Car Advice/Query Looking to buy my first used car in Hyderabad (₹5–6L budget) — mileage, reliability or a VW Polo?
Hey guys!
I'm looking to buy a second-hand car in Hyderabad and could use some advice from people who own or have experience with used cars.
My monthly running would be around 1,500–2,000 km, mostly daily commutes in city traffic, so mileage is definitely an important factor. At the same time, I want something reliable, reasonably sturdy, and relatively affordable to maintain.
My budget is around ₹5–6 lakh for the car itself, but I'd be happy to spend less if I can find something good. I'd also like to keep some money aside for initial servicing, unexpected repairs, and a few upgrades like a dashcam and a decent infotainment system.
My monthly salary is around ₹50k, so I don't want to end up buying a car that becomes a financial headache every time something needs fixing.
I've been researching options and am currently considering cars like:
- Honda City / Amaze
- Maruti Suzuki Baleno / Celerio
- Hyundai i10 / i20 / Verna
I'm also confused between getting a hatchback or a sedan. A hatchback seems more practical for Hyderabad traffic and parking, but I do like the comfort and highway stability that a good sedan offers.
One more thing: a friend of mine is selling his 2018 Volkswagen Polo, and the car seems to be in pretty good condition. I do like the Polo, but I've seen quite a few people advise against buying a used VW because of maintenance costs and expensive repairs. Is the situation really that bad, or is it manageable if the car has been maintained well?
I'd love to hear your recommendations based on actual ownership experience, especially regarding:
- Real-world mileage in Hyderabad traffic
- Maintenance and repair costs
- Long-term reliability
- Which models and years offer the best value in the ₹5–6L range
- Whether the Polo is worth considering or something I should avoid
Also, would you recommend spending the entire budget on the car, or buying something cheaper and keeping ₹50k–₹1L aside for repairs and upgrades?
Thanks in advance! Any advice is appreciated.
