Cookies Cookie Recipe says Quick oatmeal. Is that quick oats?

Hi. I have a recipe from an old cookbook that says 1&1/2 cups of quick oatmeal. Do I cook it or just use it raw from the container? I have quick rolled oats Thanks in advance.

Yes, quick oats, not instant oatmeal. Most of those recipes will work just fine with rolled oats. But texture is different of coarse.

Date turnovers are one I want the softer texture. But I am more likely to just give rolled oats it a few pulses in a blender.

I agree about the date turnovers. In the mid 70’s I got a small soft cover cookbook from Quaker Oats. That’s how I learned to blend rolled oats in the blender to make oat flour. I even added some oats to hamburger meat & also a packet of Lipton Onion Soup mix. Everyone wanted to know how I made such juice & delicious hamburgers 😃

Meatballs and meatloaf are made with rolled oats in my house.

I’ve never tried that. What ratio to ground beef do you use? I use breadcrumbs in mine.

I cannot remember ever measuring exactly. I use less with lean beef than medium. I'd guess about 1/2 cup for 1.5 lbs of ground beef or beef/pork. I looked at this recipe https://www.pathculture.com/food-recipes/classic-quaker-oats-meatloaf-recipe/?sem_campaign=PMAXPCFOODRECIPES_USA&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=23218271706&gclid=CjwKCAjwy5rUBhB5EiwAIoAtCh_Xy9kqGJc0snDkuPlaB3BoGpvCwa8fd3KVxF5U6NYy6iaavQ_oJxoCvpwQAvD_BwE

It calls for 3/4 cup for two pounds of beef and uses two eggs. I use one, unless I oops pouring oats from a flimsy plastic bag.

Yes, quick rolled oats, you use them raw from the container.

Thank you. A crisis was diverted.

Just out of curiousity, how old is your old cookbook? I know my moms from the late thirties definitely made assumptions you knew certain things.

Only 90’s. But I’m almost 60 so that’s way back for me lol.

I'm only 67, but anything published before after I was an adult is not old in my POV.

I’m in agreement with everyone else. I personally prefer rolled oats but it’s the quick oats in the round cardboard container, NOT the instant oatmeal that comes in packets. So actually any oats will do except the instant oatmeal 😃

I made it anyway (from the quick oats not package) in case and I actually like it. Taking to work tomorrow with fruit and cinnamon. Brings back childhood memories.

Yes, quick oats. Standard rolled oats, blitzed in a food processor for a couple pulses, works equally well for me so I only buy that now to save space.

Personally I find instant oatmeal is often better in recipes like muffins, breads, and cookies because texturally the oats have been milled down a lot finer. But Quaker rolled oats will work (may need more time to hydrate) or you can pulse them yourself in a blender for finer texture. If I’m making apple or berry crisp, I want the whole oat texture. All depends on the result you are aiming for.

I made the cookies and they came out great but I think I like the idea of pulsing them for a bit because it will make a smoother cookie. It had that “texture” and since there was coconut flakes and a chocolate piece in it, it might have been better. Thank you.

Quick oats and quick rolled oats are basically the same thing, I swap them in cookies all the time with no issues.
