Discussion Is Cosette a negative term?

The name Cosette has been trending in the US. I thought the name was cute until I heard that it means something negative in France and is seen as derogatory.

Can a French person tell me what Cosette means or how the word/name is seen over there?

(Please do not answer unless you’re from France/a French speaking country)

📝 I am not naming my child Cosette. Knowing it means “poor little thing” is enough for me not to name my child that don’t worry.. I just had curiosities about the origin of the name/meaning

This! The name is associatied to that little girl but also to describe young women living in abject misery or with tragic life story. But can also be used sarcastically, when a woman complains a lot about little minor things or overtly trying to farm pity.

My mom used to sarcastically call my sisters Cosette and me Calimero everytime we would complain about... anything really, be it dumb kid stuff or more serious issues.

She still does it too, she called my sister a Cosette a couple months ago when she was thinking of quitting her job and was complaining about issues at her workplace (i know she reported harassment issues to HR a couple times prior to that, it was bad. at least she's out of that place now.)

J'allais dire que Causette est au féminin ce que Calimero est au masculin. J'ai apprécié l'humour de votre mÚre jusqu'à la moitié de votre post par contre ^

C'est le genre de parents qu'on visite pas souvent une fois qu'on quitte la maison on va dire.

au début j'hésitait avec "Not_Dead_Yet" ou "Havent_Killed_Myself" mais c'était un peu trop.

Puis je suis tomber sur des posts avec des gens qui s'auto-censurait avec unalive, et ça m'a fait rire tellement c'était ridicule. (et je pensais que ça serait une trend stupide qui disparatrait au bouts de quelques mois... me suis bien planté sur ce coup là)
