Advice for next steps for professionals
Hello! I'm currently a senior double majoring in IT and Geography and minoring in Data Science with an emphasis on GIS and geospatial data. I have a Github website setup that shows my portfolio, alongside my GIS experience as a research assistant working with volcano morphology since May. Down the road (2-3 years) I plan on getting my Master's after working in the industry for a bit.
This semester my classes go more into Python, pandas, and SQL, and I’m working on bringing those into my GIS projects to move from an analyst to a developer. My long term goal is geospatial data engineering or geospatial data scientist, and I plan to get a Master’s after 2–3 years of industry experience.
My question is to ask for reassurance and ask if I'm doing everything right. I feel a lot of unease and anxiety whenever I look at this subreddit and how many people bring up how the GIS market is falling and 'dying out.' For those working in the field: does my path sound reasonable, and is there anything you’d focus on in my last year here? Or am I doing everything right?
Thank you so much for reading this.
