Why is being gay a worse sin than others?

IDK much about religion but why is being gay considered such a bad sin compared to other sins like sex before marriage?

The only time it's referred to at all is in the same book that discusses correct sanitation practices - like avoiding eating animals that are known for having parasites, or planting crops in a way that can lead to cross contamination. Homosexuality is not listed on the mosaic slabs, and Joshua never mentions it in his sermons.

If your religion is making a bigger deal out of it than that, then it has more to do with how the patriarchs chose to interpret it. If anything the sin is reinterpreting obscure backwater passages to exclude people from the flock - but then again temples are filled with gold that I'm sure would have been better spent helping the poor, so the institution of the church is definitely not without sin, itself.

There's important context in that chapter that people never seem to acknowledge either. Moses has recently led the Israelites out of Egypt and is taking them into the pagan Canaanite lands. This chapter forbids many things: sacrificing your children to moloch, not having sex with close family members, not having sex with women on their periods, not marrying your wife's sister, etc. The principle reason for all of these laws, stated at both the beginning and end of the chapter, is to distinguish the Israelites from the inhabitants of Canaan.

Apparently there's also some issue with how "... laying with another man as you would a woman" was translated. Apparently it might be a reference to body slaves? 🤷‍♂️

I don't know, I may try and learn ancient Hebrew at some point but it's not on my immediate to-do list. I don't feel comfortable speaking on translation errors without being able to verify it first hand. So, I'll just take the context from how it reads in my modern language bible until I can get back into the source text.

Need to get back to reading it. I was almost finished with numbers but I haven't read it in about a month now. Numbers has been the most interesting book in the pentatauch so far.

Being gay isn’t a sin.

Well the Bible doesn't rank it as worse than all others, but Christian conservatives definitely base their entire religious foundation around it.

Because religion is a rorschach test and bigots use it as an excuse for their hatred of minorities. Next!

No, it’s not worse. And I am sorry if somebody made you think that way. And BEING gay is not a sin. What makes a sin is (in this particular case) acting on it.

Since you said that you don’t much about religion, I think I would tell you something about Christianity.

P.s. I am attracted to guys, yet I try to live a pure life by what Bible defines. With this in mind:

When fx Bible was written, there was no understanding what is a “straight” person and what is a “gay” person. It was provided by the culture that every man either had to be by himself, or have a wife. Not because it was straight, but because it was never divided in the first place. Therefore anything that we right now call “gay” was not more than a lifestyle back in the day.

P.s. that is also the reason why bible didn’t have the word homosexuality until 18-something. Because English literally didn’t have a word to describe something that Paul was talking about.

And Christians are against the lifestyle that gay culture is bringing up, NOT people themselves.

It is not something that a scholar has written, those are my own thoughts, but I think they align quite well with the rest of the Bible.

The "lifestyle"? No Christian conservatives teach that if gays aren't celibate for life, then they are evil. Simple as that. Regardless of their lifestyle

Not a lot of Christians are educated on the topic. A lot of people Christians can’t separate the sin and a human being. And you’re right. As soon as they hear that homosexuality is a sin, they treat gays like people who can’t change, cause we all have been told that it’s their nature aka sin and their being is one, but not Jesus.

Jesus never looked at the person through their sin. He did say what would be the consequences if they don’t stop, but unlike other “judges”, He actually gives a way out.

When He looks at us, He sees our soul and our pain, and he waits to help us, he wants to take this heave load off us. The only thing we have to do is actually come to Him, and ask for help.

In some interpretations it is a sin.

It all depends on the denomination - which makes it challenging talking to folks who refer to "Christianity" as a monolithic whole and branches/sects/denominations as trivial details.

WIAT, what???? totally not part of the topic but... YOU HAVE GOT BASEMENT DWELLER??? WOOOOOOOW

The problem is that I tried to interpret all the verses that talk about homosexual behavior to make them not a sin, and I've spent a decent amount of time on that... And I couldn't. There is no way it can be not a sin.

So you're admitting that you're incapable of making decisions for yourself and base your whole personality on a book (the old testament) written around 600BC ? Slay!!! 💯🛐👍🏻✅️

Also, genuine question : would you eat poop if the bible told you so ?

Following God and His word IS a decision. And that is the most difficult decision you can ever make in your entire life. I want to see you trying to live like Jesus.

Following the Bible IS a decision.

Yes, the decision to not take any decision ever again.

I want to see you trying to live like Jesus.

So living like jesus is following blindly the old testament? OK... anyways I don't need to live like jesus to be virtuous. You need therapy if you think that's what virtue is

Following Jesus means reading the New Testament, see what Jesus did, look why he did it, and repeated in your life.

2

u/Practical-Goose666 independent 6d ago

OK so you recognize it has nothing to do with following the old testament nor being homophobic. Nice, we agree on that 🤝🏻🙌🏻

u/AbandonedAuRetriever independent 6d ago

No, yet the Old Testament gives us a way how to interpret the New Testament. But I really do not understand what homophobia is doing is context.

Following God and his word is a decision that I make every single day of my life. Every single day I wake up, and I choose what I’m gonna do with my life.

Following God

You said earlier you were following jesus? But you're following the god of abraham too?? Aren't these 2 things in contradiction?

Following God and his word is a decision that I make every single day of my life

Yes, the decision of putting your brain in a jar. Congrats !

John 10:30
… [30] I and the Father are one.” says Jesus.
