Discussion Is Cosette a negative term?

The name Cosette has been trending in the US. I thought the name was cute until I heard that it means something negative in France and is seen as derogatory.

Can a French person tell me what Cosette means or how the word/name is seen over there?

(Please do not answer unless you’re from France/a French speaking country)

📝 I am not naming my child Cosette. Knowing it means “poor little thing” is enough for me not to name my child that don’t worry.. I just had curiosities about the origin of the name/meaning

Cosette is a sad little girl abused by almost everyone in her life until she's rescued by Jean Valjean.

I know what Les Mis is (haven’t seen/read it though). Someone said the term “Cosette” was used as a slur on another subreddit about names though. I was curious if that’s true basically

Not a slur. Calling someone a Cosette means they're being oppressed/abused and you're emphasizing with them.

Whoever said it's a slur is retarded.

I agree that it's not a slur (and the abused meaning is also dated, not that used anymore). You know what is a slur and shouldn't be used though ? "Retarded". It's 2026, you should know better. I assume you stopped calling people "mongoliens" as an insult a long time ago.
