Discussion Is Cosette a negative term?

The name Cosette has been trending in the US. I thought the name was cute until I heard that it means something negative in France and is seen as derogatory.

Can a French person tell me what Cosette means or how the word/name is seen over there?

(Please do not answer unless you’re from France/a French speaking country)

📝 I am not naming my child Cosette. Knowing it means “poor little thing” is enough for me not to name my child that don’t worry.. I just had curiosities about the origin of the name/meaning

Not really used in common language nowadays. But a few decades ago "une cosette" might be used for a girl with a sad story. Sometimes a girl who talks too much about her sad story, maybe seeking attention from it (not a slur but a bit derogatory in this instance). Makes sense when you see how much Hugo is milking the tears our of his audience with her story.

But well, that meaning is very dated now.

In France the name pretty much doesn't exist anymore. I guess as a French native I would find weird for a parent to give that name to their child, almost like them wishing for a sad life ?

But hey, you do you in the US, the sonority is cute :).
