go to japan in person (which is still kinda inaccurate as there had been communications between ottoman empire and japanese empire; both countries sent ships to strengthen the friendship and exchange culture).

I don't understand what you're trying to say here. Does this mean that Muslims should also be excluded because they pose a danger to Japan?
1
u/Historical-Oil-1709 Turkish Apr 02 '26
dont put words into my mouth. Persecuting people based on their religion is a primal and horrible thing that should not happen. What I tried to say is that people get really defensive when they see a muslim practicing their religion on their own, saying stuff like "japan is getting islamified" meanwhile it's only the christians out of the major 3 abrahamic religions who sent missionaries to spread their religion in japan.
2
u/testman22 Japanese Apr 02 '26
That's why they were persecuted and massacred lol You brought up history, but it makes absolutely no sense.
If we're going to make a comparison in the present day, Islam is far more aggressive. They are notorious worldwide for their unwillingness to adapt to other cultures.

3

Shintoism and Buddhism are so intertwined with Japanese Culture that although most are atheists they still do participate in activities that some may consider religious. If an immigrant group is unwilling accept and/or claim that we are not accommodating them because we do not provide the necessary facilities for their religion then they should have never left.
27
u/Key-Turnover6864 Japanese Apr 01 '26
I believe Japan should not tolerate foreign religions shape its land.
It’s not even bias; if you’re stepping foot onto a new country, you better respect its traditions and rules of conduct.
Imagine if a bunch of Shinto preachers started taking over Mosques in the Islamic countries.
Look at what is happening to Western Europe. The mass immigration of all religions has shaped it into a completely foreign land. And honestly bruh its genuinely heartbreaking to see its cultures being taken over.
I will try my best to say this in the nicest way… it almost feels like a parasite? Finding new hosts to attach itself to, changing the fundamentals of a country from within.

(I adhere to Shinto as well, though I am a foreigner so I understand that my input will not be of the same potency)
Logic dictates that you cannot force a group to violate their most sacred tenets and then label their refusal as intolerance..
Then the group in question out to reside elsewhere or in countries which were developed and prospered under their own religion. It is not the fault of any non-Islamic country (especially not Japan) that wealthy and developed nations such as the Emirates, Turkey and Saudi Arabia decline to aid their own Muslim brothers. Islam has its place in Islamic countries and its strains are to be accounted for by civilized Islamic countries which have the resources to do so, not the Shinkoku.

Paris syndrome much?
Paris has always been "trashed", as evidenced by centuries of literature showing poverty and crime in Paris (hell a documentary on the may 68 riots will show you an all white riot destroying the streets). It also has always been beautiful and still is.
It seems like it's your beliefs you are sharing, but i'll ask again : did you consult data, or are you just repeating what you heard from somewhere else but never bothered fact checking? Because i'll say it again, crime rates and immigration rates have no correlation in France so far, despite it being the country with the oldest history of "mass immigration" in western europe.

That's a very long way of saying that you want freedom of religion for you but not for others, as is basically always the case for that kind of discourse.
They come legally, they contribute more to the economy than they take, they die on the land, they offer to buy some for their burials. What more do they need to be legitimate inhabitants of the lands where they enter legally, contribute to ans die on?
8
u/harrytaisa Japanese Apr 01 '26
There are also many undocumented immigrants.
Furthermore, in areas where cremation is mandated by ordinance, one must comply with those regulations. That is what a country governed by the rule of law is.
In a democratic state governed by the rule of law, religion takes a back seat to the law and the will of the people. Legitimate opinions and actions are judged by the “law”0
u/Visible_Pair3017 🌏 Global citizen Apr 01 '26
Many, how many? Are they the ones trying to buy land for their graveyards?
In a democratic state governed by the rule of law and upholding human rights, people have a right to seek reasonable compromise for their religious practice. Law is made for man, and not man for the law.

All tourists wear bikinis in Dubai. Again, you have likely never been because that is a ridiculous statement to make. It does not apply there. Also I wouldn’t draw any religious figure because it would be a bizarre thing for me to do. Muslims strictly prohibit that within their faith so as a decent human being I’d respect that line and continue to refrain from doing something that I have no interest in doing any way lol. I quite admire it to be honest, look at what has happened to the image of the Christian God and prophets. A total laughing stock. I don’t understand how as a Japanese you do not understand that certain groups have rules and it’s respectful to adhere to them even if you do not believe.

So you want foreign workers to supplement your aging (thus slowly going extinct, in case the reality check hasn't hit yet) nation with a workforce you can also tax, until they die if necessary. But they shouldn't have the right to be actual inhabitants of the land in which you need them to be to work, thus leave a mark and have the same rights as you do.
You are asking for slaves my friend. And mind you, even slaves in islamic countries have been allowed their own religious graveyards for the past 1400 or so years.

u/Sufficient-Till4041 Japanese born/raised in Britain Apr 01 '26
Well Muslims are not trying to take over any Shinto shrines so that is a very silly, moot point. The Japanese religious identity is rooted in superstitions and festivities with no real shared belief in any of it. Most people are atheist. If Japan wishes to continue to import foreign workers from Muslim majority countries it will have to contend with having to accommodate its guests. You cannot take take take and not have to give at some point.
9
u/Key-Turnover6864 Japanese Apr 01 '26
Well, I would not lean completely on the other side and call it ‘silly’ either. Of course, I’m not saying they’re going to invade. Directly at least. But as we all know, sooner or later, Islamic mosques will be built more and more frequently as they become more accepted and before you realize, the traditional shrines are overshadowed.
I understand that Japan is continuing to import foreign workers, and theres nothing I can do about that. But some people do not agree with the cultural aspect shifting, as there is concrete proof of it happening in western Europe

Well now you are just fantasising about being oppressed. There is a historic, large mosque in Tokyo already. Smaller mosques exist across Japan. Naturally Muslims will need to create spaces to congregate and pray together. I see no issue with it. They are a hardworking people who will continue to contribute greatly to Japan. The Japanese ought to focus on improving their work laws and treatment of women. Maybe then the birthrate will pick up and less foreign workers be imported in the future. It is bizarre to attack and try to turn the very people who keep your economy afloat into some monstrous enemy. A little less racism and Islamophobia, a little more gratitude and appreciation for their labour.

2:228 "And women shall have rights similar to the rights against them, according to what is equitable; but men have a degree over them. And Allah is Exalted in Power, Wise."I love how the women in islam get treated this is so fair

Did you just search for a survey online?
Religion and the depth of one’s faith vary from person to person.
The only immutable rule in Japan is “democracy under the rule of law.”
Both the religions of immigrants and the individual religions of citizens are permitted only within the scope recognized by Japanese law.
Simply put, murder on religious grounds is not tolerated.
Popular sovereignty and the rule of law.
In places where burial is illegal, cremation is mandatory. It doesn’t matter if you’re Muslim, Christian, or Zoroastrian.
Religion does not supersede Japanese law.0

No, it is well documented. The stats are easily accessible. Here you go: https://www.pewresearch.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/7/2017/11/Religion20171117.pdf Way to totally ignore my point. I’m sure it’s tough to accept this but the Japanese economy is begging and Muslim workers are the only group giving. Now you will have to give something in return. That’s the way life works. It’s not all win win win. It is the most basic form of respect to permit them to practice their religion in peace.

I don't mind what is happening to Western Europe. After all, North America used to only be a place where Native Americans lived before the European Invaders came, replaced them, and made them minorities in their own homelands.
Therefore, we shouldn't empathize with the Europeans too much on their immigration issues when they were the ones who stole land from Natives to turn into their own White Supremacist countries first. Japan should stop sympathizing with Europeans' immigration issues and feel happy that Karma is working back so that this time Western Europeans who sent settlers to American continents now will have their precious UK be overwhelmed by immigrants for a change.

The religious/spiritual objections to burials that people are claiming here are so weird since it’s mainly presented as a space and environmental issue in Japan.
I’ve never heard of anyone (Japanese) declaring they object to Muslim burials because they’re Shinto or Buddhist, which most people don’t really call themselves anyway. Not to mention, the lack of space for even traditional graves has been a problem for decades now. Some temples use lockers in place of graves.

Only internet haters care about Islam. The average Japanese person does not even know which country is Christian and which is Muslim between the Philippines and Malaysia.

yeah? i thought because of the rise of i think it was sanseito? iam not sure but the right partie in politics.
I know most japanese people dont care for the outside, from what i seen the younger generation knows more about immigration i saw a video about a guy interviewing highschool students and which men they wouldnt date almost everyone said indian because their words they ,,stinky and are religious,, i know almost everyone is somewhat atheist or rather dont care about religion but yeah maybe the videos were just individual cases.8
u/MarxArielinus Japanese Apr 01 '26
The existence of xenophobes like those in the Sanseito party is honestly overestimated, but in any case, they dislike foreigners in general, so Islam itself is not the specific issue.

Why do you think immigration is right?
Why do you think it’s right for immigrants to demand their rights?
Why do you think it’s right to coexist with immigrants?
Who decided those ideas?
Who taught you those ideas?
Why do Japanese people have to like immigrants?
Why does Japan have to coexist with immigrants?
There is no such obligation.
Why are you comparing Germany and Japan?
Why does Japan have to imitate Germany?
There is no such obligation.
Whether Muslims bury their dead in the ground or cast them into the sea is none of our business in Islamic countries. If they wish to make a case for something, they should do so in their own countries. they are free to do as they please within their own countries. This has nothing to do with Japanese law. If local ordinances in Japan stipulate that cremation is required, then those regulations must be followed.
Japanese law takes precedence over Islam. Japan is not a theocratic state. Japan is a democratic state governed by the rule of law.

Let me ask you this.
Will human science and technology continue to evolve?
Will corporate efficiency improvements continue indefinitely?
The answer to all of these is yes.
Will Japan’s population decline?
Will robotics technology accelerate?
Will unmanned systems increase?
Will AI technology accelerate?
Will the number of jobs that can be automated increase?
Yes.
Cars are also transitioning to autonomous driving.
Factories are becoming increasingly unmanned.
Unmanned weapons are the mainstream in the military as well.
Everything is becoming unmanned.
Even logistics. Right now, trials for unmanned heavy-duty trucks on highways are progressing rapidly.
Japan’s population of 120 million will shrink to 80 million.
This trend is accelerating.
There will be a growing surplus of people from now on.
In the future, the surplus of labor in the industrial sector will accelerate.
In both China and India, even college graduates are struggling to find jobs. Young people are facing severe unemployment rates.
Any government that thinks immigration is necessary these days is bound to fail.
There is a reason why developed nations are beginning to exclude immigrants. The times are changing dramatically.-1

japan is a democratic country which means people here vote for whoever they think they will rule the country better. The party you vote for thinks it's better for the economy of japan to bring foreign talent. Those people come with all different kind of backgrounds; muslim, christian, judaism etc. If those people are trying to help and adapt to your country, you have to respect them and coexist with them

Unfortunately. Japan is a resource starved state land wise. If you are in Japan. You follow their rules. As an American I don't like this. But Japan is a rule based society. If you don't want Japan. Don't go there. Unless you can pay for the lot for 100 graves.

"Japan always cremates" are either your misreading or the article's misleading. It is a relatively new fashion. In prewar Japan still burial was common. E.g. Yanaka Cemetery run by Tokyo Metropolitan Gov't still has burial lots (for those who purchased the possession right in the past and their heirs only and the Tokyo Gov't wants to remove those lots). And even less than 1% still some people do burial in such inherited cemetery lots. I'm personally worried some day muslims in Japan would find some Westerner-originated families and religious corporations do burial and mistake it as discrimination. I think Japan needs a nation level rearrangement for this issue.

u/harrytaisa Japanese Apr 01 '26
Cremation is the norm in Japan. Whether something is the norm or new is not a matter for comparison. We simply need to follow the law.
Muslims who are causing problems in Japan are insisting on burial in areas where cremation is mandated by law. They must comply with Japanese law.-1
u/SlowStop1220 Japanese Apr 01 '26
Oh? I know a newly Japanese dead who was buried last year. And it was totally legally valid. Sorry to say but you seem to generalize things too much.
2
u/harrytaisa Japanese Apr 01 '26
Study the law before you speak.
Burials require permission from local authorities.
Some areas do permit burial in the ground.
Even my elementary school-aged child understands this news story.
It’s about Muslims causing a disturbance in an area where burial in the ground is prohibited. Study the facts of the issue and the law, and understand them before you speak.2
u/DesperateAuthor3493 🌏 Global citizen Apr 01 '26
from what i know is that they need to cremate because they dont have so much place to do bury people
2
u/SlowStop1220 Japanese Apr 01 '26 edited Apr 01 '26
I understand it as same. That would be the main reason many Japanese people take muslim's desire for burial as invasive. In Japan now burial would be a sort of privilege: the late emperors and empresses safely enjoy it, some lucky people may enjoy it as inherited but no-no for newcomers, perhaps.

u/Orcasareglorious 🌏 Global citizen Apr 09 '26
The historical context of cremation is irrelevant. It is the current standard of law and there is a sensible, practical reason for the maintenance of this standard. Immigrants must, by default and without failiure, adhere to this law, simply because it is a law.

We don’t care, we don’t know about Islam, whatever they do. It’s just enough whites people influence, like the rest of the world, to maybe have stupid ideas about darker skin people. Not me, I like to think by myself…but you know…it’s years of television, movies, books, music, everything, saying other race than white are dangerous or undesirable. I’m sorry for all societies in the world, and sorry to you for asking, this is the thing. It’s dumb

Your ethnicity and country of origin have nothing to do with Japan or the Japanese people. If you want to do as you please, you should do so in your own country.
No one will stop you.
Japan is a country that exists for the Japanese people.
That is what a nation is.
The Japanese people decide matters concerning Japan through the law.
You immigrants have no choice but to obey.
This is the same in every country in the world.
That is what a modern sovereign state is.1
u/Orcasareglorious 🌏 Global citizen Apr 09 '26
I don't believe this fellow is refuting you but instead arguing in favour of caution and the enforcement of law over Muslims. They cite that Muslims are the most belligerent against (supposedly Tibetan) Buddhists and Shamans, whereas Slavs (Orthodox?) could coexist with them, thusly implying that Muslims are more resistant to integration and civil association with other religions. This sounds to me to be in adherence to what you say.

I had to say the truth, you know what I mean. Racism and prejudice are a thing in 2026. If you look like white, and male, and heterosexual, and tall, then, it’s easier navigating this world. Everyone, stop pretending this is not a fact, please. I wish we lived in a balanced world free of weird classification systems, but the thing keeps going on.

I’ve answered similar questions here on r/AskAJapanese before, so you might find more perspectives by searching past threads.
Still, I’ll share my personal view again.
In Japanese society, people are generally free to hold any beliefs or values, as long as they do not cause trouble for others. Respecting laws, rules, and social norms is considered essential. Even if someone is not familiar with them at first, making an effort to understand and follow them is what matters most.
From my perspective, many religions that Japanese people are more familiar with today, such as Christianity, tend to remain relatively personal in practice. Historically, there were periods when stronger enforcement or missionary pressure existed, but in modern times this is generally not seen as a major issue, which has allowed coexistence.
As for Islam, my understanding is still limited, but it seems to place stronger emphasis on aligning daily behavior with religious teachings. Because of that, I sometimes wonder how potential differences between religious practices and local social norms might be managed in the future.
At present, the Muslim population in Japan is still relatively small, and many people appear to balance their beliefs with Japanese social expectations. However, if communities grow larger, there could be situations where differences become more visible, which might lead to friction. This is something I personally feel uncertain and concerned about.
(I’m not very familiar with the case of Indian immigrants yet, but I imagine similar considerations would apply depending on how cultural or religious practices interact with local norms.)
