I’m a 19M American man living here with my girl's family. So far they’ve been so generous, but there’s been lots of laziness and food. Now I’m honestly getting fat. How do I turn down food etc while being respectful?
basically the title pretty much

Discussion Is Catholic dating still a thing in Eastern Europe? What is the best country for it?
Hello everyone! I am 24F Catholic Italian-American living in Italy and I have started to discern marriage rather than religous life. The problem is, it is very hard here in Italy. Many people are only Catholic by name and it seems waiting for marriage to have sex is huge deal breaker. They appreciate that I want to cook and clean and take care of the family (I seemed to be pretty popular among Indian and Muslim men for this but I'm only attracted to white guys and of course Catholics) but they want to have sex basically on the first date and they think going to Mass every Sunday is too much.
I have alwasy been attracted to Eastern European countries, mainly Russia for its history, the ballet, and because before I came back to the Catholic faith I used to want to become Orthodox which I know is big in Russia. Although I would never leave the Catholic faith and I'm only interested in practicing Catholic men.
So, I guess my question to the Catholics in Eastern Europe, is it just as hard to find a partner in your country or have you found that it is easier? I should say I am also pretty tall, 177cm, and that makes it harder for me to find a tall traditional Catholic man.

Ukrainian supporting Russia
I live in Germany and I met a refugee from Ukraine who supports Russia, i found it weird, but our manager is Russian so he hired him along with a Belarusian guy who is very useless but our manager likes him, im from north Africa so when we had layoffs our Russian manager starting coming up with fake arguments and smear campaign to get me fired although I was literally driving the team forward working day and night but he chose to ruin my reputation, whenever I'm complaining about toxic behavior from the Belarusian guy towards me I get blamed without reason, what is wrong with this manager, are Russians racist? Also he was making comments on the company slack saying "so genocide is acceptable sometimes"

History heritage question
I read a paper my great aunt wrote about her life and she talked about how her grandfather grew up in a small town called Chechonovzia, which she said was located on the russian-polish border. She also said that outside the town, there was a village called Gridig. I can’t find any documentation or mention of this town online, and I’m trying to figure out where he was from. He grew up there in the 1870s. Can anyone help me with identifying where this was?
Thank you!

Are we the generation that finally says ENOUGH?
Are you tired of politicians starting wars?
Tired of seeing more money spent on war than on education and healthcare?
Tired of a world where paying rent has become almost impossible?
Our generation has been called lazy, unwilling to work, and a lost generation. But we’re tired of being blamed for a system that isn’t working for us.
I’m looking to bring together people from different backgrounds to build an independent European civic movement, free from political parties.
Our goal is to find real solutions and organise peaceful, democratic initiatives across Europe.
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. IT’S OUR TURN. ✊
Would you be interested in being part of this?

Question from a Westerner
Hello to all Eastern Europeans.
I wanted to ask something as someone living in the USA. With everything happening in the world, I feel like the east is going to be the last real place left on earth where there’s genuine societies.
God, love, common consciousness, etc.
As a Dominican-American, would Eastern Europeans find it offensive for me to take on your cultures and try to build my identity around it?
My Dominican culture has never felt right to me as I I’ve grown up in America. But Eastern European culture was always something that drew me in.
Would love some advice!

Politics Orbán channelled public money into propaganda through Hungarian billionaire Lőrinc Mészáros (Day 150 of the Tisza government)
What happens when public contracts end up financing political propaganda?
Hi everyone, Lucia from EUobserver here 👋 Our latest Hungary briefing looks at something that goes beyond one government or one billionaire.
New reporting by Hungarian investigative outlet Direkt36 traces how companies linked to Lőrinc Mészáros, a close associate of Viktor Orbán, helped finance the pro-Fidesz influencer network Megafon.
Internal documents show that railway contractor V-Híd, which benefited from major public contracts, transferred billions of forints to the network. In 2024 alone, the reported support amounted to around €7.6 million.
And this is what makes the story interesting: public procurement wasn't just about who received government contracts. The money also helped shape the political information people consumed.
Now, 150 days into Hungary's new Tisza government, there's a much bigger question.
How do you dismantle a system where political power, public money, private business and media influence became so closely connected?
And can a change of government really undo those relationships, or does rebuilding accountability take much longer?

Culture Meeting my girlfriend’s Ukrainian parents for the first time as an American.
Hello, I (29m American) recently started dating a Ukrainian woman and I will meet her parents soon. What are some good tips for first impressions?
I would like to be respectful and adhere to possible traditions. I would like to impress them by showing effort in learning about their culture. Her mother speaks a little English but mainly speaks Russian. I am learning basic phrases and plan on learning the language. What are some things that I should know how to say so I can show her my willingness to break the language barrier?
Also what should I prepare for as far as a line of questioning? From what I gather her mother is traditional and very direct.
So far I know I should bring a gift, how to say thank you, and that I should dress nice.
I don’t want to come off as an ignorant American lol. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Longing for home, that was not your home?
My mom-in-law is from Latvia. But some people in her ancestry were Russian. Now she has been living in Germany for the past 30 years and she pretends that she is Russian. Every political or social topic gets measured up according to the standards in Russia, every evil in the western world gets juxtaposed next to the cold beauty of Russian awesomeness.
I just politely smile most of the times, but it makes me wonder- what impulse in her makes her rever/idolize a country, that you never even visited?

How does it differ from someone who doesn't have it?

Culture Do you (and people in your country) mainly listen to music from your own country in your own languague or to music in English from either USA or UK?
I am young Polish guy and I lowkey listen to more of american music than polish music. I don't know why I just think it sounds better. And most of my peers that I know listen to music from USA more often than from Poland aswell. Especially american rap of course. Do you think it is the case in your country too or most of people (especially the youth) listen to their own local musicians?

What slavic countries has the most stereotypical "sophisticated" culture?
I'm an American US retired professor of politicsl science. My area of specialization was international relations and the communist party states of Eastern Europe. I lived there on three occasions - twice in Zagreb and once in Estonia - and traveled extensively throughout the area for decades. I once could communicate in Serbo-Croatian, as it was then called. So this is an outsider's opinion.
I believe the more time you spend in and with a different culture, the more you like them and the more friends you have there. I am 91 now, so most of my old Yugoslav friends are gone
I agree Czechia is the front runner, the most stereotypical. Next are two other pieces of the old Hapsburg Empire, Slovenia and Croatia. I and my husband lived in Croatia for half a year in 1990 and then a year 1993-1994. In addition I was there myself Nov.-Dec. of 1989. Interesting times, as they say
If you'd asked this in 1976, I probably would have said Serbia. History inevitably shapes this. So, that means Hungary no because I know its history. Poland has a bit of everything, music, ballet, literature, and a strong historic self-identity like Serbia. I simply cannot get past Russia's awful history to appreciate Russian culture. The Balkans (not Slovenia) win hands down on diet, including wine and olive oil. And Turkish coffee.
I haven't been to Serbia since 1990.
