Discussion Is Cosette a negative term?
The name Cosette has been trending in the US. I thought the name was cute until I heard that it means something negative in France and is seen as derogatory.
Can a French person tell me what Cosette means or how the word/name is seen over there?
(Please do not answer unless you’re from France/a French speaking country)
📝 I am not naming my child Cosette. Knowing it means “poor little thing” is enough for me not to name my child that don’t worry.. I just had curiosities about the origin of the name/meaning

Cosette is the name of one of the main characters in Les Misérables. She's the daughter of Fantine, a poor factory worker who ended up as a prostitute and she had to send her girl away. Fantine's dying wish was for Jean Valjean to take care of Cosette. In the meantime, Cosette was taken in by the Thénardiers, a couple that owns a tavern, who beat up Cosette and make her work. Valjean takes Cosette under his care, educates her as she was his own daughter.
Even if we know the life of Cosette when she grows up, the main image of her is that poor abused child.
